FELL TWELVE STORIES.
While Writing Christmas Letter Man
Meets Tragic End.
Chicago, Dec. 25 —While writing a
letter of Christmas good cheer to his
mother, HaMrison S. Potter, a crippled
young mar from St. Joseph, Mich.,
dropped pen and paper in his room
at the Great Northern hotel in order
to get a breath of fresh air at the
■window. He slipped, fell 12 stories
to the stone pavement below, narrow
ly missed a woman passing the street,
and was picked up dead 1 .
Strangs as it may seem, the young
man In the last few lines of the letter
to his mother said he had met with
an accident, that he felt faint and
would stop writing until he revived
himself at the window. His mother is
Mrs. C. B. Potter, 723 Pearl street, St.
Joseph, Mich.
The ‘sheets of paper, with the ink
still wet, lay on the dregser in the
room when an officer entered it alxnit
5 o’clock to gather facts for a report.
The last lines on the letter were
these:
“I just hit my head such a smash
on the door I will have to lay off writ
ing a minute or so. Makes me dizzy
to look. A hit of fresh air will---
Here the note ended. The last word
was poorly penned. Evidently Potter
had been seized with a fainting spell,
bad struggled to reach the window,
which he was able to push up, and
then had; fallen headlong into the fros
ty air. Hls crutches stood in a cor
ner near the dresser. The police have
learned that Potter had been employed
by the Sun Stove company, of De
troit.

Indianapolis. Dec. 25. —It was re

her little child, and discovered that
a man wearing a mask was plunder

Mrs. Wilson, grasped her revolver,
which lay under her pillow, and re
marked. "What do you want here ”
Instantly she stood to her feet on
the floor, the burglar whirling and
glaring at her, at the same time rais
ing hia mask to get a better view. She
noticed distinctly a gold tooth which
gleamed in the light. She raised her
weapon and began firing, following
the intruder to the porch of her resi

he clamored over the fence.
She is confident she hit him. but
the police were unable to find any
trace of a wounded burglar with a gold
tooth. It is her third experience with
burglars in that quarter, and the sec

advantage.

MISS ROSE OWENS,
No. 720 Seventeenth St.,, WASHINGTON, D. C.
“If every suffering woman
has the same experience with
Wine of Cardui that I had,
your medicine will be most
popular. About a year ago
I began to have a worn out
tired feeling with lassitude,
pains in the back and head
which kept increasing every
month. I felt that I needed
something, but to get the
right medicine was the trou
ble. I finally decided on
your Wine of Cardui and only needed to
take three bottles when I was fully re
covered."
IHEN Miss Rose Owens, who
has a responsible position in
the Government service at
Washington, D. C-, decided to
try Wine of Cardui, she made a wise
choice. Over a million women have
been relieved of female weakness by this
same Wine of Cardui. It is not a
strong medicine but may be taken every
day in the year by any woman with
benefit. It does not force results, but
corrects derangements of the menstrual
organs. It strengthens the nervous
system, gives tone to the bodily func
tions, acts directly on the genital
organs, and is the finest tonic for wo
men known to the science of medicine.

was mustered! out with that rank in
1866. He was the author of "The Abo

. RISKED LIFE TO STOP TRAIN.
Engineer Holds Runaway Back, Sav
ing Many Lives.
Lockport, N. Y., Dec. 25.—With a
seventy-foot fall and death staring
them in the face. Engineer O’Laughlin
and his fireman of engine No. 1,550
stuck to their posts and doubtless
saved many lives.
The engine and caboose, east bound,
were standing 15 rods from the end
of the bridge which spans the gulf
in which the Erie canal lies seventy
feet below. O’Laughldn was waiting
for the tower signal ordering him to
start for the bridge. The Buffalo pas
senger train, west-bound, was at the
middle of the bridge when the signal
came, and O’Laughlin started. •
Just as the engineer pulled the throt
tle he heard a whistle for down brakes
in the rear. A Buffalo “pick-up”
freight with 35 cars came thundering
down from behind at 40 miles an
hour. Engineer Robert Burns appli
ed the brakes, but they failed to re
spond. and! when he reversed the en
gine it slid over the slippery rails
straight for the caboose ahead. He
and Fireman Crapsey jumped.
The freight engine stuck her nose
under the caboose, threw the tender
of No. 1.550 into the ditch, and' the
heavy train behind irresistably shoved
the wreck ahead toward the bridge on
which was the passenger train with its
human freight.
O’Laughlin realized that if the
freight train behind pushed him
into the bridge his crippled engine
and wrecked caboose would be almost
certain to smash the structure and
let the passenger train down into the
canal. He appilied his brakes, re
versed his locomotive and remained
at his post working like a hero to stop
the train.
No. 1,550 brought the mass of oars
behind to a standstill, only two en
gine lengths from the bridge, and with
out doubt saved the passenger train.

Snake on Christmas .Tree.
Pittsburg, W. V&„ Dec. 25.
William Jones went into the coun
try yesterday to get a Christ
mas tree for his family. He brought
back the tree, but with it he brought
a black snake four feet four inches
long and full of ginger, which he had
captured in the woods near the place
where he cut the Christmas tree.
With a split stick over its neck he
brought it to town to prove the truth
of his mid-winter story of black snakes
growing on Christmas trees.
