The business streets were as quiet
yesterday as upon a midsummer day.
Merchants and clerks were not rushed
in the least.
The Gentry show, which comes here
next Monday as an old favorite, is
said to be larger and far better than
ever before.
Only two months of the first year of
the new century remain. To many it
has been a year of trials, vicissitudes
and reverses.
Americus is now entirely free of
scarlet fever or contagious disease of
any kind. And the wißh of all is that
it may remain so,
Mr. T. G. Scott was here yesterday,
talking up the great Montezuma Car
nival. He says that large crowds are
coming to the show.
Many choice seats for the Freder
ick Warde engagement are vet to be
had, though his audience will be the
largest of the season.
The shooting season begins today,
and henceforth the career of Bob
White and his family will be in jeop
ardy to a great extent.
The street force is still working upon
the McGarrah street bridge. In the
meantime travel to that part of the
city is via Plum street.
The fearful wrecks occurring a few
days ago will put the Sells k Fore
paugh’s and Buffalo Bill’s big shows
out.of business for a time.
This is a weather market, and noth
ing but a white frost will help the
prioe of cotton. This is the opinion
of cotton men in Americus.
The gospel tent was pulled down
yesterday and the lumber and debris
oleared from the hotel park. The tent
has been shipped to Vienna.
A Fiendish Attack.
An attack was lately made on C. F.
Collier of Cherokee, lowa, that nearly
proved fatal. It esme through his kid
neys. His back got so lame he could
not stoop without great pain, nor sit in
a chair except propped by cushion s. No

Jumped On a Ten Penny Nail
The little daughter of Mr. J. N.
Powell jumped on an inverted rake
made of ten penny nails, and thrust one
nali entirely through her foot and a
second one half way through. Cham

T. Miller Yesterday.
That very delightfal social organiza
tion, the Matrons Clnb, held its initial
meeting of the fall season yesterday
afternoon. Upon this occasion the club
was charmingly entertained by Mrs.
George Twiggs Miller at her lovely
home on Lee street. The parlor decor
ations were indeed beautiful, roses and
ferns transforming it into a veritable
fairyland. This meeting, so pleasant
ly anticipated, brought out the fnll
membership of the Matrons Clnb, and
many exquisite gowns were worn.
After cards were laid aside a most de
licious menu of ices and punch was
served and the occasion was, withal,
one of most delightfal of the many suc
cesses scored by the Matrons Club.
