The exports at southern ports are in
creasing rapidly, while the exports at
New York are falling off. The Eceptre
of commerce has departed from the east
and rests in the hand of the south. .The
east is making a desperate effort to hold
its supremacy. It is proposed to spend
many millions on a ship canal that will
open, the great lakes to the Atlantic.
On the other hand Chicago is cutting a
canal to the Mississippi river, and the
great northwest looks upon the Father
of Waters as a natural ontlet to the
sea. It is a battle of giants. There
can be no doubt as to the ultimate re
sult. The channel of the Mississippi
river will one day be straightened, the
water will be accelerated in speed
and will deepen the channel, and the
great ocean vessels will take on their
cargoes of grain at the docks of Chica
go and St. Lonis. Then the east will
be left high and dry; and the west and
the south will be the great commercial
empires of the world.

loesee of the civil war, and at the same
time have perceived that their own;
prosperity depends upon the expansion
of Southern industries. At the Atlan
ta Exposition, accordingly, railway ex
hibits held a prominent place. Some
of the most instructive collections of
Southern products were supplied by
the Southern Railway, the Seaboard
Air Line, the Plant System and various
ell known lines, with the object of at
tracting immigrants mid capital to the
South. A tike effort is being made at
Nashville, with the result of adding
greatly to the value of the Exposition
as a revelation of Southern resources.
A striking display is made by the
Nashville, Chattanooga 4 St. Louis
Railway. It is said to be more elabor
ate than any ever made at any exposi
tion. It embraces, for example. 100
varieties of wood grown in the region
tlje railway traverses and 100 different
crops, including both garden and field
products. The abnndant flora of the
entire south east of- the Mississippi is
handsomely illustrated. The show of
minerals embraces the rich variety of
marbles found in Tennessee and Geor
gia, with Indian relics from these and
other states. Relics of the war be
tween the Confederacy and the United
States constitute an important item of
the collection of attractions. The Sea
board Air Line displays a mammoth
car, illustrating the luxuries of modern
travel. It also shows in the agricultu
ral building the varied resources of
Virgin^ and the Carolinas, through
sikecimen products and industries.
Cotton, turpentine, tobacco, grains
fruits, peanuts, etc., are made the
texts for instructive displays.
The Southern Railway gives promi
nence to the industrial wealth and
parity of the South in its exhibits of’
the ores, coal, stones, woods, timber,
forest products, grains, fibres, frnits,
etc., of Virginia, the Carolinas, Geor
gia, Alabama, Mississippi, East Ten
nessee and Kentucky—the vast region
reached by its main lines and branches.
Cotton mill products are shown in full
detail. Especially interesting is the
illustration of the extent to which the
production of iron, silver, lead, zinc,
gold, tin, nickel and other metals has
been carried within its area. The dis
play of economic minerals, corundum,
emory, baryta, asbestos, monazite and
clays, receives much attention. The
development of the mineral resources
of the South is relied upon by the
Southern and other railways to diver
sify and increase greatly the volnme of
their business.
The plant sytsem pays special atten
tion to a display of Florida’s varied at
tractions. The tropical wealth of the
coral State is shown by reproductions
of bits of Florida scenery, embracing
trees, plants, shrubbery, flowers, etc.
Its agricultural and industrial capaci
ties are shown in displays of rice,
sugar, wines, oranges, lemons, cocoa-
nuts, sponges, bananas, cotton, banana
fibre, sisal hemp and other like pro
ducts.
The Georgia Railway, Chicago k
Northwestern, Chicago, Milwaukee A
St. Paul and Don Mountain railways
also present attractions calculated to
attract travel and business to the sec
tions they traverse!.—-Baltimore Sun.
