Judge Crisp’* Macon speech wu a
masterplcco of --r.tnry, iUmoluted with
democratic fn- ts that no man can so
forcibly exr-umt as the distinguished
speaker. At the conclusion of Judge
Crisp's able argument he was presented
with a handsome floral offering, accom
pauled with this prophetlo sentiment:
If r. Jamee H. Blount raised the large
and handsome bouquet shore his head,
at the same Urns exclaiming: “I hare
. been requested to present this bouquet
to the next ride-president of the United
States.”
At this the crowd nearly went wild.
Men yelled and slapped eaoh other on
the baok, while the ladles In the galleiy
clapped .their hands and wared their
handkerchiefs. If r. Crisp, with the gal
lantry and grace of a Chesterfield, ac
cepted the bouquet with a bow, while
but few noticed that his face was crim
son with blushes.
Speaker Crisp will address the people
of Floyd county at Borne this morning,
returning home tonight or tomorrow.
ADJUSTED THE DAMAGES.
The Insurance Companies Settle tWrLoss-
ee bp the Bceent Tiro.
The companies carrying Ipeuranoe on
the stock of Mr. George D. Wheatley, a
portion of which was damaged by fire
Thursday morning, made a full and sat
isfactory settlement yesterday through
Mr. Dox, of Atlanta, whose prompt
manner of adjustment is to be highly
commended.
In this connection It migbt not be
amiss to again refer to the splendid
work done on this oeoaslon by our
excellent fire department. By superior
management the fire was extinguished
with a loss of a fewjmndred dollars,
when otherwise the damages might hare
reached $20,000 or more.
Americas has just cause to be proud
of her fire department, the equal of any

there is every reason why the Tariff
Association should give this city a much
lower rate of Insurance than that now
existing, and whloh has existed for

The Imported negro Gaines, who baa

recently In the interest of the third par

dozen “pope" in the grove near the
Central depot yeaterday. It wu about
the aame speech he has made all over
the county.
To the surprise of the half dozen
democrats who heard Guinea through
curiosity, none of his bosses thought
enough of him to take seats with him on
the stage. ■ Gaines, apparently, felt the
alight keenly.
In the course of his abuse of the

meeting of the next legislature a law
would be passed disfranchising both the
negro and the populist Like his white
leaders, all the crimes committed since
the time of Adam were charged to the
democratic party.
He held up for inspection an alleged
picture of a democrat whipping a negro
woman, but said nothing of the ease of
one of his own party in this oonnty who
beat a negro woman nearly to death with
a club only a few months ego.
The equality line was touched upon,
but like his other utterances aroused
llttlo enthusiasm among his hearers.

‘Dear Sir—Tour earnest attention la
directed to a moveoient Inaugurated In
the last few days by the leaders of the
populist party, ft la vitally Important
that it should be met at onee, and its
evident purpose frustrated. Briefly
sUted.it Is this:
‘Reliable information baa been re
ceived at democratic headquarters that
an organized aeheme has been arranged
throughout the (Utc, by which the
popnilaU at all of tbepreelnoU, more
particularly those In the country, pro
pose to capture the management of tho
■oh to an thebe. election by the selection of three free-,
A Suggestion to th. Herebsst. of AmtH- holders who are In sympathy with their

the law, unless the regular effioers pro
vided by the law, and to whom tho
election blanks are sent by the ordinary
In eaoh oonnty abonld be Ute In reach
ing the preoineU at which the elections
are to be held.
We urge upon you, therefore, to give
the matter your Immediate attention
and see that all managers who have been
furnished with these blanks are upon
the soene of the election before the polls
are opened.
The law of the aUte requires that the
ordinary In each county in the aUto
should be furnished by the secreUry of
aUte with these printed blanks thirty
days beforo the eleotlon. Thle law has
been eomplled with, and eaoh ordinary
In the stale wu, on the first day of Sep
tember, furnished with these blanks.
NotwItbsUndlng this, however, the lead
ers of the populist party, at their own
expense, have printed those blanks and
propose to use them.
We see In this movement a double
purpose: first, to practice fraud upon
the vote of the people, aod, secondly, to
give oolor to contests over the result of
the election, which mutt be deplored by
every good citizen as Involving confu
sion and hurt to the best interest of the
state. This departure on the part of the
populists from a praotioe so well estab-
liebed and regulated by law demon
strates to what extremes that party la
driven, and should of Itself convince
every reflecting citizen of the neceulty
of an overwhelming democratlo major
ity.
“Your attention la directed In this
connection to section 1260 of the code of
1662, which provide! as follows: 'The
time of day tor keeping opon election Is
from 7 u. m. to 0 p. m. at tho court-
houso, and from S.a. m. to 8 p. m. In the
country precincts.’ As a further precau
tionary measure, we advlso that upon
receipt of this letter you Immediately
seo the ordinary of yocr county and
ascertain whether the printed blanks for
both tho courthouse and country pre
cincts have been received, and If they
liavo not, that you Immediately advise
the secretary of etate by wire. Very
respectfully, A. S Clay, Chairman.”
