THE AMgRlCUS TIMES-RECORDER: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 189i.
AMERICUS.
The Commercial Capital of
Southwest Georgia.
Americas Is the county scat of Sumter county,
Georgia, situated at the intersection of the South
western Division ot the Central, tire Savannah
Western, and the Savannah, Ameiicus and M

Arucricus is located in tire tme»t section or i«i
gia, which, by reason of its great fertility
favorable seasons, is enormously productive;
during the last two years cf the civil war prodi-
thc bulk of the supplies for both the Virginia and
Tennessee armies of the Confederacy, there
earning the title of “Egypt."
This immediate section raises a greater vatic
of agricultural and horticultural products th,
any other part of the South; combining all the
fruits, grains and vegetables of the tenijierate
and semi-tropical zones-wheat, corn, rye, barky,
oats, rice, Irish and sweet potatoes, peanuts,
chufas. cotton, peas, sugar cane, apples, pears,
peaches', grapes, plums and other fruits.
This is especially the land of the LcConte pear,
and all varieties of peaches, some of the most su.*
cessful fruit farms being in this section and neai
this city.
The production of sugar care per acre i*
enormous, some farmers having obtained result sol
<300 j>er acre in cane amlsyrupin thiscounty, upon
land valued nt f 10 to $25 per acre.
The climate is mild and equable, the tempe a-
ture seldom going below 30 degrees bahrenheit,
and still more rarely below 25 degrees. Only about
twice in many years has it gone below 2u degrees
There is seldom any icc formed as late as Mardi,
and killing frosts are due about November lOtlv
The summer temperature is never oppressive, b>
reason of continuous breezes from the Gulf ol
Mexico, about 150 miles south.; and a range ol
10 degrees higher than in other sections farther
to the north an I vest is not nearly so oppressive
Since the g**8M 4 introduction some years age
of artesian well .ere is no more healthy section
of the Union ; th va being absolutely no malarial
diseases prevailing, and chills and fevers ar«
almost unknown. The air is pure and dry, and i<
most beneficial to throat and lung diseases. Con
sumption is very rare among the natives, and
many instances of the cure of this disease among
the afflicted from northern sections who come her*
are on record.
The country is high and rolling and the dr.iinr.gt
the very best, and all kinds of outdoor work can
be performed twelve months in tho year without
inconvenience from heat

NAPOLEON'S MIRACULOUS ESCAPES-I
1
lie Seemed to LI vein s Charmed Circle and
Went A boat With No Fear.
In reply to tho question in what en-
gagomeuts ho considered himself to
havo been in the greatest danger of los
ing his life Napoleon onco said, “In
tho commencement of my campaigns. ’’
Indeed if further prnof %v< re demanded
to show that he did not spare himself
nt Toulon it is only necessary to add
that, during the 10 weeks of its
Napoleon, in addition to ;» l»:
wound i»i his thigh, had three
shot under him, while at the siege of
Aero during the expedition t » Egypt h
lost no fewer than tour iM the sam
manner.
During tho last days of his life, when
captivity, disappointment and sickness
had well nigh completed their work, it
is said that the agony of his fatal dis
ease drew from him on many occasions
tho pitiful cry of, “Why did tho cannon
balls spare uie?”
During his long military career Na
poleon fought <50 battles, while Csrsar
fought but 50. In the early part of hi
career ho was utterly reckless of dange:
while on the battlefield, and this spirit
of fearlessness contributed largely t
tho love amt esteem in which ho was
held by his armies. There was a curious
belief among tho English in Napoleon’s
time that he had never been wounded,
and indeed the report was current that
he carefully, if not in a cowardly man
ner, refrained from exposing himself.
Nothing could lx? more con I ran' to tho
truth, for ho was in reality several
times severely wounded, but as he wish
ed to impress upon his troojjs tho lxdief
that g<xxl fortune never deserted him,
and that, like Achilles, he was well
nigh invulnerable he always mado a
secret of his many dangers. He there
fore enjoined once for all upon the part
of his immediate staff the most absolute
silence regarding all circumstances of
this nature, for it is almost impossible
to calculate the confusion and disorder
which would havo resulted from tho
slightest report or the smallest doubt
relative to his existence. Upon the sin-
glo thread of this man’s life depended
not only the fato and government of a
great empire, but tho whole policy and
destiny of Europo ns well.
Gold in transit across tho Atlantic
“sweats, ” no matter how tightly it may
be packed. It is usually sent in stout
kegs and squeezed in as tight ns possi
ble, but there is a regular allowance for
loss by attrition upon the voyage, and
in the course of years this loss to tho
commercial world amounts to a largo
sum.

an indication rf the Ixvltl.Inli c« rf the place* j
the fact is given that out of an ivc-.T.ge school I
attendance of 1,500 chi! ben jut jc«r. time have!
been only three deaths in five ji-ars among them. !
There are Methodist. IJapti-t. Presbytcriin,
Epispcopal and Catholic churches-the baptist
church being a beautiful $25,000 edifice.
The ext y has a good public library; one daily'
and one weekly newspaper of large circulation in ■
this and adjacent counties; a good opera house j
completely furnished first class scenery and j
capable of seating 1,000 people; a well organized]
paid fire department; a first-class system of sani- .
tary sewerage; a large gas and electric lighting j
plant; a telephone exchange; and a complete sys
tem of water works supplying pure spring and
artesian water in abundance. j
Among tho industries ara an extensive iron
works plant, a furniture factory, guano works
and oil mill, two ice factories, planing mills and J
variety works, two carriage factories, a steam ;
laundry, railroad car shops and a number of 1
smaller manufactories, and about two hundred i
firms engaged in mercantile pursuits; five excel-'
lent banks with capital of $t90,(XK); and a loan j
and trust company with very large resources and j
connections; and three excellent hotels with ample J
accommodations, one of which is a magnificent J
winter resort hotel built in 1892, with special ref- I
erenee to t!;e wants of tourists at a cost of j
$150,000, rWnntly furnished, and second to nono !
of the Georgia or Florida winter tourist hotels, j
It has every convenience known to modern hotel j
buildings, such as elevators, water, gas, elec
tricity, baths and steam heating, and is prepared I
to supply every luxury and delicacy desired by !
tourists.
The railroad facilities of Americus are th# i
very lest, there being three direct lines to the j
North and West, and three to Florida, Savannah
and Brunswick; giving all the benefits of com- j
petitive freights to merchants here, who are in '
consequence doing a large wholesale business with I
adjacent counties.
Americus is the centre of tiade for ten counties, I
Comprising the very richest and best agricultural
section of Georgia; the annual cotton receipts
being now 60,000 bales, and the sales of groceries,
drygoods and fertilizers are very large.
Americus is the largest city in Southwest Geor-
la, and is appropriately named the "Commercial
apital of this section, and i» rapidly growing in
‘'“'illation and business. As a healthful place of
Sep.ce, winter and summer, it presents natural
attractions equalled by few cities in the country.
.JKv of all kinds is very reasonable in price,
although \eadily enhancing in value, and any
invest me nts\made in either city real estate or
farming land* are sure to bring a profit to the
buyer at an early date. The inhabitants of both
city and country are cultivated, courteous, and
possessed of the old time hospitality; and a most
cordial welcome will be extended to all people
