When enemies flatter,guard your

Hairy Thaw is sane. The
public- is nearly insane.
God made the coal: artificial
laws made the coal baron.
Clothes may not make the woman
but they have much to do with the
state of her mind.
Sunday schools niav sometimes
be described as ignorance leading
the blind.
Personal preferment rather than
patriotic principle is the guiding
star of modern politics.
Heredity is the cloak that cov
ers many sins: an accepted excuse
for man's acquired depravity.
They have a new .joke in staid
old Savannah. They say the new
chief of police is too Anstentatious.
The Macon News is grateful that
the gubernatorial candidates in
Georgia paid their own expenses.
‘‘The ancients did not kiss.”
No wonder they have disappeared.
Life wasn’t worth living for them.
If •'rovidenee did not make the
rainfall on the just and the unjust
alike the. just would probably get
none.
A “professor” says that *■ woman
discovered the kiss." You can
always rely on woman to discover
a good thing.
Dignity is the characteristic of a
gentleman.says ex-Governor Odell
in a pen picture that holds Eoo*e
velt up to scorn.
Odell say the voice of the re
former is a burden in the land.
The trouble is that so many of the
reformers need reforming them
selves.
There is enough water in Ameri
can stocks to irrigate the great
western desert. Merely another in
stance of improper distribution of
natural supplies.
Judge Parker still thinks there
should be an investigation of the
books of the republican national
committee. The Judge will never
live to see the day.
Two federal judges have decided
for and two against the employers’
liability act. Nothing is law in
tills country, apparently, until the
Supreme Court says so.
It is not until some people get
married that we find how illustrious
their ancestors were and how
many distinguished relatives they
now have somewhere else.
The daughter of the American
ambassador is said to be debating
whether to marry into the English
nobility. What did papa take the
ambassadorship for if not for that?
“The women of our land dress
too much. even the children are
overdressed” says a commentator
on American life. This accounts
for the worried look that papa
wears.
The New York Herald says the
crusades against Mrs. Eddv aud
Christian Science have only
succeeded in lending strength to
it. Persecution has always knitt
ed a church together and won
adherents for it.
A strong effort is making to
unite all the Protestants of Scot
land in one church body. Pity
some suck movement cannot
-succeed in this country. It would
save untold millions of dollars and
result in a vastly more efficient
churcT work.
SAVING BANKS IN AMERICUS,
i
Americas banks are educating
the people of this city up to the
saving habit as rapidly as the%
can. Paying four per cent, interest
on deposits of this natnre. and
continually impressing on the
public the advisability of saving
something every month, no matter
how small the amount, is having
its effect, and it is probable that
the number of depositors will be
greatly increased with each year
and the volume of popular savings
be largely augmented.
The saving habit is a good one
to have. It is not necessity to e
miserly or penurious to save All
that is required is a little self con
trol. the practice of the habit ot
self denial applied to unnecessary
extravagances. Soon there comes
the sense of independence, the
proud satisfaction of knowing that
one is not dependent absolutely on
other*, that resnlts front a pass
book with a few hundred dollars
entered in it to one's credit.
Hank can be. and are. a great
factor in stimulating the saving
habit in a community. B\ their
advertisments they get people to
thinking,and ouce men and woman
begin to think about saving they
are very apt to begin to practice it,
to their own benefit and the benefit
of the community.
The movement in Americus in
recent mouths in this direction is
one that is worthy of all commen
dation. A city that is full ot
depositors, with hundreds aud
thousands “of men. women' and
children realizing the importance
of saving as a means to futnie
business operations, or future pro
tection from want, is a city that is
not apt to be troubled with the
care of many paupers or distressed.
Parents might do well to encourage
their children to acquire the sav
ing habit by starting little accounts
for them. ‘lt will tend to learn
them what the bulk of American
children sadly need to learn, the
value of money.
A ROOSEVELTIAN BUFF.
Just when the country had start
ed up in surprise at the further
revelations of Rooseyelt’s knowl
edge of the corrupt practices of
his party in New York state in the
last national election,and begun to
realize from the Harriman corres
pondence that the president not
only was not averse to, but was
fully aware of, the raising of a
tremendous corruption fund, a
determined effort is made by the
president to direct public attention
in another direction by the cry of
“conspiracy" against him and his
policies.
The stories set afloat from the
White House must be received
with much incredulity. They do
not tear the stamp of truthfulness
upon their face. Some one, whose
Dame is not divulged, according
to the administration story.reveal,
ed to the president the details of a
plot of of the great
combinations of capital, laid at a
small dinner party, to defeat the
Rooseveltian policy in so far as it
relates to the curbing of trusts and
the regulation of railroads.
No names are given, and no
other definite information, but a
vagne inference is allowed to
circulate that it was a Harriman-
Rockefeller gathering, with pro
minent anti-Roosevelt politicians
m the baek ground.
Altogether the story looks too
nebulous to be worthy of much
consideration. It is beTig served
np with great headlines, and the
people are being called on to rally
around the president and defeat
the wicked machinations of these
powerful but unknown enemies.
Bat looking at it calmly, it must
seen to the world like a poor piece
of subterfuge intended to divert
attention from the damaging posi
tion in which waa put
by the Harriman correspondence.
It ii probably a mere cry of ‘ stop
thief to turn the public e.,e from
the culprit in the White House.
