Tlie natal day of Christ the Savior of mankind. What memories cluster near to tbs heart of the hardened worldling when he tlrst awakes to the dawn of this hallowed anniversary. What tender recollections surge up through the 'spirit embittered, mayhap, by a life oi loneliness and solitary selfishness In the dim vista of the past he sees, per haps, soft, sweet eyes that shine with i ■divine light that can be born only of a mother’s all-absorbing love and devo tion; be hears, and, alas, it may be in tones of grief at tbe waywardness of her child, a loving voice that can only come from a mother's all-forgiving lips. He sees as in a mirror the well-remembered face as it lighted up in glad particlpa tion la the recital of childish joys, and the sweet sympathy which smootiied jtwjy tbe little cares of boyhood. At this time as at no other can lie re call the lines of pain and sorrow that surely crept into that countenance us slowly it dawned on the mother's fond heart that her idol was of only common clay and that she must die aid see her bright hopes of his future unreilized and futile. At this' time as at no other lie who has lived the full measure of his dajs in the pandering to thojgrossor inclinations is filled with a loathing of himself as bitter as it is deserved. He wanders through the stroets alone and sollta'y among the bright faced throng whose eyes are alight witli the gladness of a loving gift to others, knowing that in this day of universal love he Ij a “man on the outalde,” and that his life is what he haa made it This is not such a selfish old world though, after all, and, thank Cod, in thie social, friendly land of ours, there are |few who this! evening will not have felt the hearty grip of friend- ablp and heard the cheery “Merry Christmas" given from the heart The Times-Recobder wishes for Its readers a Christmas of joy and love, to be followed by a year of peace and plenty, unraarred by more of pain or sorrow than must fall to tbe mortal lot. For a longtime this paper has advo cated the establishment of manufactur ing enterprises as a sure moans of pro- 1 grcssioD for this oity and aectlo'i, and the recent statistics setting forth the abandoned farm acreage of New Eng land aad its manufacturing interests when compared with the South is vastly ahead In wealth, and immeasurably be hind in natural advantages. The de velopment of that section of conn try Is purely arlificiul and is due solely to the push and enterprise of thoee citizens who realized tbe profit in ottering to Hie demands cf the world , at large. To-day there are in the north eastern states thousands of acres of abandoned farm lands, and yet the per capita wealth la greater than that of any othor section of the country So much for manufactories. Speaker Crisp In the appointment of Ids committees has received tbe almost united praise of the press and people. It It true that a few of tbe bitter parti san sheets have charged him with error In tome of hie selections, but to a fair minded reader tbli only goes to prove that he placed his men rightly, as tbe endorsement of the prejudiced and dis gruntled prase could only have, been brought about by tbe making of a mis take on tbe Speaker’s park The National Economist published at 'Washington, D, C. In tbe Interest of the Farmer’s Alliance glories In tbe election of Crisp over Mills as speaker, yet Its . perspicuity in this respect I* just a little dulled by the fact that it calls tbe nine deluded congressmen who voted for Tommy Watson “heroes.” However, this may a typographical error resulting to the Insertion of “heroes" instoad of UNKIND COMMENT. Americus has invited Springer and McMillin to the Crisp reception next Saturday, hut Mill's name dues nut so far appear in the list of guests Ameri cus, of course, knows her own business best, but she would have done a very graceful thing by asking the distin guished Texan to her b'ow out.—Jack sonville limes-Union. So far as the Tiues-Rkcouiikii knows, there has never yet appeared a “list of guests” Invited to the Crisp celebration which was to have been held In this city on the 30th, lost., and as to tbe grace embodied in an invitation extended to Mr. Mills, the Tlmes-Unfon teems to descend rather lower titan the friends of Mr. Crisp are willing to go. Mr. Mills in his campaign for the speakership did not hesitate to use methods looking toward his own success which Chas. F. Crisp would hava dis dained being guilty of, and in addition thereto ezldbited himself afterward in a very bad light by his childish fit of snlks and even discourtesy to the statesman who had beaten him in fair contest. Although the celebration in honor of Mr. Crisp is unfortunately postponed the Americus people, in spite of tbe opinion of tbe Times Union, see no spe cial reason why it would have proven more “graceful" to invite Mr. Mills than to ignore him.
