Of all tho different animals that go to
make up the animal kingdom a fish is
perhaps the strangest that should bo
chosen for training, yet tho acts dono by
tho three eenls under Captain Weston’s
guidance show that even a fish can do
wonderful things. Those now perform
ing every day are tho oldest seals in
captivity. Seals are extremely delicate,
and they rarely live away from their
native 6ea and rocks for moro than n
year, and yet these seals, Bobby, Bibby
and Tommy, have been performing reg
ularly for six years. Their longevity is
undoubtedly duo to tho fact that they
receive great care.
The exact spot of tho birthplace of
ihe&e sualsisnot known, but when they
were youngsters they were found on ono
of tho islands off Coxslmven in Germany.
Tho German government does all it can
to protect its fisheries, and as seals are
a constant menace to fish tho govern
ment pays a reward of 5 marks for tho
capturo of each seal. There is a famous
goal fisherman in Germany named
\Vorthman, and when Captain Weston,
who had been on many sealing and
wjjaling expeditions in the North sea,
determined that ho would give up the
life of a sailor and become a landlubber
it occurred to him that the training of
se^ls would be novel and profitable. He
w§nt to Worthman, and together they
captured the three sleek little fellows.
There are many islands outside of Coxs-
hnven, aud ono of tho smallest was
chosen. In describing the capture Cap
tain Weston said:
Wo stretched tho net on one side of one
of the smaller islands and then went to
too others aud shot off pistols and made a
noiso, driving many seals into the wa-
fef and against tho net. We had to

Oflly three lpft, and these three are the
samo threo I havo today.
Ono has only a faint idea of the
qjpount of patienco which it requires to
tofu^h a fish, for such a seal really is.
ii Jooks easy to see ono of my seals play
tho banjo or o harp, but it took ino
•three mouths of hard work every day
to teach them to do this even in an im
perfect manner, and the only reason
that I can givo is that they havo been
at it long enough to learn.
I have never before known a seal to
Jivo in captivity over ono year, and yet
I havo had mino many times that. I
am often surprised at their intelligence.
Especially i s this true of Bobby, the
qlown. I beliovo that that fish under-
styijds humor, becauso I10 does things nt
times which actually make mo laugh,
to say nothing about tho audienco. He
is tho best seal I ever had, tho best I
over will havo, and 1 think that ho has
an affection for me, and that ho knows
almost everything that I say to him.
Yes, tho euro of seals is a great ono.
1 keep thorn in n tank, and nbovo tho
water is a shelf for them to lio on when
thoy feci so inclined. This water is
chapged threo times a day, and 20
pounds of salt nro put into the water nt
e(lcb chnnge, for 0 seal cannot live in
fresh water, you know. They are as
plump and fat today as they wero lying
on their natiro rocks in tho North
soa, and they know a great deal more
about tho wovid than they otherwise
would have known. It may surprise
some people, but it is nevertheless n
fact, that theso threo seals cat 500 pounds
of fish a week. They will only eat sea-
fish, such as herring or flounder, and 1
attribute their long lifo to tho fact that
I am very careful with their food. Tho
fish oro waskcl and cleaned and tho
heads cat off just ns carefully and just
as cleanly as though going on a hotel
tablo. Tho acnl does not chow a fish
bnt swallows it whole, and it would
eurpriso you to seo liow a great mass of
fish Will disappear when threo seals get
at it All tho accomplishments of these
seals are not shown. They bavo been
taught water tricks. I can throw a 10
cent picco into n tank of water, nrnl,
small as tho piece is and flat as it lies
on tho bottom, at a word of command
any ono of my 6eals will divo for it and
get It. This I do not show in public,
because tho tank Is nu unwieldy thing
fo keep about.
Havo they ever bitten me? Ves, sev
eral times, and tho seal's hito is a nasty
ono. Tho last timo was when I placed
tho tamhourino In front of Bibby.
Without warning ho grabbed mo by tho
arm, and I certainly thonglit ho would
take a big picco out of it hoforo I could
