Friday, everybody feeling perfectly aat-
iafied that the new Brazilian cruiser is in
perfect fighting trim.
One of the Nictheroy** seamen, Fred
trick Martin, died of pneumonia and
will be bnried ashore.
The America arrired here yeaterday
after a rough trip, and both ve*Mels are
expecting to weigh anchor to-nig lit aud

The officers and crews of both feel full
of fight anti anxious for a brurii with
the enemy.
Cable message* are said to have been
exchanged here between the comman
ders of the Brazilian erurien aud the
home authorities, and they are said to
havt been notified that Admiral de Mel-

meet their two shl|is. This caused all
the more ontlmsiasm among the crew*
of the Nictheroy aud the America.
The destination being a secret, and it
being reported that the crews will not be
allowed to commnnicate with the shore,
it is doubtful when any further news of
President Peixoto'a two crosiers will be
forwarded to the United Btates.
The Associated Press corrosjwndenton

treated by the officers of the ship, and

Those who at first looked upon the
dynamite gun aa being little more than
an experimental plaything hare changed
their minds since they have seen this

successfully fired.
All now look forward with considera

there will be an end to Ad

Th* crew* of the Nictheroy and Amer

and an rovoir to all friends and relativas
at home, and to assure them that they
expect to return to New York in safety,
after having covered themselves with
flory.

THK WOKLII OF COTTON.
CoitlllloBof IbMMarkMt* WatenUy a* lie-
porte«l by Clapp A Co.
New York, Dec. 0 —Cotton opened
a decline of from 5 to 8 points on di»?p-
pointing Liverpool market, and before
noon bad declined about as much more,
the selling prices at 12 o'clock showing
decline of from 0 to 10 point* as com
pared with yesterday'# closing price*.
The chief factor In this depression was
a decline In Liverpool for thi* day of
from 2 to 3.04d, with the tone easy at
the close. A seoondary cause was tbn
continued heavy portward movement,
the estimated receipt# at the ports to
day being 48,000 bale* egatoat85,002 this
day last year. The loss in Liver
pool contract# waa attributed to a
re-estimate mode by Mr. Neill of a crop
of 7,700,00 bales.
A great deal of interest Is still shown
the movement of cotten, ami some
are looking onzlously for a beginning of
reseed movement that Is antici
pated. Others say that we will not se<
much, If any, falling off In receipts. At
U called to the fact that during
cr pert of December of last year
the receipts fell off very materially from
whet they were at the beginning of the I
month. It is apparent that the move
ment and crop are the two essential fac
tors of market-making just now, hence
the anxiety to know what the month
will bring forth In regard to the move
