Commercial Capital of
Southwest Georgia.
Americus is the county scat of Sumter county,
Ccorsia, situated at the intersection of the South-
western Division ot the Centra!, the Savannah and
Western, and the Savannah, Americas and Mont
gomery railroads, 71 miles southwest of Macon,
IP miles south of the celebrated Andersonville
prison grounds, about 00 miles from the
Florida line, and 60 miles from Thomasville. to
which city it is in all respects equal as a winter
resort, by reason of climate and surroundings.
Amcricus is located in the finest section of Geor
gia, which, by reason of its great fertility and
favorable seasons, is enormously productive; and
during the last two years of tlie civil war produced
the bulk of the supplies for both the Virginia and
Tennessee armies of the Confederacy, thereby
earning the title of “Egypt.”
This immediate section raises a greater variety
of agricultural and horticultural products than
any other part of the South; combining aii the
fruits, grains and vegetables of the temperate
and semi-tropical zones—wheat, corn, rye, barley,
oats, rice, Irish rnd sweet potatoes, peanuts,
chufas, cotton, peas, sugar cane, apples, pears,
peaches, grapes, plums and other fruits.
This is especially the land of the LeConte pear,
and all varieties of peaches, some of the most sue*
ccssful fruit farms being in this section and neat
this city.
The production of sugar care per acre
enormous, some farmers having obtained resultsol
#900 per acre in cane and syrup in this county, upoa
land valued at #10 to #23 per
The climate is mild and equable, the tempe*a-
ture seldom going below 30 degrees Fahrenheit;
and still more rarely below 25 degrees. Only about
twice in many years has It gone below 20 degrees
There is se’dom any ice formed as late as March,
and killing frosts are due about November 10th
The summer temperature is never oppressive, by
reason of continuous breezes from tlie Gulf oi
Mexico, about 150 miles south; and a range ol
10 degrees higher than in other sections farthei
to the north and west is not nearly so oppressive
Since the general Introduction some years age
of artesian well- there is no more healthy sectlor
of the Union; tVrebeing absolutely no malarial
diseases prevailing, and chills and fevers art
almost unknown. The air is pure and dry, and ii
most beneficial to throat and lung diseases. Con
sumption is very rare among the natives, and
many instances of the cure of this disease among
the afflicted from northern sections who come lien
are on record.
The country is high and rolling and the drainagt
the very best, and all kinds of outdoor work can
be performed twelve months in the year without
Inconvenience from heat or cold.
Amerlcus has a population of over 6,000, which
Is continuously growing; the increase from !M6to
1802 being nearly 4,000 or over ICO per cent.; and
there is today a greater demand for dwellings than
the real estate agents can supply. The city ii
situated on high and prettily rolling hills*
and has some of the handsomest business blocks
and public buildings to b: found in any city in the
country. The n' w county court house and jail are
among the finest of the kind in the State; the city
hall is second to none in beauty, and the Windsoi
Hotel block costing #150,000 is surpassed on!'.’ by
the DeSoto in Savannah in size and beauty. The
new postoffice is a thr-e-story Georgia marble
structure, and compares favorably with an'
building in Atlanta or Savannah. The businvi
blocks arc nearly all handsome brick structures
that would be creditable to any city of five times
the size of Amcricus.
The city has the best of public schools, and as
an indiotlon cf tlie hejltlifulncss of the place,
the fact is given that out of an average school
attendance of 1,500 children per year, there have
been only three deaths in five years among the
There arc Methodist, Baptist, Presbyter! i
Epispcopal and Catholic churches—the Baptist
church being a beautiful #25,000 edifice.
The city has a good public library; one daily
undone weekly newspaper of large circulation in
this and adjacent counties; a good opera house
cymplctciy furnished with first class scenery and
capable of seating 1,000 people; a well organized
paid fire department; a first-class system of sani
tary sewerage; a large gas and electric lighting
plant; a telephone exchange; and a complete sys
tem of water works supplying pure spring and
artesian water in abundance.
Among the industries are an extensive iron
works plant, a furniture factory, guano works
and oil mill, two ice factories, planing mills and
variety works, two carriage factories, a steam
laundry, railroad car shops and a number of
smaller manufactories, and about two hundred
firms engaged in mercantile pursuits; five excel
lent banks with capital of #(00,800; and a loan
and trust company with very large resources and
connections; and three excellent hotels with ample
accommodations, one of which is a magnificent
winter resort hotel built in 1802, with special ref
erence to tire wants of tourists at a cost of
§150,000, elegantly furnished, and second to none
of tne Georgia or Florida winter tourist hotels.
It has every convenience kr*u*vn to modern hotel
buildings, such as elevators, water, gas, elec
tricity, baths and steam heating, and is prepared
to supply every luxury and delicacy desired by
tourists.
The railroad facilities of Amerlcus are the
very best, there being three direct lines to the
North and West, and three to Florida, Savannah
and Brunswick; giving all the benefits of com
petitive freights to merchants here, who are in
consequence d<-ing a large wholesale business w ith ,
adjacent counties.
Ameiicus is the centre of trade for ten counties,

Kicked Out When a Boy, He Lived to Re
p»y the Offender.
A story with n moral is told mo by a
friend from Bloomington, Ind. That
pretty little university town numbers
among its notabilities not only tho col
lego professors, hut another professor
also, whoso accomplishment lies not in
tho diroction of human education,
mean gonial Henry Gentry, known
wherever there aro littlo and big chil
dren, who like to seo his performing dogs
and ponies. Professor Gentry was a very
poor boy, which was no dishonor, but
still much against him in the race of
lifo. During tho last few years ho has
mndo a fortune. I am afraid to say how
much, but it must bo up in the hundred
thousands. Ten years ago he was still
struggling to mako a living for himself
and his parents, and vory often it was
hard enough. And thereby hangs my
tale.
Every ono knows how difficult it was
for business men to keep heads above
water during tho hard times and what
a serious matter it was to obtain money,
but Gentry had plenty of it all through
and is said to havo helped more than
one man over the stepping Btones.
Ono day a vory prominent business
man of his own was casglit short and
needed $5,000 to seo him through. Ho
had property and vnlues, hut no money.
He went to tho bank and asked for a
loan, butwa3 suavely told that tiio bank
had it not. Just ns tho conversation
was going on Henry Gentry happened
to pass the bank, and the banker remark
ed, “Thoro’s only ono man in town who
has that mnch cash, and maybe he’ll
lend it to you. ” Ho pointed to Gentry.
Thu business man took tho hint, step-
peel out of tho bank, caught up with
Gentry, and after a very complimentary
talk on his success broached his request.
Gentry turned full upon him and re
plied: “Oh, yes, I liavo $.>,000; more
too, but do yon remember a barefoot lad
who caw into yonr storo at ono time
trying to buy a pair of shoes on trust?
Do you romomber how you kicked him
almost out of yonr storo? Well, I was
that boy. No, you can’t liavo no money
from me!” Maybo it was not very
Christian, but it must have been awful
ly sweet revenge. —Louisville Courier-
Journal.

Amcricus Is the largest city in Southwest Geor
gia, and is appropriately named the “Commercial
Capital” of this section, and is rapidly growing in
population and business. As a healthful place of
residence, winter andsummer.it presents natural
attractions equalled by few cities in the country.
Property of all kinds is very reasonable in price,
although steadily enhancing in value, and any
investments made la cither city real estate or
farming lands are sure to bring a profit to the
buyer at an early date. The inhabitants of both
city and country are cultivated, courteous, and
possessed of the old time hospitality; and a most
cordial welcome will be extended to all people
from whatever quarter who desire to cast their lots
in this favored section.
To enterprising manufacturers, judicious capi
talists and industrious farmers this region offers
the finest opportunities. Every concession and
advantage wifi be given to those who desire to
establish manufactories, large or} small, in this
city, and with abundance ot ravtusuateriai at hand
and cheap fuel obtainable, no better location can
be found for succevsful manufacturing.
Farmers from the bleak regions of the West
could find here conditions that would bring
speedy wealth from the cultivation of a most
generous and productive soil; and the develop#
ment that is steadily increasing by reason of rail
road extension in Southwestern Georgia will in h
few years cause lands to sell for $25 to #50 g*r acre
that can now be bought from #5 to #15.
Untold quantities of pine, oak and cypres,
timber are near at hand and easily accessible by
rail, and the manufacture ot these into various
articles of trade, from railroad cars down to
clothes pins cannot but be sery profitable. Capi
talists will find here not only every facility and
advantage, but every encouragement from the
citizens to locate in Americas and Sumter county.
Any detailed information in regard to the city
or country will be cheerfully furnished by the
