GREAT OCCASION IN WEBSTER
Thousand* Attend the Morster Cue
Friday.
Friday was Webster county’s day of
days, an ccoasion loDg antic’pated with
keenest pleasure by her good people
and th‘. lr hosts of friends across the
border?, and never was su -h event en
joyed in fuller degree by the thousands
there assembled.
Webster had prepared for a mighty
host, nor was she disappointed in the
nuuber cf her gnests.
With her own good people came
many from Sumter, Lee, Stewart and
probably other counties, and when all
had assembled the multitude was esti
mated at fully 3,C00.
The occasion was in the nature of a
great county reunion of friends and
not a political barbecue, as erroneous"
lysnppoEed. Some of the politicians
were present, but they refrained from
makmg speeches and mingled hand-
with the orowd.
Hon E. B. Lewis and Hod, D. M.
Hnghts were prominent among those
attending, though probably thinking
more of cne than of congress
When dinner was announced the
spread was one calculated to charm
an epicure. Twenty barbecned pigs
formed the piece de resistance, to say
nothing of enormous quantities of
chicken pies, fried chicken and a loDg
list of other good things.
Webster county has arranged many
big barbecues in years past but noth
iog that oonld near approach the royal
feast yesterday.
HEALTHY PLANTS

■Well as Good Soil.
Did you ever see a rosebush which—

CITIZENS WANT BUILDING SITE
Many Other Names are Added to
Petition.
That the people of Americus are
praotically united in the deeire to have
the new Government building erected
unon the former hotel park property is
evidenced by the addition of scores of
other m mes to the hundreds who al
ready have petitioned the Treasury
Department to locate it there. MaDy
names of merchants, firms and corpo
rations were added yesterday, repre
senting houses on Cotton avenue, La
mar and Forsyth Btreete. Probably 400
or 500 names are now attached to the
petition. The Government has invited
proposals for eitesfrom any parties de
siring to sell, and all bids will be
opened on August 22ad. It will not be
long after that date ere the question of
location is determined and something
done in a building way.
There is more Catanh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years were supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors pro
nounced it a local disease and prescribed
local remedies, and by constantly fail
ing to cure with local treatment pro
nounced it incurable. Science has proven
catairh to be a' constitutional disease
and therefore requires constitutional
treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manu

the market. It is taken internally in

Farmers in Americus yesterday re

REAL ESTATE BOOM GENERAL
Americus is Still Keeping Pres With
Other Cities.
There is no “boom” in Americas real
estate or fiotitions values, tbe rapid
enhancement in values here in recent
years being upon a firm and healthy
baßlp, Activity in real estate seems to
be confined to no particular section of
the country. Nearly every Southern
city is having a real estate boom, and
the same is true of other sections. The
trouble about reel estate booms is that
they too often ran away with them
selves. More than one Southern city
had a disastrous experience daring the
boom days of tbe eighties. It is to be
hoped that there will be no repetition
of that experieics. We do not believe
there will be. There ate more people
seeking homes now than there were
thee; there is a more genuine and le
gitimate demand, and more substantial
reasons for expecting real expansion
and permanent growth. But there is
always the danger of overdoing the
thing to be guarded against. There
can be no growth of a city by hothouse
methodp, and when the legitimate is
exoeededreaotion inevitably follows.

CHARRED BODIES OF CHILDREN
Removed from Ashes aud Carried to
Savannah.
Mr. Neon Buchanan retnrned to
Americas yesterday from Fort Valley,
where he accompanied Mrs. Bnohanan
the day before, the burning of her par
ents’ home, together with the crema
tion of two grandchildren of Mr. and
Mrs. W, G. Jordan, haying called
them there.
It was a most heart rending ecene;
the burned home and the charred
bodies of the children.
Mr, and Mrs, R. W. Wimbish of
Savannah, parents of thedead childrer,
arrived in Fort Valley yesterday to
oonvey home the remains of their loved
ones, who left them only the day be
fore.
Mies Annie May Wimbish was six
teen years age, and just graduated
from the Savannah public schools. Her
little brother, Robert, was eight. They
oame from Savannah Tuesday to visit
their errand parents. Mr. and Mrs, Jor
dan, at Fort Valley.
Within twenty-four hours they had
been burned to death.
The young girl and her brother oc
cupied a room next to their grandpar
ents. The home burned so rapidly
that escape for them was impossible,
It is said their young faces were seen
several times at the window while the
dimes leaped all around them.
Mrs. Jordan was cirrud from the
burning building, nearly suffocated,
while Mr. Jordan barely escaped as
wail. Tue fire occurred early in the
nigh‘, about 10 o’clock, and while
every cflbrt was made by the firemen
to check the flames it was really to no
purpose.
The origin of the fire is still a mys
tery, and may have been the result of a
s'roke of Jghtning.

THE 1905 BALE CAME IN JULY
Americus Received Her First One on
July 31st,
Mr. Cliff Clay, one of South Geor
gia’s moet successful young planters,
waR in the city yesterday and corrected
a statement made recently by the
Times Recorder relative to the first
bale of last yeai’d crop reoeived here.
The statement made recently was to
the cffect’that the first bal9 arrived
August 10th, when in reality it was on
July 31st. The first bile cf the 1904
crop came early in August, hence the
mistake. Oa account of the recent
continued rains, which hss delayed the
maturing of the crop, Americus will
soaroely reoeive a July ba’a this season
as last year.

Mr, W. H. Effes is again at my shop;

AMERICUS WILL AID MOVEMENT
To Erect a Shaft to Women of the
South.
The Times Recorder’s editorial yes
terdav relative to the movement upon
the part of the South to erect a mono
ment to the brave women of the Con
federacy, strikes a popular cord among
citizens of Americus, and many here
will gladly give to the proposed fund.
Nowhere in the South is the patriotism
and bravery cf the women of the Con
federacy better known than right here
in Americus, especially by those who
can remember well the trving days of
the cruel civil war, and the sons and
daughters cf these patriotic women
will glad’y aid in building them an en

subscriptions will be asked here to add
toth6 large fund already being raised
by the United Confederate Veterans of
the South and the U. D. C, for this
most laudable purpose.

Modest Claims Often Carry the Most
Conviction.
Whem Maxim, the famous gun in
ventor, placed his gun before'a com
mittee of judges, he stated its carrying
power to be much below what he felt
sure the gun would accomplish, The
result of the trial was therefore a great
surprise, instead of disappointment. It
is the same with the manufacturers ot
Chamberlain’s Colic, Colera and
uiarrhoea Remedy. They do not public
ly boast cf all this remedy will accom
plish, tut prefertto let the user make
the statements. What they do claim is
that it will positively cure diarrhoea,
dysentery, pains in the stomach and
bowels and has never been known to
fail. For sale by Eldridge Drug Co.

IT DROPS TO THE DIME POINT
Further Flunk Follows the Cotton
Market.
The threatened eruption of Mount
Aetna on the island of Sicily or some
thing equally as potent, put the cotton
market to the bad yesterday. July
dropped ten points down to the even
dime notch, the lowest record made in
some time, while January cotton
declined from 10.4 G to 10.41, re covet
ing a little at the oloee. The ‘Uiear”
element in the north, who make the
prices, insist that the recent floods
helped the cotton crop and completely
drowned ont the grass, hence the
eel ine in values.
