HAD ROLL OF BILLS
TOSHOWFOR CROP.
Bamter farmer Shows a Wad of Six
Thousand Dollars.
MANY PLANTERS NOW SELLING.
Fearing the Market May Go Lower,
They Bell at Prevailing Prices
Rather Than Take thelChances—Re
ceipts Continue Large.
With a bank check for six thousand
dollars, which represented the value of
more than two hundred bales of his
ootton, a prosperous Sumter oouuty
planter in Americus yesterday felt
much more at ease than while his bales
remain stored in the warehouse.
He is now better able to stand a fur
ther decline of prioes.
It is greatly to be hoped that there
will be no further fall in prices, but to
be prepared for such contingency
many farmers here sold their ootton
the past week.
For more than two weeks the market
has been steadily deelining, losing a
fall cent per pound from the highest
level reached. Not a few farmers here,
thinking the prioe would go higher, re
fused to sell at 7fo or better, and pre
pared for a long seige.
Seven cents was the full limit paid
in Americus yesterday.
Some are inolined to believe that the
bottom has been reaohed in the long
slump, and that a rally is about due.
Even some of the New York “talent”
talk about 10 cent and 12 cent ootton
before the end of the season. It is to
be hoped they are right.
Iu the meantime the farmers here—
many of them—are taking 6A and 7
cents for theirs right along.

PRFTTY PONIES UPON PARADB.
Monkeys, Dogs and Elephant* In the
Pageant.
The street parade presented by Gen
try Bros.’ Shows this season is twioe
larger than before. It is composed of
nine sections, each one complete in it
self. Numerous kinds of mnsio are
interspersed at intervals in the pa
geant. Nearly every clime is repre
sented by some of its baby animal po
tentates. Fine camels, ferocious mon
keys, dainty ponies, pretty dogs and
sagaoions elephants, make np one sec
tion, which surpasses the parade of
most shows to say nothing of the score
or more of gold bedecked ohariots and
miniature dens. The consolidated
parade of the Gentry Bros.’ Shows is a
sight worth seeing, and the little folks
should not Jbe .denied this privilege.
It will start from the show groands at
10 o’clook Monday morning.

COUNTING ON GREAT CROWDS.
Albany and Monteznma Working For
Shows.
Americas’ two neighbors, Albany
and Montezuma, are working energeti
cally to the end of having a great
crowd eaoh at their respective fall fes
tivals, and each city finds Americus
good territory to work upon. Albany’s
Hay Day and Fall Festival, lasting
one whole week, will be the greatest
of the many successes she has already
scored, and thousands of visitors will
crowd her busy streets for six days.
A multitude of attractions are offered,
and from every portion of southwes
tern Georgia the people are going to
the Albany fair Noy. 18th to 23rd.
Our other enterprising neighbor,
Montezuma, is also oat for a crowd
and will welcome thousands within
her gates to enjoy the attractions of
her carnival. And Americus, with
characteristic generosity, will send a
mnltitnde of visitors to both places.
oAN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE.
To make it apparent to thousands,
who think themselves ill, that they are
not afflicted with any disease, but tbat
the system simply needs cleansing, is
to bring comfort home to their hearts,
as a costive condition is easily cured by
using Syrup ot Figs. Manufactured by
the California Fig Syrup Co, only, and
sold by all druggists.
TWO CAPrUttED BY REVENUES.
Carried to Macon By the Marshall
Yesterday.
The Times-Reoorder a week ago
told of the capture of three moonshine
distilleries in Sumter county, west of
Americus. At that time none of the
parties suspected of any connection
with the moonshine basiness were ar
rested, though this has sines been
done. Deputy marshals came here
yesterday morning and nabbed a white
man and a negro, carrying the pair to
Maoon for trial before the United
States court. It is said that other and
larger stills are being run on full time
oat in that section, making blockade
whiskey by wholesale. If this be true
other arrests will follow as the officers
have ihis information already.

WARDE PLEASED HIS AUDIENCE
Hundreds Here Saw Mountebank Last
Night.
Never has a more appreciative audi
ence been assembled in the Amerions
opera house than that which greeted
the eminent actor, Mr. Frederick
Warde, last evening. Much was ex
pected of this splendid company, pre
senting “The Mountebank” and the
deep interest aroused and applause
given the players evidenced the fact
that all were delighted. The play was
well staged, while the magnificent cos
tumes elicited the greatest admiration
As Belphrego, the Mountebank, Mr.
Warde was perfection personified,
while as much might be said of Miss
Warde, Miss Ashton and Miss Prescott.
The play is full of clean comedy, deep
and delicate pathos and situations of
great intensity. Mr. Warde is seen at
his very best in the role of Belphregor,
and scored a hit last night which will
render his visit to Americas one long
to be remembered.

CANT RISE AS RACE
TO LEVEL Os WHITES,
Gov. Candler Gives His Opinion Upon
the Negro.
EDUCATION IS MOST NEEDED.
That of a Moral Nature, Thinks the
Governor—He Makes Terse Eepl? to
Query Sent Him By the New York
Journal.
Atlanta, Nov. 2—ln reply to a tele
gram from the New York Journal, ask
ing his views on the result of the edu
cation of the negro, and whether the
negro, as a race, could ever be elevated
to the level of the white man. Gov.
Candler replied as follows:
“Rational education benefits any
people of whatever race. What the ne
gro needs most is moral education.
The states in whioh he lives are pro
viding reasonably well for education in
the best books.
“Washington is doing good work for
his race, but he cannot lead them np as
a race to the level of the white man.
The white man is the highest type of
the human family; the negro Is the
lowest. God has made no other race
equal to the Caucasian and education
cannot do that whioh God has failed to
do.
“Individual members of the negro
race will rise to the level of the white
race, but the race as a whole never will.
“The receiving of Washington by the
President, on terms of sooial equality,
will not afifeot the question in aay way.
If sensational newspapers had not made
so much ado about it, nobody would
have thought or oared.any thing about
it,”
