THE AMERICUS
TIMES-RECORDER: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, &4.
AIviERICUS.
The Commercial Capital of
Southwest Georgia.
Americus is the county
of Sumter county,
Georgia, situated at the intersection of the South*
western Division ot the Central, the Savannah and
Western, and the Savannah, Americas and Mont
gomery railroads, 71 miles southwest of Macon,
1C miles south cf the celebrated Anders*
prison grounds, about 00 miles fron
Florida line, and 60 mile* ftom Thomasvillc, to
which city it is in all resects equal as a winter
resort, by reason of climate and surroundings.
Americus is located in the finest section of Geor
gia, which, by reason of its great fertility and
favorable seasons, is enormously productive; and
during the last two years of the civil war produced
the bulk of the supplies for both the Virginia and
Tennessee armies of the Confederacy, thereby
earning the title of •’Egypt."
This immediate section raises a greater variety
of agricultural and horticultural products than
any other pait of the South; combining all the
fruits, grains and vegetables of the temperate
and semi-tropical zones—wheat, corn, rye, barley,
oats, rice, Irish and sweet potatoes, peanuts,
chufas, cotton, peas, sugar cane, apples, pears,
peaches, grapes, plums and other fruits.
This is especially the land of the I.eConte pear,
and all varieties of peaches, some of the most sue*
ecssful fruit farms being in this section and neai
this city.
The production of sugar care per acre i«
enormous, some farmers having obtained results of
£300 per acre in cane andsvrupin this county, upon
Had valued at £10 to #25 per acre.
The climate is mild and equable, the tempe-
ture seldom going below 30 degrees Fahrenheit,
end still more rarely below 25 degrees. Only about
twice in many years has it gone below 20 degrees
There is seldom any ice formed as late as Match
and killing frosts are due about November \0tlv
The summer temperature is never oppressive, by
reason of continuous bicozes from the Gulf oi
Mexico, about 150 miles south; and a range ol
10 degrees higher than in other sections farthei
to the north and west is not nearly so oppre;
Since the ge -al introduction some year:

The country is high and rolling and th
the very best, and all kinds of outdoor

Inconvenience from heat or cold.
Americus has a population of over fl.hon, which
is continuously growing; the increase from ’>«» to
1892 being nearly 4,000 or over 11.0 |-or cent.: and
there is today a greater demand for dwellings than
the real estate agents can supply. The city ii
situated on high and pettily rolling hills 1
and has some of the handsomest business blocks
and public buildings to b? found in any city in the
country. The n"w county omit house and j. ii are
among the iine»t of the kind in t* e State; the city
hall is second to none in i>\auty, and the Wirdsoi
Hotel block costing fl.v».0‘») *s surpassed on' by
the DcSoto in savannah in size and beauty. The
new postofiice is a three-story Georgia marble
structure, and complies favorably wl'h •? y
building in Atlanta or Savannah. The l.usi.i- i
blocks arc neatly all handsome Lrlck »ti net tires
that would be crcditabh to any cityot live times
the size of Americus.
The city has the best of public fchoels. and as
an indication cf ihc hea!tlifub:css of t! .* placet
the fact is given that out of an average school
attendance of 1,500 children per year, time have
been only three deaths in five years among them.
There are Methodist. Baptist, Fresbyteri »n,
Epispcopal and Catholic churches—the Haptist
church being a beautiful £25,000 edifice.
The city bas a good public library; one daily
end one weekly newspaper of large circulation in
tjjis and adjacent counties; a good opera house
^mpletcly furnished with first class scenery and
capable of seating 1,000 people; a well organized
paid fire department; a first-class system of sani
tary sewerage; a large gas and electric lighting
plant; a telephone exchange: and a complete sys
tem of water works supplying pure spring and
artesian water in abundance.
Among the industries are an extensive iron
works plant, a furniture factory, guano works
and oil mill, two ice factories, planing mills and
variety works, two carriage factories, a steam
laundry, railroad car shops and a number oi
smaller manufactories, and about two hundred
firms engaged in mercantile pursuits; five excel
lent banks with capital of £400,000; and a loan
and tmst company with very large
connections ; and three excellent hotels with ample
accommodations, one of which is a magnificent
winter resort hotel built in !«.)■>, with special ref-
crenre to thr* wants of tourists at a cost of
$150,000, cLg«..tly furnished, and second to none
of the Oargir or Florida winter tourist hotels.
Itbas every convenience lr..,«vn to modern hotel
buildings, such as elevators, water, gas, elec*
tricity, baths and steam heating, and is prepared
to supply every luxury and delicacy desired by
touriits.
The railroad facilities of Americus are the
very best, there being three direct lines to the
North and West, and throe to Florida, Savannah
and Brunswick; giving all the benefits of com
petitive freights to merchants here, who are in
consequence doing a large wholesale business with
adjacent counties.
Americus is the centre of trade for ten rnnnfi»«

Owing to tire Hard Times They Have Ilad
to Go Without Worliiug Rations.
No enthusiastic inas3 meeting
charity balls or drygoods sales have
been held for the thousands of unem
ployed, ctipplcd and half starved horses
throughout the city. But their suffer-
iugs have been none the less severe bo-
cause there is no powerful relief asso
ciation to aid them. They cannot beg
or steal, sleep in the city hall or eat
soup at a free kitchen, and when they
drop down in their tracks from hunger
and cold the agent for the rendering
company comes and hauls them away ot
the expense of tho taxpayers. Last
month tho number so disposed of reached
into tho thousands. It was moro than
25 per cent larger than at any corre
sponding period during tho last decade.
Hard times came on, and tho hun
dreds of expressmen, cabmen, peddlers
and junk dealers were among tho first to
suffer. Their wages were curtailed,
and they found it difficult to find enough
food for their wives and children, to
say nothing of paying rent and feeding
their horses. If they sold out their
stands” on the corners where they had
been stationed for years, every visible
means of support would vanish, ard
their families would lie compelled to de
pend on charity. Consequently they
made their horses share the hunger of
their children and are earning what
they can.
Last week a ri^binan was hailed by a
gentleman from tin* corner of Wabash
avenue and Van Bun n street, lie want
ed to bo driven in n hurry to an addiess
on North Clark street. The cabman
cracked his whip, and tho cab went rat
tling along the pavement. Just as they
reached the incline leading to the Dear
born avenue bridge the vehicle sudden
ly stopped, and a moment later tho horse
fell. It could not bo induced toriso and
died where it had fallen. Tho cabman
explained, with tears in his eyes:
“I couldn’t mako enough money to
feed him and my children both, and ho
had to get along on hay, and very little
of that. Tliis morning I found him
shivering in tho shed, and I suppose
cold and hunger have killed him.”
It is but on© instauco among tho many.
