SUMTER FARMERS
SHOULDjORGANIZE
To Protect Themselves m Sale of
Their Cotton.
BETTER.PRICES WILL BE GIVEN
I
If Cotton Is Not Rushed Upon Market
as Heretofore Messrs. Pope Brown
and Harvey Jordan Will Address
Farmers Here on 28th.
Iq union there is srtengtb, and a
I union of the farmers to the end of pro
tecting themselves in the sale of their
J cotton next fall will mean thousands of
I dollars in their pockets. In other coun
ties they are organizing already, and
Sumter must not lag behind in this im
portant work.
In Georgia and throughout “the
. belt” the farmers are coming together.
To the end of advising with our farm-
■ ers and explaiding the plans proposed
for the more advantageous sale of their
cotton, a meeting will be held in Am
ericus on Saturday, July 28th.
Hon. Pope Brown, .president of the
Georgia Agricultural Society, and
Hon. Harvie Jordan, president of the
Cotton Growers Association, have been
invited to address the farmers here
upon this very important question, and
have agreed to come to Americus on
the date mentioned.
They will speak at Vienna the day
1 before, and are anxious to discuss the
■ subject with Sumter’s farmers on 28th.
President Jordan writes enthusias
tically upon the subject in a letter to
Capt. M. B. Council. He believes
that under existing conditions, and
by proper handling of the next crop,
that farmers can easily obtain 10 cents
for their cotton from the opening to
the close of the season.
In nearly all the Southern states he
is organizing the farmers and securing
cooperation in the sale of the next cot
ton crop. It is a great work and
means millions to the South.
Let the farmers come to hear these
gentlemen on Saturday, 28th.
If perfect organization is effected the
true facts regarding crop conditions
can be secured until the cotton is mar
keted, and farmers will thus be pro
tected against Neill and others of his
kind whose reports of enormous crops
in years past have enriched the spin
ners at the farmers expense.

The city authorities are making every

STEAMER DOLPHIN'S
SENSATIONAL TRIP
Negro Crew, Led By West In
dians, In Mutiny.
ATTACKED BY CANNABALS
Man-Eating Natives Attempt to Burn
the Ship In the Straits of Magellan.
Almost Destroyed By a Hurricane.
Village W iped Out By Eire.
San Francisco, July 9. —The steamer
Dolphin from New York has had a sen
sational trip, according to Captain Rad
cliffe.
He took on board at St. Lucia eight
natives to asti.-t the crew. The vessel
carried to sea three stowaways, one of
whom proved to be a notorious bandit,
another an escaped murde ?er and the
third a lunatic. Edward Palmerer, a
negro, the steward, assumed an inde
pendent attitude before the Dolphin was
past Sandy Hook. Three days out from
St. Lucia, he attacked a fireman named
McAllister, with a chair, and laid his
scalpopen. The steward was put in irons
and the ca’tain ami Chief Engineer
Winter took six stitches in the nreman’s
head. The West Indians then became
friendly with the negro crew’, and they
when and as they pleased.
They were only kept from open mutiny
by a show of arms.
After coaling at Montevideo, the Dol
phin was nearly wrecked by a hurricane
and in the straits of Magellan an at
tempt was yiade to set fire to the vessel
by the man eating natives.
On reaching Punta Arenas, at the
entrance to the straits of Magellan, they
found that the town had nearly been
wiped out of existence by the Patagoni
ans. The natives had made a descent
on the place, killed 14 of the Ciliano sol
diers and set fire to the building. A
delegation came out from the post and
after telling the captain asked for some
firearms and powder. The captain pre
sented them with a 3-inch gun and a
quantity of ammunition.
At Coronel, a Chilean coaling port,
the coal passers obtained liquor and
went on the war path and could not be
subdued. They seized all the fire axes
and threatened to kill everybody on
board. Purser Holmes and Second En
gineer Carroll went ashore for assist
ance. The nearest troops were 10 miles
away, but a special train was sent for
them by the governor. The port was
swarming with desperate characters and
an attempt was made to kill Holmes and
Carroll.
“When we got back to the steamer,”
said Holmes, “the mutineers had the
crew and everything in full possession.
The steward aud firemeu were taken
ashore in irons and next day a court of
inquiry was held on the Dolphin. The
court sentenced the six, ringleaders to
three months each in the calaboose. In
the crowd was the steward and the
three stowaways from St. Lucia.”

Pantone’s Light Burns Amidst a Holy
Calm
The long anti heated controversy
over the Pantone light matter was ef

and Pantone is triumphant. In mov
ing to reconsider the action of council
in voting a light at the point desig
nated, unless the lights now contracted

clude Mr. Pantone, Mayor Hixon took
the floor and made a lengthy speech.
He said that the city was already up to
the neck on expenditures, and should
other citizens, taxpayers, ask for lights
now the council would be in an em
barrassing position unless said re
quests were granted. This, he said,
could be obviated by so changing the
lights now used, if possible, to include
Pantone. On voting upon the substi
tute it was lost by the usual vote of
four to three and the Pantone light,
after weeks of controversy, will be es
tablished at an additional expense
