COURT IS GOING TO
BE BUSY ALL WEEK.
Calling of Special Session
Here.
MURDER CASES ON THE DOCKET
After Convening Special Term Judge
Littlejohn is Petitioned Not to Hold
Court—Jonas Hicks Case Will Be
Among the First Tried.
The first special term of Snmter su
perior court convened in many years
will be entered upon tomorrow morn
ing when Judge ’/. A. Littlejohn, at
the instance of four or five hundred cit
zens, will preside for a week iu the
trial of many onmiual oases.
And among these will be the case of
Jonas Hicks, the negro who killed Mr.
Jarrett J. Davis on his plantation be
low Amerious two months ago, which
will be among the first taken up.
In fact, tne Hicks case is largely re
sponsible for the speoial term, and the
situation is interesting.
Shortly after the crime was commit
ted a lengthy petition was presented
the court praying for a special term for
trial of the negro. As there were three
other murder cases, and otber’felonies
to be tried, Judge Littlejohn decided
to accede to the reqiest made.
Even this involved an expense of
probab'y SI,OOO, but the session was
called, and all is in readiness. Yester
day, however, an unexpected phase was
developed m a counter petition presen
ted to the court.
Tniß was upon the part of several
farmers, some of whom had signed'he
petition for a speoial term but who
now regret it, inasmuch as a sess : on of
court will deter work on the farm. This
counter petition was argued before the
court yeßterdsy.
But it was too late to undo what had
already been done in this way.
Judge Littlejohn explained the situ
ation fully to the delegation before
him, reciting the faot that, while the
speoial term had been oalled at their
request largely, he could not discrum
nate and try Hicks alone, when there
were other murder oases upon the
dooket.
He would, be said,inconvenience the
farmers just as little as possible and
try only j til oases of grave nature. The
special term bad bees called, and it
was too late now to turn baok
Judge Littlejohn appointed able
counsel to defend Hickp, assigning
Messrs Lane & Maynard and Judge J.
A. Hixon to that task. The grand jury
will assemble at 9 o’clock, and daring
the week will pass npon a number of
cases, including that of Jonas Hicks.
The trial of many jail cases this
week will greatly relieve the dooket at
the regular May term of coart.

To treat Dandruff, and Palling Hair,

You must kill the Dandruff Germ.
