Getting the Obelisk Aboard Ship a Pretty

at the time the obelisk was being mov
ed. Tho big stono bad been presented by
the Egyptian government to this coun
try, but tho people were wild about hav
ing it moved. Wo had to placo a guard
around tho men who were working on
tho shaft, nnd even then thero was al
most a riot.
‘Bat that was one of tbo prettiest
pieces of engineering work I have ever
seen. TKo engineers who were moving
onr shaft had a couple of big wooden
cases built that fitted around tho needle
like tho pieces of wood around tho lend
in a pencil. Thero werencoupio of pro
jectiles on each side of the casings just
on tho center of gravity in tho shaft,
like tho trnnnious on a cannon. Under
theso - they put lifting jacks and just
pi ked that immense stono oif its
(k festal, swung it around horizontal
ami then lowered it as gently as could
bo on a long sliding wny. with cannon
balls under it for rollers. They bud n
square hole cut in the stem of tho
steamship and slid it into tho hull
through that and replaced the sheathing
outside.
“Under tho shaft in tho inside of tho
pedestal there wero a lot of bronzo toads
and ornaments and the Lord knows what
not that tho Masons claimed were placed
thero by some of their progenitors eons
ago. I don’t know anything about that,
though, nnd you cun leave it or take it,
as yon choose.
“The British were not half so slick
with tho obelisk they carried over to
England. They 'cased it up in abig
sheet iron arrangement liko a boiler, riv
eted it in and floated tho whole thing
off through a trench dug in tho sand
down to tho water. Then they rigged
jnry sails on it and towed it over to
England, but they lost three or four
men off it before they got it in port and
bad all sorts of a timo generally.
"A couplo of years afterward I saw
tho British obelisk set np on tho east
bank of tbo Thames, and when I came
homo tho first thing I went to soo was
ours in Control park.”—Washington

English Churchyard, anil Tholr Deeply
Graven Accusation, of Murder.
In tho churchyard.-- of Britain several
tombstones exist with tho accusations
of murder deeply engraved upon them.
A stono over thegravo of three children
in Merrington (Durham) churchyard
hears tho following inscription:
Sleeping u-e were slain.
Ami here wo sleep till we must rise again.
In Sandridgo churchyard, Surrey, on
tho tombstono of a custom houso officer
who was shot in an encounter with
smugglers is tho following:
Thou slialt do no murder, nor shall thou steal
Are the commands Jehovah did reveal,
but thou, O wretch, without fear or dread
Of thy tremendous Maker, shot me dead.
On a stono in Cadoxton churchyard,
Glamorganshire, is inscribed tho most
fearful accusation of murder to be found
on any tomb in Great Britain:
“TO IlF.COltU MURDER.
“This stone was erected ovor tho body
of Margaret Williams, aged 20, living
in service in this parish, who was found
dead with marks of violence npou her
in a ditch on n marsh below this church
yard on tho moruiug of Sunday, the
14th July, 1822.
"Although tho savage murderer es
caped for n season tho detection of man,
yet God hath set bisTnark upon him
either for limo or eternity, and tho
cry of blood will ussuredly pursue him
to certain and terribio but righteous
judgment.”
A tombstono stood iu Dulvcrton
churchyard a few yoars ago on which
was inscribed:
Poisoned by the doctor, neglected by tbo auree,
Tbo brother robbed tbo widow, which
the matter worse.
An accusation of murder appears ou
tho tomb of Edwin. thu Irish comedian,
who was buried in St Werbnrgh’s
churchyard, Dublin, and also on tombs
to bo found in Acton churchyard, Glou
ccstersliire; IIoo, near Rochester; Littlo
Stukeiey, and Mytton, near Clitheroo,
Lancashire.—London Tit-Bits.

BSRUN MANNERS.
Customs That Frond Rather Mortifying to
Two American Girls.
Two young girls wero mode miserable
by an unwritten law which laid mo low
not long ago, writes a lady correspond
ent In Berlin. They were catling upon
German women, and as tlioy entered tho
room thoy saw that the least comfort
able seat was tho sofa, where thoy natu
rally seated themselves. One after an
other of tho older women surveyed them
until they became intensely uncomfort
able, not knowing what dire accident
could possibly bavo befallen them. At
last the hostess rose majestically, say
ing:
"Young ladies, will yon he so kind as
to get up and give your scats to theso
older ladles?”
Tho poor things were crushed. My
own encounter with the sofa regulation
was funnier than it was crashing,
went to a mnsicalo given by a countess.
Two daughters of titled houses had been
cordial in thoir overtures, and I was
having a beautiful timo watching littlo
differences of manner .and wondering if
all young women wore expected to
oourtesy and kiss the hands of married
women, as my vis-a-vis was doing. As
the evening wore on I concluded what
well bred pcoplo were, after all, tho
samo everywhere. When supper was an
nonnood, thero was a slight confusion in
the placing of tho guests, and I found
mysolf in a smaller room with a few
others, among them tho most important
woman of tho assembly. Tho table had
been drawn to a sofa, and there is where
I made my mistake. My new friend,
the countess’ daughter, motioned mo to
the sofa, which seemed the best eola
tion of the entanglement Into which onr
hostess had led ns in a moment of flnrry,
for a German docs not npproaoh the ooso
and surety of an American hostess. At
tho samo timo tho woman ot importance
took a seat on the sofa also. As sho ap
parently epoko neither English nor
French, and as I had not been here long
enough to havo acquired fluency In Ger
man, her attempt at a conversation wns
soon givon np
When our hostess oamo to seo if wo
were all happy, our lady of importance
asked who I was, and on receiving a
whispered reply sat up very straight and
threw hcrsolf bock on tho sofa, exoloim
ing, “Ah mats o’est tropl” Iwassoizcd
with a horriblo fear that my hostess
hod told her that I nos an American
reporter, and I was intensely unoomfort-
nble in spite of my companion’s friend
liness. After that the great lady was
very stiff, and I fear I was even stiller.
Looking again to sco if sho had fainted,
I raw her calmly eating with her knifo
and no longer felt uncomfortable. If she
soorned mo for any reason, 1 certainly
should bo ashamed of her at my own ta-
blo. I learned several days later from
au American woman versed in German
proprieties that my unpardonable offonso
had been in presuming to sit on tho sofa
beside my lady without n European title
of high rank to back mo np
