BOARD HAS TALK ON
MATTER OF ROADS.
Subjects of Interest Were
Discussed.
A MILITARY ROAD TO ANDERSON
If Among tho Many Matters to Bo
Taken By The Board of Trade.
Advertising Amerlcus is Likewise
to Be Pushed Forward,
The recent meeting of the Board of
Trade of Americas was well attended,
the rather large nomber of active mem
bers present evidencing the degree of
interest felt in the snooess of this or
ganization and the work it has under
taken in behalf of Americas.
Mr. L. G. Council, president of the
board, presided at the session.
Reports of committees, to which bad
been referred matters for investigation,
were received and discussed at length
and many valuable suggestions were
thereby obtained.
After the regular routine had b«.en
disposed of the board went into an in
formal discussion of matters of vital
interest to the city and eeotioD; the
bniiding of roads; the advertising of
Americas abroad, and many other sub
jeats as well.
And under this head came that long
discnesed military highway, connect
ing Americas and the NaHooal Ceme
tery at Andersonville,
Citizens of Ameriooß have long de
sired the bniiding rs each a road by
the Government, making accessible
that plaoe of great interest and resort,
and the Board at this meeting evidenc
ed a determination to push it to a sno
cessful end.
Congressman K. B. Lewis has al
ready pressed the matter before the
War Department, and in his efforts to
secure the necessary appropriation has
the hearty co-operation of the G. A,
R. officials and congressmen from
Pennsylvania working with him.
The Board of Trade is anxious to see
an early consummation of this plan, as
snoh a highway would prove of incal
culable advantage to Americas, and to
the country traversed.
The subject was referred to commit
tee for investigation and report
The Board is still deeply interested
in the bniiding of the proposed link of
eighteen or twenty miles, connecting
Americas with that splendid highway
between the Alabama coal fields and
the ccean—the Atlantic and Birming
ham Railway.
It is greatly to be hoped that thi,
matter will assume tangible sbape at
an early date.
The faot is realized that Americas
has never been presented a finer op
portnnity to secure a great railway
at snob minor cost. Besides the possi
bility of getting division shops here,
it would give the city lower freight
rates to competitive points.
This matter, as others discussed,
will have the hearty cooperation of the
Board of Trade.

NUMEROUS BILLS ARE RETURNED
Grand Jury for Special Term of Court
Completed its Work Wednesday
and Adjourned, Court May Come
to a Close Today as Wei'.
After a rather bui-y session of nearly
three days the grand jury serving at
the special term of Sumter Superior
Court completed all business yesterday
afternoon and adjourned with the
thanks of Judge Littlejohn. This
grand jury made no presentments.
Such matters as would have oome
under that head will be considered by
the grand jury serving at the regular
term three weeks hence, when court
will eoLvene for a longer session,.
Numerous indictments were returned
by the special grand jury.
Three important murder oases among
negroes were investigated and indict
ments returned therein. One of these,
the oase of Jonas Hicks, was investi
gated Monday morning. Tuesday morn
ing the negro was tried, and the death
eeatenoe imposed.
There was no needless delay in me
ting out justice to this murderer.
I*, is reported that the grand jury
trained its guns upon "the bottom” a
well known locality here, and several
of the denizens there will answer later
to the indiotments returned.
The time of the court yesterday was
taken up in the trial of another negro
killing affair, among the last to be
tried at the special term. It is quite
probable that Judge Littlejohn will
order an adjournment of the special
session today.
As the result of this term of four
days the number of felony cases upon
the docket have been red need and the
oounty jail relieved of a number of
its blaok occupants.
Sciatica Cured After Twenty Years
of Torture.
For more than 20 years Mr. J. B.
Massey, of 3322 Clinton St,. Minnea
polis, Minn., was tortured by soiatica.
The pain and suffering which he en
dured during this time is beyond com
prehension. Nothing gave him any
permanent relief until be used Chamber
lain’s Pain Balm. One application of
that liiiimout relieved the pain and
made sleep aod rest possible, and less
than one bottle has effected a permanent
cure. Mr. Massey relates his experience
for the benefit of others who may be
similarly Bffiicted. If trouble with sciatica
or rheumatism why not try a 25 oent
bottle of Pain Balm and see for your
self how quickly it relieves the pain.

While no case of sunstroke was re
