MARCH IS GOING TO
QUIT IN A STORM.
A Flood of Rain Falls in the
City.
INJURY TO THE GROWING CROP.
Heavy Downpour Here With Wind in
Eastern Portion of State- Small
Crops Are Injured—Watercourses at
Flood Tide.
March, a quitter today, changes now
from its erstwhile calm and peaceful
demeanor and promises to make a bad
weather record in its departure. The
downpour of rain in the early hours
yesterday morning, following the con
tinued rain of Sunday, resulted in
much damage.
For ten or twelve hours the rain fell
with only brief intermission.
While little damage resulted in
the city, beyond the washing of
streets and injury to gardens, much
harm was done in the farming districts
to growing crops.
Fields of young corn, in some locali
ties, were probably submerged, while
injury to cotton fields just planted re -
suited as well. An end is pat to farm
work for several days, already, and if
the rains continue, as threatened yes
terday, little effective work can be done
here this week.
Muckalee creek was running high
yesterday, while the Flint and Chatta
hoochee rivers were brimming with
their yellow tide.
Conditions were worse in the eastern
portions of the state, where a fierce
gale swept the coast country. It is to
be hoped that a cold wave will not fol
follow this season of rain, as such
would certaily bring disaster upon this
entire section.

JUDGE PILSBURY WILL RETIRE
As Commander of Confederate Vet
erans Camp.
After ten years of arduous service as
commander of Camp Sumter, 642 Unit
eel Confederate Veterans, Judge J. B.
Pilsbury states that he will positiyeiy
decline re-election to that honorable
and responsible office at the annual
election to be held April 7th.
This announcement will, no doubt,
be received with regret among the old
soldiers of Sumter,
Since he has held the office of capp
commander Judge Pilsbury has been
untiring in his efforts to promote i s
interests and good fellowship, with
what sneoess the large membership of
that organization clearly attests.
Judge Pilsbury gives notice of the
next meeting of the camp, and of his
intentions, * ia the following card,
handed the Times-Recorder yesterday.
Headquarters Camp Sumter No. 642,
