had working alliances with all the lead

The attendance was larger than at
any previous meeting of a press associa
tion ever held in this country.
It was tho unanimous opinion of those
assembled that the timo was ripo for a

zation, such as has never existed in this
conntrv, ami which should extend from
Atlantic to th« Padflc. embracing
in its mombenddp all of the leading daily
new»pa)iers, while preserving the au
tonomy of the various sectional assuda-

Mr. William Penn Mixon, president of
the Assodated Press, occupied the chair.
Mr. Victor F. Lawson, chairman of the

ing resolution, which was unanimously
adopted:

Nashville, Oct. 8.—Yonng Fleming,
alias John Williams, the negro who re
cently escaped from the Jackson Jail,

Washington, Oct. 6.—In the senate a
letter was received from Secretary Car
lisle, stilting that it would tako $7,300,-
000 to carry out£the Geary act in accord
ance with the treasury department.
Mr. Allen asked immediate considera
tion for tlie resolution calling
secretary of the treasury to state Whether
tho treasury had borrowed money since
1888, and if so, tlie reasons why. It
objected to by Mr. Voorhees and laid
over.
The senate took up Peffer’s resolution
providing for the apjiointment of a
lect committee of three senators to in
quire into tho tanking systems of the
country and ascertain what systems are
necessary to prevent panics.
Mr. McPherson moved its reference to
the finance committee and Mr. Stewart
proceeded to talk on it.
Mr. Blackburn sent to the clerk’s desk
and had read an amendment to the re
peal bill which he ha<l given notice of in
his speech Wwlneadoy.
It strikes out tho Voorhees amendment
to the house bill and sutatitntes for it
six additional soction*. It authorizes
the free coinage of silver from United
Htates mints, except as to seignorage,
tho rate of which is to be established ny
tho secretary of tlie treasury on the first
of each month.
Tlie seignorage is to be the difference
between the market price of ailver and
its minted value after coinage. The
seignorage is not to ta coined, but is to
be sold for gold, either at home or
abroad, and tbe gold received for it is to
be held in the treasury and used only for
the pur]M«e of maintaining the parity
between the two metals.
Mr. Peffer’s resolution was referred to
the finance committee .and Mr. Morgan'i
resolution,instructing tho judiciary com
mittee to inqniro what provisions of the
free coinage act of 1887 are still In force,
was agreed to without discussion and
without division.
The silver purchnso repeal bill was
then, at 12:80, taken up, and Mr. Call
continued hi* speech against it, which
ho begun Wfrinesday.

ing practice of suspending pensions pend

courts. Thomas 8. Hopkins, as attorney

Mr*. Thornton's husband was a lin

a bride, accompanied him. and when
last heard from loth were content,
though Mr. Thornton's letters were fall

Mayers, of the Eighth Judicial district,

Auoista. Oct. 8.—Mr. Thaddeua

is lying dangerously wounded at his
home near McBoan, in this county. He

boys summoned Thornton to his door.

when the teacher appeared he pulled the
trigger, sending a whaling iron entirely

Mrs. Thornton was to havo been
killed, .but tho boys were frightened
awar by her screams. Tho Thornton
residence was somewhat isolated and
her cries were not heard. Hhn passed
the night alone with the dead body of
her husband.
In the morning tho entire village
aroused. A party of Indians. apprecU-
tivo the efforts Thornton hml made in

not wait for a trim.
Then tho relatives mni friends of the
boy murderers organized to fight the
vigilance committee, lmt finding ttaut

tention and went to the Thornton cot
tage to kill Mrs. Thornton. They argued
that as two of their nnintar hail been
killed two of their enemies should die.
Tbe vigilance committee learned of the
threat and stopped them on the way.

day or two it was feared she would lose

of the marine hospital service, has ur-

riod. I am going to adopt the most
most stringent methods. I will visit
