HE ADDRESSED A LARGE AUDIENCE
AT THE OPERA HOUSE
Upon tbs Vltnl Inna of tbs Day—Tariff
itefotm and tbs Financial Qnesilon Ats
Discussed at Length, as Ars Otbsr Ini'
portent Top os.
Sanator Watsb arrived by tbs after
noon train from Macon yeaterday. Ha
was met at tho tjepot by a committeo of
cltlz-as and escorted to The Windsor,
whoro he received informally a large
number of prominent demoornts trbo
congratulated him upon his splendid
work In Congress.
Later, accompanlel by Messrs Thirn
ten Wheatley, John Windsor and
Charles R. Crisp, be was driven over
our beautiful city.
A large and representative audience
bad assembled at the opera bouse at 8
o’clook to bear the distinguished eena
tor upon the political Issues of the day,
Upon the stage were seated Cl air
man Mathis, of tbs County Democratic
Committee, Chairman Hanesley, of the
Campaign committee, Judge W. H.
Fisb, Judge W. F. Clark, Messrs. C. R.
Crisp and Baacom Myriok.
Senator Walsb’e appearance in the
opera house was tho signal for long and
continued applause, which subsided
in'y tvbeu Judge Welborn F. Clark
advanced and in bis happiest manner
presented Georgia's junior senator to
tbe large audlenco.
As tbe tpplause that greeted blm sub'
sided Senator Walsh opened his speeeb
and at once ontered vigorously upon the
discussion of tbe great issues of
the day. His arguments upon tho
tariff were clear and logics’, end
fully demonstrated that tbo party
he repreicnted had beon true
the work of tariff reform. He spoke
of the necessity of standing by tbe ad'
ministration in the struggle against re
publican mlsiul”, In spite of the differ
ences on questions of policy.
Tho speaker gave tome Interesting
llguies on revenues and expenditures
under demoeratio and republican ad
ministrations, and showed what the
former had done In the manner of relief,
especially In reference to the new tariff
bill.
The financial question, he said, waa
one of tbe principal Issues of the dsy. He
said that he farorel the free and unlim
ited coinage of silver at tbe ratio
of 10 to 1, the ratio that ao long
prevailed and still prevailed. Let the
mints be opened to the freo eolnsge ut
silver, said he, and yon will see better
prlees paid for cottoe, corn and wheat,
better business conditions, and the
Sontb will loom up as the garden spot
of these United States.
The Income (ax bill, the repeal of the
ten per cent tax on etato banks and
other vital questions wero discussed at
considerable leDgth. Thn former, bo
■aid, was a just tax and bed como to
stay,and Instead ol r filing only 830,000,-
000 annually tbiroftom be government
should raise tlirco times that amount.
Tbo tax on stato bank lssufs,-l.e said,
waa ttncoaMlitillonal, anti he believed
tho government would ultimately repeal
It.
Ashe touched upon tho third party
the few pops lu tho audloneo were in
clined to dodge, but ha only rlferred
briefly and humorously to their
fanatical Ideas. He said there
oonld never be any but tbe too great
parties now In existence, and that
a vote for populism and against the dcm.
ocratlo party waa really a vote In favor of
republicanism. He mentioned a number
of tho bills introduced by populists in
congress, "and showed that while that
party posed as an economical one there
bills contemplateu appropriations
amounting to more than $30,000,000,000,
Senator Walsh’* speech was a lucid
and forcible expression of the strong
points of the demoeratio poiitlon, and
waa well received. Hia peroration waa
eloquent aid beautiful, and elicited
prolonged applauie.
Tbe eenator left by the 10:40 train
last night for Brunewlek, where le will
apeak to-day.
William McGhee, a negro living on
Sheriff L. B. Forrest’s plantation, got
into the toll* yesterday In trying to
protect his employer’# property, and
while delivering a prisoner to that
officer waa likewise delivered by the
aforosald prisoner. ;
Williams caught a colored brother In
the oanepatcb, and arresting blm
brought him in triumph to the city. He
also brought bis pistol, and this alone
caused Willism’s woes.
The pistol was carried lu his upper
coat pocket, the handle being clearly
visible. In walking over the rough
roads the “gun" was jolted down until
It could no longer be seen, even escap
ing tho attention of tho conquering hero
who carried it.
But the-cane breaker knew It was
thore, and as he bade William farewell
at tbe jail door called the nfllcer’s atten
tion to the pistol. A search was losil-
tuled, and to ths horror of the owner
the concealed weapen was found. Judge
Hlxon let him off with a floe if $83,
which Sheriff Forrest promptly paid.

The day of election is drawing near
and tbe fight grows warmer still. The
demoeratio hostr, confide at of an over
whelming victory at the polls next
Wednesday, are forcing tbe fighting In

Tho democrats of Sumter wero never
so much in earnest, and unless all signs
fail will bury populism in this county
too deep for resurrection on election
day. They aro on the aggreBsivo, ami
will not leave the field until victory Is
thelis.

Given a fair ehanco and an even start
tho demoeratio party wilL out-distance
any trotter on tbe track. The Whigs
hate tiled it, tho know-nothings have
triad it, the republicans have tried It,

In the long race of more than a century
It baa been mud-bespattered, has bad
dust thrown in Its eyes and has had 111

defeats, yet it has always risen, cleaned
