ROCK THROWER FINED PROPERLY
Chunk of a Negro Pays Fiver for
Rock Chunk.
Kd Frederick was touched for a live
iu police court yesterday for indulging
m the usual coonetical pastime of rock
throwing—a sport dear to any negro.
Frederick came near smashing the
handsome display window of the Ry
lander Shoe Co. in throwing a rock at
another batch of midnight, and got off
very light with a five dollar fine. Six
ty days on the gang would have served
better.

“CUT IT OUT.”
Three Little Words That Are Pregnant With
Meaning.
In the tendency to decry the use of
slang the fact is sometimes lost sight
of that popular phrases are oftentimes
made up of the purest and simplest
English and express a great truth
or convey a much needed lesson iu
the most succinct fashion. It is this
very fact that endears them to the
public and puts them in vogue. They
meet a want and in that their popu
larity lids its basis.
Take the expression so often heard
in recent years, ‘“Cut it out.” What
a volume- of meaning it really con
veys to even the untutored mind.
Pregnant with significance, it takes
the place of a long dissertation when
aptly applied. There is more virility
in it, when used at the opportune
moment, than there would be in the
most carefully prepared sermon.
“Cut it out.”
What a wealth of meaning it really
embodies.
Take the case of the young man
who starts a vulgar story and is
halted with that sharp command. He
needs no further reminder of the fact
that the polluting talk is distasteful to
his auditors and disgraceful to him
self.
Or consider the young man who is
bent apparently on acquiring a vi
cious habit, a habit that may lead to
his financial and moral ruin, and who
is halted with the advice to “cut it
out.”
That trinity of little words conveys
a warning that he may well hesitate
to thrust aside.
To “cut it out” means to him the
difference between success and pitia
ble failure in life, between honor and
dishonor.
That bftef sentence, “Take my ad
vice young man, and cut it out,” may
open his eyes to the danger ahead, to

“Cut it out.”
Was there ever better advice given
with regard to many things?
Do you use foul language?
’ Cut it out.
Are you inclined to tell tales of a
double nature?
Cut it out.
Are you beginning to drink intoxi
cants. just to be sociable?
Cut it out.
Have you begun to speculate, with
vague dreams of quick wealth?
Cut it out.
Have you started a scale of living
that means expenditures in excess of
income?
Cut it, out.
Have you begun to feel sceptical as
to religion, and to think that it is
more manly to scoff at holy things?
Cut it out.
Are you inclined to place pleasure
before duty?
Cut it out.
Does mammon seem to you the chief
end of man”
Cut it out.
Has the theory that financial suc
cess, no matter how obtained, justi
fies the means, taken possession of
your mind?
Cut it out.
It isn't a bad idea, to keep those
three words before you all the time.
Paste them over your desk. Put them
where they will greet you early in the
morning and on retiring at night.
“Cut it out.” Perhaps they may
sting the conscience just enough to
swerve you the right Way. They will
at least pop into the mind at critical
times and throw their by no means
puny weight on the side -of right and
purity in the scales of every-dav lire.
