MONTEZUMA PLAYS

CLOSE GAME IS BEING LOOKED EOR
Permission Has Been Given to Monte

of the Season Antici

i
Montezuma is coming down to Am- ,
ericus Friday primed with the hope (
of taking home the scalp of the local
baseball team as a trophy of the hot
test game of ball ever played here.
But, of course, they will be doomed
to dlsappintment. They will put up
a good game. There Is no doubt of
that. But Americus will put up a
better.
Permission has been cheerfully
granted the Montezuma captain to
bring two or three hired players. Ills
team is short some of its usual twirl
ers and so a professional or two
will be added to strengthen it and
put it in shape for the battle royal
of the season.
Montezuma lias really got a fine
team, one of the best in all Southwest
Georgia. They have a feeling of local
pride aroused, too, that will make
them put up the best there is In them.
But no one here expects other than a
defeat for the visitors, although a close
game Is generally expected.
The Americus twirlers are in fine
condition, our team being probably the
strongest amateur club that has been
got together here in many seasons.
Americus i salso short one of its
regular team, Dunn, who ha sheen at

This word of late has been In every-

I NgWBRO’S HERPICIDE does the wont.
Well, for the information of thousands of
people who like to know all about a good
thing, we would say that HERPICIDE
means, a destroyer or killer of “Herpes,”
Now "Herpes” is the family name of a
■ disease caused by various vegetable par

is the microbe that NEWBRO’S HERPI

NEGHO STRUCK -
BY LIGHTNING.
Colored Woman Got a Terriftic
Shockjfesterday.
HER CLOTHING WAS SET ON TIRE
When Came to Rolled Into the Rain
and it Saved Her from Serious
Burns—Badly Shocked Bui
Will Recover.
The terrific stroke of lightning, that
came without premonition about 5:30
o’clock yesterday afternoon, as a pre
lude to a heavy rain, struck Eliza
Frazier, a colored woman, living at
the north end of Jackson street.
The woman was standing at the open
window, about to draw in a shutter.
Tlie lightning struck her on the arm,
ran up her arm to the shoulder and
then down her side, setting her cloth
ing on fire, and stunning her tempor
arily.
When she came to her clothing fyas
in a b!|fie. Fortunately the heavy rain
had started, and she rolled, although
in great pain, into .the street, where
the flames were speedily extinguished.
Dr. McMath was summoned and gave
her the necessary attention. Although
badly shocked she will probably re
cover.
A clock and one or two other arti
cles in the room were damaged by the
lightning.

FERTILIZER TRUST NOW UP.
Senator Hays Calls Attention to Big
Corporation.
“There is one trust —and the big
gest and worst trust in the country
at that—you hear nobobdy jumping.
It is the Virgina-Carolina Chemical
. fretilizer trust,” said Senator Hays,
Monday afternoon, before the appro
priations committee, in arguing
against the bill to increase fees for
fertilizer inspection from 10 to 25
cents per ton.
Such strong opposition developed
to Chairman Hardman's bill for in
creasing the inspection fees that the
committee adjourned to consider the
bill at another meeting. It is appar
ent that there is considerable oppo
sition to this measure, and it may
fail of favorable recommendation.

YIELD IS ABOUT THE AVERAGE
, With This the Case and a Line Crop
of Cotton, and High Prices, Why
Should Any One Feel Other Than
Sanguine as to the Fall and
Winter Outlook in the City
and County?
Capt. John A. Cobb brought in a
stalk of corn from his Cobbham place
yesterday, on which were six good
ears of corn. The corn was of the
Little Cobb variety, which has been
raised around Americus for some
years. Whis this stalk may have
been exceptional there is plenty of
corn out on his place that lias sev
eral ears of corn to the stalk .
Fodder pulling is in active pro
gress all over Sumter county now.
- This work is about ten days to two
■ weeks ahead of ordinarily. This may
be due either to the heavy use of
fertilizers, forcing the growth and
rapid development of the plant, or it
1 may be due to atmospheric conditions
’ to a considerable extent.
At one time it was thought Sum
ter would make an extraordinary
>’ crop of corn this year. Then the
pendulum swung the other way and
it was feared that the corn crop
would be disappointingly small. Now
it is said that will probably pretty
well average up to the ordinary crop
of this county.
With an average yield of corn, a
good crop of cotton, 12 cents as the
prevailing price during its market
ing, and tile farmers all in good
shape to begin with, what reason is
there to anticipate anything but a
prosperous fall and winter ahead for
Sumter and Americus?
