“I)r, Hill” is one of the funniest,
brightest comedies out this season. It
ranks with “The Hustler” and “The
Llazzler.” Don’t fail to s«*e the fun at
the opera house tonight.
Mr, Joseph Hritton is yard roaster at
the S , A. A M.road instead of the Cen

efficient work for the “old reliable.”
The many friends of Mr. J. II, Free

you see it.
Little business of general interest was
disposed of by the city fathers at the
regular meeting of council last night.
Farther action In regard to the street
railroad matter has been deferred for
the present.
'Iho county commissioners met
regular monthly session yesterday.
With the exception of passing upon the
several bonds of county oflicers present
ed, there was nothing done out of tho
regular routine of business.
Kvery citizen of Americus is deeply
interested In the movement to start tho
street cars again. Don’t you think they
would help Americus’.* Then help your
self, your town and your neighbor by
adding your name to the list of pur
chasers of tickets today.
Yesterday was by far one of the most
disagreeable days of the new year, and
was in strange contrast to the balmy
spring weather of last week. The day
throughout was cold, damp, raw and
dismal, and ouly those ventured upou
the streets who wero compelled to do so.
An important meeting of the general
passenger agents of the railroads in the
Southern Passenger Association is to he
held at St. Augustine, February 14th, It
is understood that the matter of chief
interest to come up is the tixiug of the
World’s Fair rates, which have been so
long looked for by the public.
The Savanuah and Western tunnel is
again blocked up. A la.go rock fell in
the tunnel Saturday while a force was at
work blasting, tearing up some of the
track and blocking it. Workmen are
now at work arching the tunnel and
completing the repairs made necessary
by the recent disastrous fire, hence the
blasting.

Mr, John Haynes, marshal of Lees
burg, and who is well known to many in
Americus met with rather a costly acci
dent on Sunday afternoon last.
He was driving a spirited horse to his
buggy, when the animal suddenly took
fright and ran away. Coming to a large
and deep ditch the frightened horse
plunged headlong into it, breaking his
neck and dying Instantly.
Just as the horse was about to make
the leap Mr. Haynes jumped from the
buggy and escaped with only a few
bruises. That he was not seriously hurt
is almost a miracle. The bug^y was
dashed to pieces and piled on top of tho
dead horse in the ditch.
