Cotton Market Is Steadily On the
Decline.
DROPS ANOTHER DOZES POINTS.
Enormous Port Receipts For Week
Ending Yesterday. January Cot
ton Breaks Belo thew Lowest Point
of the Season.
When the cotton market opened yes
terday firm in tone and at an advance
over prices of the day before, Ameri
cus buyers and sellers hoped the turn
ing point had finally been reached and
that the reaction in prices, so long ex
pected, was now at hand.
January, the speculative month,
opened at 7.51 and the tone was firm.
An boar later it dropped to 7.37.
i Estimated receipts were large, while
Ithe total port receipts for the week,
ending yesterday, were simply enor
mous, going away over receipts for
this week a year ago.
It was 408,500 this week, and 297,500
for the week last season.
The market tamed tnrtle early in
the day and dropped by degrees nntil
‘January touched 7.37. It dosed only
three points higher. This is a decline
of 83 points from the top level reaohed
two or three weeks ago when this po
sition soared as high as 8 20.
Amerions cotton men do not take a
cheerful view of the situation. If the
warm weather oontinnes on, permit
ting cotton in the field to mature, the
market will go lower still.
There has been no great demand
here for cotton this week and in con
sequence the warehouses still hold the
greater portion of the week’s receipts.
With a steady drop in prices staring
them in the face, the buyers were not
disposed to take hold.
The warehouses here reoeived 452
bales by wagon yesterday.

STORED AWAY A PLENTY HAY.
Sumter’s Sheriff Has Well Filled
Barns.
Sheriff Bell finds a bit of time from
his official duties to do a little farming
on the side, and while he made both
corn and cotton this year he did not
neglect that very important crop—
home raised hay. Sheriff Bell had
ten acres in peavine and crabgrass hay.
He recently harvested this orop, stor
ing away more than twelve tons of fine
hay worth sls to $lB per ton. The
cost of harvesting the hay was nomi
nal, and Sheriff Bell has a good sum
pn the right side of his pocket ledger.

THESE BABIES CARRY TRUNKS,
Smallest Ever Used Will Be Brought
Here Monday.
Probably the smallest practical
tranks ever carried are the property of
the herd of baby elephants that this
season are exhibiting in connection
with Gentry Bros.’ Famous Shows.
The particular pachyderms in question
are the tiniest elephants in all the
world. Tney were imported from In
dia, last winter, by the Gentry Broth
ers. In addition to their superb in
telligence they are endowed with the
best of nature aud enjoy the associa
tion with the children. Their part of
the performance is said to consist of a
remarkable repertoire, seemingly im
possible and difficult acts, which al
most beggar description. The little
elephants and all their merry asso
ciates, who go to make Gentry Bros.’
Famons Shows twice their usual size,
will exhibit in this city, afternoon and
night at Furlow Lawn Monday , 4th.
cAN IMPORTANT OIFFKRENCE.
To make it apparent to thousands,
who think themselves ill, that they are
not afflicted with any disease, but that
the system simply needs cleansing, is

using Syrup of Figs. Manufactured by
the Galifornia Fig Syrup Co, only, and
sold by all druggists.

WARDE ASSURED AN OVATION.
Great Audience Will See Mr. Warde
Tonight.
The appearance of Mr. Frederick
Warde and his splendid company to
night will be the signal for an ovation
upon the part of Americus theatre
goers, who rarelyhave the opportunity
of seeing here such a superb play as
will be presented in “The Mounte
bank. The first presentation of the
play was in 1864, at the Royal Lyceum,
London, with Charles Dillon in the
title role. Its success was so great it
was brought to America and opened at
the Arch Street Theatre, Philadelphia
in March 1866,with Mr. Dillon as “Bel
phegor” and Mr. Stuart Robson as his
assistant, Fanfaronade, the clown.
It has subsequently been presented by
many of the foremost actors of the day,
but noue have made the character of
“Belphegor” so much his own as Mr.
Frederick Warde. It affords him a
splendid opportunity to display his
versatility, as in his portrayal of “Bel
phegor” he runs the gamut of dramat
ic expression with an art equally falla
cious. For this reason Mr. Warde has
made “Belphegor, the Mountebank”
a prominent feature of his repertoire
this season.
A Physician Testifies.

a spirited encounter there in the morn

well-known citizen of Buena Vista,
and a Mr. Smith, an Atlanta attorney,
were the participants. The trouble,
it is said, was the outcome of a lawsuit

knocked down by Mr. Smith and, upon
arising, used his knife upon his op
