Roberta' successor in Congress is a bachelor, and hence can not be refused his seat on the charge of polygamy. Philadelphians are rejoicing over prospect that the census .will give their city a population of about 1,295,000, an iucreaso of nearly 25 per cent since 181K). Tho v ChincM boxers, assisted by the imperial troops of China, are cansing havoc at Tien Tsia. Bnt the' retribu tion will come, and the Chinese will hare to pay the penalty. As yet the United BUtes Government is loath to declare that a state of war exists, bnt it will hare to recognize the inevitable. Congressman Joseph Bailey of Texas should congratulate himself npon his friends—two of them, at least. Jliey are Ex-Gov. Francis of Missouri and Congressman Sibley of Pennsylvania. Both are very rich men, and, they de sire to see Mr. Bailey rich also. Re cently, it is stated, they purcliased for Mr. Bailoy a Texas ranch worth $250, - 000, allowing him thirty years in which to pay for it. Mr. Bailey says be expects to pay the amount within twelve years. . The united powers seem to have un derestimated the fighting capacity and equipment of the Chinese army just as the British at first did those of the Boers. More troops wjll have to be sent to Chins, bnt the result is oertftb, the Chinese Government will have to make terms. What is of importance to the United States is that these terms shall insure the integrity of the Chinese empire. The United States Government does not desire’s partition of China, does not desire landed pos sessions in China, bnt does desire peace and trade opportunities. Great Britain desires the>ame^thing and not land acquisitions. The United States and Great Britain shonld be able to preserve the Chinese empire, thought joining with the other powers in de manding the overthiow of the Dowager Empress and the establishment of an emperor and his advisers who recog nize the binding force of treat y obliga tions. Wo want an open door in China to onr trade and must assist in sup pressing revolutions based on the cry, “death to the foreigners,” and are thns forced into participation in the present Chinese troubles. Peace with the world is the object of those United £ tates, bnt they cannot shirk responsi bility when forced upon them and must do their port in teaching China a lesson. RENOMINATED PRESIDENTS. A handsome Indian maiden at Wi chita, who had been educated in the East, inserted an advertisement in a New York paper to the effect that she wanted “a city young man to marry her and care for her estate of $10,000.” Within two weeks she had received over 2,000 replies. She answered sev eral hundred of the letters and finally decided to xiake a selection from ton of the correspondents. There was, how- oyer, an Indian lover in the way. He asked her if she had determined to marry a whiteman. She replied “yea” when he drew a revolver and shot her dead, and then killed himself.—New Orleans States. That speculative markets are uncer tain is shown by the tumble in the New York cot.on market on Monday. 1 Unfavorable crop news upset the market, and for a while prices went skyward. Then the rebound commenced, and all operators sought cover. On Tuesday moderation prevailed, the market was dull, the excitement having abated, and prices for a time advanced but slowly. The wheat market in Chicago is liable to show similar slumps, for though weather and crops reports may be for tho time unfavorable until the entire crop of the country is harvested and the output of foreign countries known, it will bo impossible to esti mate the demand which will be made npon our surplus for export. In the meantime market operator* will toss pricea to and iregardless of tho iA*tmDi«ity that the total yield may not, with stocks on hand, amount almost if not to on average supply. The renomination of FresidenUMc- Kinley for a second term leads tho Atlanta Journal to recall the fact that it has been twenty-eight years since a president of ibe United States has been elected to succeed himself. Grant was the last to received, such an honor. Of our twenty-five presidents only seven have'been elected for two successive terms, namely: Wash- l/JRGINIA ington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, Lincoln and Grant. Grover Cleveland has the distinction of being the only man who was ever elected after being defeated for re- election. Three presidents who were nominated for second terms have been dofeatetK-John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Harrison. Andrew Jackson was de feated in 1824 by a coalition between the friends of Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, but was elected over whelmingly in 1828 and 1832. Mr. Bryan wij.1 be the only man, except Jackson, who after failing in his first race for the presidency was put for ward by kis party at the next election. REMEDIES. The Chicago Record, discussing somebody’, proposition to foster tho emigration of negroes from the United States to the Hswsiisn Islands, sa,s: “Unforfunstel, for the plan which contemplates transferring man, ne groes in a mass from the states to Hawaii, the native Hawaiians have an ineradicable dislike for them. An, attempt to unite natives and negroes in political or social life would meet with fail ore, and it ia possible that the pease and prosperity of the islands would then really suffer." It is a pity that this regard for raoe prejudice was not considered in Illinois and elsewhere in tho North thirty, odd years ago, when tho ignorant blacks were forced os political equals npon the white men of tlio South. It tho people of the North had been as considerate of their own eonnbrymen—men ef their own.hiood and hone—as this Oliioago paper is of the Kanakas of the Sandwich Islands, much bad feeling and bloodshed would have been averted.—Savannah News. a Estimates made by the Boston Her ald ore that at the present rate of con sumption the snpply of lamber within the United States is likely to be ex hausted within twenty-five years. It states that 20,000,000,000 cubic feet are used annually, 5,000,000,000 of which are used for making paper and 15,000,- 000,000 for other purposes. The value of forest products used in the United States is estimated to be $1,000,000,000 annually, nearly twice the value of tho output of all the mines, quarries, pe troleum wells and other mineral pro ducts of the country. In Europe tim ber is cut at the rate of 20,000,000 tons per month, and in the United States at two and one-half times that rate. The preservation of the forests is one of the pressing and important questions of the day. The torch lighted -in China may set the ‘world on fire. The nations are hurrying there, like wolves around a dying deer, each waiting for its share.
