PLANS NEW YEAR’S SURPRISE.
Fresident Charles H. Mackay Will Re
member Old Employes.
New York, Dec. 25.—Clan nee H.
Mat hay, president of the Posu.i Tele
ghaph-Cabie company, is planning a
jiew -year’s suiipru-e tor the oiu-er em
ployes of that concern. ,
it has been reported that John \\.
Mackay leit in his will a provision that
the older employes of the Postal were
to receive a gilt on Jan. 1, 1903, pro
portioned to their term of sc; vice in
that company of ten years o. longer.
I’hough this report regarding the
terms of the will could not be verified
and it was hinted in ether sources of
authority that ti e gift was too idea
of Clarence H. Mackay alone, it was
learned positively from Clarence H.
Mackay that he and a committee com
posed of old fide nds and employe* of
his father were contemplating a new
year’s present for the employes of the
Postal that was of some importance.
Mr. Mackay, who has just returned
to this city ficsm San Francisco in
answer to questions regarding the
form of the intended remembrance,
said:
”YVe have not decided! on that yet.
There will be time enough to talk of
that after the committee meets next
week and fixes on that question."
“It will be in the form of a new
year’s present, will it not
"I can’t say now. It is too soon, as
nothing definite has been fixi ! on. I
will he glad to tell you all about it
when the committee has met and de
cided on the manner of the nc ward to
old employes.”
For seeral days the operators and
older men in the employ of the com
pany have been interested in a myste
rious list of names being prepared in
the local office. Officials went about
quietly and prepared this list, which
contained eighty names. No explana
tion was given to the men who were
spoken, to, though it was noticed the
list was eanefully revised time and
again.
The list when shown to tihe few for
tunate ones in the confidence of the
management was found finally to con
tain eighty name® taken from the op
erating department, including men in
the brokers’ offices. The men were
placed in three classes- —those who had
served in the company for twenty or
more years, those who had been in
continuous service for fifteen years,
and then ten years. No men who had
not been in the service of the com
! pany for at least ten years got on the
list, and it was an unalterable decision
that this service must have been con
tinuous. The committee in charge of
the matter will meet shortly and act
on the list.
