For Third Time Fire Visits Bus

LOSS IS ESTIMATED AT $300,000
Although the Entire Fire Department
Was on the Scene, They Had Not
Checked the Blaze at 1:30 O’clock
Saturday Morning.
Knoxville, May s.—Another disas
trous fire, entailing a loss estimated
at about $300,000, occurred in the
wholesale section of Gay street early
Saturday morning. The candy fac
tory and wholesale confection estab
lishment of the Littlefield & Steere
company was completely destroyed,
causing a loss of about $15,000 on the
building and about $75,000 on its con
tours.
The two upper floors of the McMil
lan, Hazen & Co., wholesale shoes, was
totally gutted, and the three floors and
contents were damaged by water; loss
on building and contents about $175,-
000.
The Hambright Skirt and Pants fac
tory adjoining the shoe house, was
damaged by smoke and water to the
extent of about $30,000.
The fire originated in the basement
of the candy factory, and that build
ing was quickly consumed. The five
story Commerce building, in which the
three establishments were located, is
one of the largest and most modern
structures in the business section.
HALF OF TRAIN RAN OVER CHILD
But the Little One Miraculously Es
caped Death.
Greenville, S. C„ May s.—The es
cape of the 2-year-old child of D. B.
Nelson, living near Fountain Inn, 20
miles from Greenville, on the Charles
ton and Western Carolina road, from
a horrible death, was miraculous.
The engineer did not see the small
form on the track until it was too late
to stop his train. The pilot struck
the child and knocked it down be
tween the crossties and the engine,
tender and half the train passed over
the body before being stopped.
The child was taken from under the
train and was unconscious but slight
ly bruised, and it soon recovered con
sciousness. The engine was detached
from the train and the child was
placed on it and hurried back to Foun
tain Inn for medical attention. Physi
cians found that the injuries sustain
ed were not serious.

Miners Will Later Seek to Obtain,
Through Concilation Board the Bet
tering of Conditions Which Are
Working Hardships Upon Them.
Scranton, Pa., May 5. —There will be
no strike of the anthracite miners.
That Is now a settled conclusion,
for such Is the advice of President
John Mitchell and National Secre
tary-Treasurer Wilson and others of
the leaders who Saturday addressed
the convention of the miners before
the report of the scale committee was
presented. Their, addi’essea fully
forcasted the report which the com
mittee would make.
The suspension order will be raised
and the miners will go back to work
on the terms of the award of the an
thracite strike commission of 1903,
which the operators were willing to
have continued, and will later seek
to obtain through the conciliation
board, or by arbitration the bettering
of conditions which they complain are
working hardships on them.
The report of the scale committee
recommending the return of the min
ers to work under the anthracite com
mission’s award was adopted by the
convention after 55 minutes’ discus
sion. The convention adjourned un
til Tuesday to give the scale commit
tee time to confer with the operators.
Banks Approve of Plan.
New York, May s.—Many of the
banks and trust companies of this city
have, says a morning newspaper, ap
proved a plan devised by Vice Presi
dent Horace M. Kllborn, of the Na
tional City bank, to prevent robberies
of the sort perpetrated by Harry’ Leon
ard, who said afterward that he sim
ply wanted to show -the City Bank how
very easy he could rob it, got his
money through forging the name “of
another firm to a fictitious check pur
porting to be in the form of a loan.
This plan, bankers think, will frus
trate anything of the kind in the fu
ture.
Speer to Lunch with President.
Macon, Ga., May 5- —Judge Emory
Speer will lunch with President Roose
velt at the White House next Friday
on his way to Yale, where he goes to
deliver a series of'lectures to the Yale
Law School. He will stop over in
Washington *.t the invitation of the
president, having received a request
Friday morning to take lunch with the
president. Judge Speer enjoys a
friendship with President Roosevelt
probably more intimate than that of
all the other southern jurists, and his
short visit will be one of pleasure to
both himself and the president.
Abhor Meat and Bar Osier Theory.
Atlanta, Majt 5. —A new religious
sect, which among other tenets pro
fesses an abhorence of meat, and be
lieve that a man may live to be 150
years old with the proper care of him
self, will locate In Atlanta. Rev.
Harry G. Walker, of Milwaukee, Wis.,
has been in Aitlanta recently investi
gating certain resorts near town with
a view of purchasing a place for his
sect to make its quarters. It appears
that the sect styles Itself the Convert*
srs. They are about 400 people In
sais new band of religious enthusiasts.
Suicided With Carbolic Acid.
Cincinnati, May 5. —Using a straw
to prevent disfiguring her face, Mrs.
Emma Reybert, wife of a printer, In
the solemn quietude of St. Philome
nas church, committed suicide with
carbolic acid. She died a few min
utes after being found, but her iden
tity was not established for some
time. Despondency because of pool
health Is believed to have been the
cause of the act.
Agricultural Laborers Strike.
Washington, May 5. —The executive
council of the American Federation ol
Labor has given its endorsement to a
strike among 3,000 agricultural labor
ers in the Arecibo district, Porto Rico.
The laborers are contending for an
increase of wages which it is felt by
the executive council should be grant
ed. The men on strike are engaged
primarily in the sugar industry.
“Turnpike King” Dead.
Louisville, Ky., May 5. — A special
from Maysville, Ky., says that W. W.
Baldwin, widely know'n throughout
Ohio, Kentcky and Tennessee, as
the “turnpike king,” died at his home
there Saturday. Years ago h% was
the object of much persecution by the
turnpike raiders in his neighborhood.
Banks Will Consolidate.
Nashville, May 5.—A Montgomery,
Ala., dispatch says that the Merchants
and Planters’ Farley National and the
First National banks of that city, are
to consolidate-with a capital of $1,000,-
000. A. M. Baldwin will be president
of the consolidated banks.
Would Reinstate Midshipmen.
Washington, May 5. —Senator Hafe
has introduced a bill authorizing the
reappointment to the naval academy
of three midshipmen recently dismiss
ed for hazing. They are Worth W.
Foster, George 11. Melvin and Richard
L. deSaussure.
Wihdraws from Gubernatorial Race.
Nashville, May 5. —A RockwootL

says that Asbury Wright, of that place,,
has withdrawn from race for the Ro
publican gubernatorial nomination.

No Lives Were Lost, So Far as
Known, But In Several Places
Damage to Growing Crops, Especial
ly Cantaloupes, Was Very Large.
Cordele, Ga., May 5. —A fierce
rain and wind storm struck Cordele
between 4 and 5 o’clock Friday after
noon, doing great damage.
It is impossible to learn all the
damage done, but among the reported
damages are the Cash Drug Store, L.
J. Brush, dry goods; C. C. Cutt’s of
fice; all badly damaged by water, the
roof having been partially blown off
the building. Wilkes’ Dry Goods Co.
and the Cordele Leather company,
damaged by water. Many other small
er damages are reported by the mer
chants. The large brick negro Baptist
church is said to have been unroofed,
and several small houses on the out
skirts of the city were either blown
down or lifted off their foundations.
A great deal ol damage was done
to the Southern Bell Telephone and
the Western Union Telegraph compa
nies. It is expected that much dam
age was done in the country. The
negro Rabbit Foot Comedy company’s
big tent, which had just been stretch
ed for a performance, was blown flat
on the ground. No one was killed or
hurt. i
The storm came from the northwest,
and was blowing from 50 to CO miles
an hour.
Storm Near Albany.
Albany, Ga., May 5. —Reports com
ing in from the section of country
north of Albany say that section was
visited Friday evening between 4 and
5 o’clock with a terrific wind and hail
storm, laying waste to every green
thing in its path.
The large farms of W. H. Newsom
and son, A. J. Fleetwood, J. R. For
rester, Morris Weslosky, and on into
Lee county, have been completely ruin,
ed. The hail is reported to be ol
enormous size and quantity. The
large cantaloupe crops of W. H. New
son and Son, Morris Weslosky and
others, comprising hundreds of acres,
are a total loss. These parties have
their fertilizer in the ground and have
wired for more seed to replant with.
Owing to the late hour and the
breaking of telephone wires, it is im
possible to report the full extent ol
the damage or the scope of the devas
tation accurately.
Hailstones Injure Crops.
Dawson, Ga., May s.—There was
a very heavy rainfall, some hail and
much lightning here Friday afternoon.
The telephone exchange received an
electric bolt which damaged a number
of 'phones and toll lines. Growing
crops 3 miles below Dawson were se
riously injured by the hailstones.
Storm Near Meridian,
Meridian, Miss., May 5. —Violent
rain, wind, hail and thunder storms
passed over this section Friday after
noon. No material damage was done
in Meridian, but reports from Obediah
say that great damage was done by the
Immense hailstones to the young cot
ton. A rumor that cannot be con
firmed, states that Boligee, 20 miles
to the northwest of this place, has
been entirely demolished.
Murder and Suicide.
Decatur, Ala., May 5.—A case ol
■wife-murder and suicide caused by the
wife having lost her mind, took place
near Hartselle, this county, Friday. W.
I. Entriken, a prominent farmer, shot
his wife, and then killed himself af
ter a night of worry over his wife’s
condition. The dead bodies were dis
covered lying on th© floor and by the
old man’s side was a revolver with
two chambers empty. Each was nearly
70 years of age.

Higgins Signs Armstrong Bill.
Albany, N. Y., May 5. —Governor
Higgins has signed the bill of Senator
’Armstrong, which postpones from No
vember 15 to December 18 the next
election of the board of directors of
the Mutual Life Insurance companies
of this state. The law also postpones
from June_to Judy the date of filing
lists of policy holders by the dates
prlglnally set.
No Foundation for Rumor.
Havana, May 6.—The Associated
Press is in a position to state that
there Is absolutely no foundation in
fact for the statement that there Is a
revolutionary movement on foot In the
eastern end of the Island of Cuba or
elsewhere.
Ward Entertained at Shanghai.
Shanghai, May 5. —George G. Ward,
of New York, vice president of the
Commercial Pacific Cable company,
who arrived here recently to supervise
the completion of the Manila-Shanghai
link, was entertained by the American
associations of China at a banquet at
which several distinguished Chinese
who were among those present heart
ily welcomed the new cable connec
i tion with the United States.

Four Men Fatally Shot.
Birmingham, Ala., May 5. —.''s the
result of a general shooting affair
shortly before 7 o’clock Friday night,
in the Peerless saloon, Thomas G.
Hewlett is dead, John T. Shugart is
expected to die any moment, Frank
Lee is short through the knuckle and
Leonard Potts is shot through the an
kle. The fatal shooting was done by
Harry Haynes, who claims that Hew
lett first opened fire on him, and that
Shugart immediately took up Hew
left’s fight and that he had to shoot
them both. The other two men were
bystanders.
Pardon To Be Asked For.
Spartanburg, S. 0., May 5. —A peti
tion is being circulated asking that
Jesse Bush, who shot and killed Jas.
Israel, be pardoned. The petition
will be presented to the hoard of par
dons at its next meeting. The paper
is being generally signed. Bush kill
ed the man who it was said was the
father of a child born to his 14-year
old daughter, and for which crime he
was tried and given a sentence of two
years in the penitentiary.
Ten Are Killed in Wreck.
Altoona, Pa., May 5. —Ten persons
are dead as the result of the head-on
collision on the Pennsylvania railroad
near Clover Creek Junction Friday
night. Six were killed outright and
four died from injuries received. About
twenty of the passengers and train
crew were more or less seriously in
jured, but as far as is known all will
recover.
Resolve to Defer Agitation.
Odessa, May 5. —The Jewish politi
cal association of Southwestern Rus
sia have unanimo\ly resolved to de
fer any parliamentary agitation for
equality in civil and political rights un
til the session of parliament in the
year 1907.
Crew Arrives at Plymouth.
Plymouth, England, May 5. —The
crew of the wrecked steamer Anglo-
Peruvian numbering 38 men were
landed here Friday by the Mohawk.
