Friday, December 21. 1906 ADIEU TO BOOKS IS GOING TO BE SAID Vacation For City Schools’ Begins 1 exercises to suspend today I Ch istmas Holidays Begin at Noon and Will Extend Into New Year —Exer- cises at the Schools Today«W II be of Interest. .Santa will ring out the glad season of * holiday in the Americus public schools j today, and the teeming hundreds of pupils, happy in anticipation of the season, will east books and dull care aside to revel tn the joys of the Xmas vacation. Two weeks of solid enjoyment thus awaits the pupilistic host. For the holiday period will extend through the Christmas and New Year alike, the session resuming January 2nd. Thus, there are two whole weeks of supreme rest ahead now. In several of the departments of Furlow and Kees I’ark Schools the closing today will be marked by pret ty and appropriate exercises. Some of the rooms will be decorated to an ex tent, and throughout the building a holiday air will prevail. Other pupils —those now attending colleges and universities —will come home today as well, not a few having arrived yesterday. And in hundreds of happy Americus homes these light hearted lads and lassies will bring supreme joy today. And may it be a season of unalloyed pleasure lor all. The picture will be turned soon enough. A KINDERGARTEN IN AMERICUS Movement to Establish One Perma * nently Here. There is a well defined movement on foot looking to the establishment of a public kindergarten in Americus, where children yet too young to enter the city public schools may attend. That there is need for such a school no one denies. Some contend that the kindergarten trained child is all at sea in regard to school duties, when it enters the regu lar school, and is hard to control. If such is the ease, the fault must lie in the school and not in the kindergarten, for the kindergarten aims from the first io make the child not merely submis sive and responsive but suggestive, inventive and creative. Visit the pri vate kindergarten of Miss Brahan and see the happy faces of teachers and pu pils. See how she kindles in their lit tle souls a light, which time will never cause to grow dim, but will shine forth in after years to Ido reflected by souls less fortunate. Let the mothers ot Americus visit the kindergarten, study the system, and work for a free kinder garten. If we cannot have it in con nection with our city schools, let 11s have it anyway and right now. Throughout the Southland, people are awaking not only to their importance, but necessity. Columbus has one of the best in connection with the city system, and today could not be induced to dispense with it, so successful has it become and so necessary. Americus can do as well.
