Cotton Letter.
Anoericnp, Ga , Jan. 16. Sober,
steady, quiet strength has been the
keynote today. Nothing sensational
happened, bat underlying all was an
excellent demand for spot cotton which
was met with an advance of one-eighth
by willing selling of a certain limited
amount of spot ootton which had accu
mnlated on factors’ hands at the ports,
especially at New Orleans.
In the interior prioes were higher
than at the ports, so it is natural for
buyers to tarn to the latter New Or
leans is said to bave sold 6,000 bales.
The enpply of ootton for sale at the
new level of prices is not large and will
be absorbed. I‘. is not likely that spot
demand will stop here. From all ao
counts there are large engagements for
January shipment and there are sinis
ter rnmors regarding the possible ina
bility cf interior spot dealers to keep
their engagements with exporters.
With farmers holding almost as a
unit, they are experiencing great dif
ficulty in getting any ootton whatever,
and what they do secure is at ruinous
prices, far above a parity with the
ports.
Under each ciroumstanoes sem? will
default while others will turn to the
cheaper ports and get their require
ments there. It can be readily under
stood what a bullish situation will be
created when the markets are stirred
up by an urgent demand regardless of
price, for when a defaulted contract
has to be refilled price is no object.
Sentiment abroad has been shifting
toward the ball side, not so much be
cause of belief in a sma’ler crop than
heretofore prevailed as becau-e of a
realizing of a danger of a short supply
for the coming season,
All markets closed at the top, with
our prioes 15 points above yesterday.
The re-establishment of Maroh and
