edly One Better. j
Some peo.ple in Americus think
it was hot yesterday afternoon about
3 o'clock. There is a gentleman liv
ing in the suburbs who know it
was. 1
This gentleman is a pillar in the i
church and very fond of chickens,
raising his own poultry and getting
enough eggs for all domestic pur
poses.
Yesterday morning before coming i
up town to business he cleaned out
all of the nests as is his wont. When
he had concluded his dinner be ga
thered in the remainder of the day's
crop, some half doxen fine looking .
specimens.
He noticed when he picked up the |
, eggs that they were hot The at- |
mosphere of the hen house was pret- (
ty high. After reaching the store ,
room one of the eggs dropped to the (
floor. It broke badly, but there was (
no yolk and white messing up the
floor. Astonished, the man picked up .
the egg and examined it. Great was |
his surprise to find that it was well (
baked,- almost as solid as though it
were hard boiled.
Examinations of the other eggs ■
showed that they were in the same
condition, ready to eat without the
use of a fire.
Augusta fried egsg on its side
walks on Tuesday, but Americus does
not have to go to thus. trouble.

SHOO FLY MUST STAY ON.
Business Men Take lip the Matter With Supt. Grimshaw
HOW AMERICUS CAME TO GET THIS TRAIN LONG AGO
Merchants Appealed For It With a Promise of freight Business That In
duced Its Establishment—Conference May Be Asked for
With the Superintendent—Valuable Trade
Asset of the City.
Rumors have been current for sev-:
eral days past, and have, gained wide !
currency, that the Seaboard eontem- [
plates taking off the “Shoo-fly" train 1
reaching here at 9 o'clock in the morn-1
ing from Helena, and going on to Col
umbus, returning from that point and
reaching Americus at 5 p. m. ou the
way to Helena.
Business men have been much ex
ercised over the reports, and it is un
derstood that letters have been writ
ten to Supt. Grimshaw requesting that
nothing definite be done on this line
until the business interests of Ameri
cus can be heard from.
The “Sho-fly” brings considerable
trade to Americus .Bringing in pas
sengers at an early hour o fthe morn
ing, and enabling them to remain here
several hours for business purposes
and reacli home in the early evening,
it has been a popular train with the
public for some years. Every loom
ing a number of people come to Am
ericus on this train, do their shopping,
and return on the afternoon train. If
the “Shoo-fly" is abolished there is
no train to take its place and Ameri
cus retail interests will suffer as a
result.
There is a little interesting his
tory connected with the “Shoo-fly”
train. It was started when Cecil
Gabbett was superintendent of the
old Georgia and Alabama road, Bnd
was a concession to the business in
terests of Americus.
How It Was Secured.
Supt. Gabbett, it is stated, was op
posed to the putting on of the train
on the ground ttiat the travel would
not justify it and that it would not
pay. As an offset to this, though, the
business men of Americas quite gen
erally signed a petition for the train,
in which they declared their willing
ness and intention to divert all possi
ble of their freight business to the
G. & A., and to turn over to it not
less than two thirds of ail freights
that could possibly be routed that
way, provided the desired train was
put on.
Because of this the railway con
sented and the “Shoo-fiy” was estab
lished.
For some time the merchants relig
iously adhered to their compact, and
even to this day some of them are

:said to keep it steadfastly in mind.
However, observance of it has doubt
. l ess grown quite lax in more recent
I years.
At the same time, though, general
conditions have improved. The coun
try between here and Helena has fill
ed up with towns and people, the
travel has greatly increased, and
whereas at the time of the putting on
of the train there was a country just
developing to draw from there is now
a territory quite largely populated?
whose people are growing not only
more numerous but more prosperous
with every year.
It is not known what the earnings of
the train now are, but It is generally
felt that it must be self-supporting, at
least. There is always a good trav
el in the stretch between Helena and
Americus, although it may be light
between here and Columbus.
Business Men A:gtf.
It is quite probable that the busi
ness men, individually, and collect
ively through th eßoard ff Trade,
will take the matter up with Supt.
Grimshaw. /
Several yesterday stated that if they
had been derelict in keeping up their
agreement as to giving the Seaboard
the promised advantage in handling
their freights they were prepared to
reform their ways. Others who have
gone into business since the com
pact was entered into, and who are
not accordingly parties to it, but
who are also anxious that the “Shoo
fly" be kept on, are also expressing
an ardent desire to work in sym
pathy with the Seaboard if its man
agement will uphold the business in
terests of Americus in this and other
matters.
It is quite probably that arrange
ments will be made for a conference
with Supt. Grimshaw, who will soon
have his headquarters here.
The “Shoo-fly” is too valuable a
business asset for Americus mer
chants to sit idly by and let it be
taken off. There must be the most
strenuous sort of a fight to keep
it on. it is generally felt that the
Seaboard administration has the best
of feelings toward Americus and that
on a proper showing an understand
ing can be reached by which the
| train will keep on.

Miss Bell Will Have fine Quarters for

Ground floor Will Be Modern

Among the decided improvements
being made in business buildings in
Americus at this time is the renova
tion of the two-story brick structure
on Cotton avenue, the lower floor of
which has heretofore Been accupied
by Mr. George Wheatley as a carpet
warehouse and the upper floor by
Miss Bell's pianoforte school.
Mr. Lee Allen bought this building
' last May and determined to improve
it in keeping with the demnads of.
the day and progressive spirit of A.ru
ericus. To that end he arranged
with Mr. Wheatley to surrender pos
session of the lower floor, and with
the closing o fMiss Bell’s school and
the surrender of downstairs put con
tractors to work on the entire build
ing.
Both floors will be revolutionized in
appearance. Practically little be
yond the walls has been little be
old building. Up stairs the main au
ditorium of Miss Bell’s school has
been enlarged, a stage thirty feet
long and thirteen feet wide has been
put in, the walls and wood work
finished in white and the entire ap
pearance of the interior beautified.
When Miss Bell resumes her classes
in the fall she will have a nauditor
ium for concerts with a seating ca
pacity but little short of that of the
theatre.
On the ground floor there will be
a large store, forty by seventy feet
in size, which will also be finished off
in an attractive fashion. Large plate
glass windows will be in front. This
store will be occupied by Davis
Bros.
Both floors of the building will be
lighted by electric ceiling bulbs, as
well as by gas.
