Nbw Yokk, Dec. 26.—Slavin, Corbett . ah<L Mitchell have had the pugilistic fifelifeall to themselves apparently for 'Is Mfefapaat few days, and Win Madden ^C&jhaFnad very little to say abont bis man Maher. When some one asked Billy Edwards who had become of the Irish Champion's walflger’since Corbett slid Mitchell were matched, the guardian of the Hoffman house art treasures replied jjith a significant wink: "You let Mad den alone. It's ten to one he’ll spring something pretty soon. * And Madden did "spring" something in the shape of an announcement that Peter Maher and Jaclr Dempsey would box four rounds at Madison Square Gar den January 14. The conditions of the affair are tliat there shall be no referee and no seconds. It is to be a scientific boxing exhibition, pure and simple, aud the net receipts will be equally divided between the hoxer*. The reports'of Dempsey’s ill-health have been exaggerated, according to his own statement. He said: "It is quite true that I was ill after my arri val from the Pacific coast, but I am all 1 right now and have been for two weeks. The reports that I have consumption are, according to the statements of a number of physicians, utterly without foundation. I am beginning to get used to this sort of thing, however. These examinations will be made by au examining board in the de partment designated by tbe secretary and not by the civil service commission, and, as a rule, each examination for a promotion to any grade will be confined to clerks on tbe next lower grade and in tbe same office or bureau. . A» part of tbe plan thds adopted, a daily report will be kept of the effi ciency of each dork by the chief of bis division, and in all examinations this efficiency report will be the element-of chief weight. The efficiency record will give the daily standing of each clerk for punctuality, attendance, con duct (including personal habits), accu racy, industry, aptitude and general This new departure, with which the officials of tbe treasury department are in full accord, it regarded as removing all promotions from the domain ol political influence anil official favor itism and^lacing them exclusively on , Wood! The laws of health are taagbt In the schools; but not In a way to ue of mnch practicable benefit, and are never Ulna- trated by living examples, which In many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold, was brought before tbe school, so that all could hear the dry, lond cough and know Its significance; see the thin white coating on the tongue, and later, aa the eold developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what tbe first symp toms of a cold were The scholar should then be given Chamberlaln’e Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that even a severe eold could be cared in one or two days, or at least greatly miti gated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. This remedy is famous for it’s cures of coughs, colds and croup.
