NEW COMET IS SEEN
BY MANY IN CITY
0
Early Risers in Americus See It
Plainly.
A comet, which is just now attract
ing considerable attention, may be
seen from 3 o'clock a. m., till daylight
in the eastern portion of the heav
ens, almost directly over the part of
the horizon where the sun rises, and
about half way to the zenith at 4:30
o’clock. To the naked eye it appears
as a star of the second or third mag
nitude, with a very faint tail extend
ing westward and southward. An
opera glass shows the tail more clear- <
l.y, and a good telescope reveals a
thin straight tail several degrees long.
It is now moving rapidly eastward
towards the sun, and soon It will he
lost in the dazzling light of the lumi
nary.

WOULD AID THE
ENLISTED MEN
Dick to Introduce Bill Giving
Them More Pay.
WASHINGTON, August 19.—Sena
tor Charles Dick, of Ohio, has deter
mined to urge at the next session of
Congress a bill for increased pay for
the enlisted men of the United States
army and navy.
During the past week Senator Dick
has been in consultation with officers
of the army and navy relative to his
plan for increased pay in both of
the branches of the service. By sta
tute the pay in the naval branch of
the service is based largely upon the
pay and allowance fixed for the army.
Already he has demonstrated his
interest hi the cause by pushing a
bill which is now pending for the
improvement of the personnel of the
navy. After consultation with "Offi
cers in both branches of the ser
vice, Senator Dick, will support a
joint bill and urge its passage when
Congress convenes.
Senator Dick has been a close stu
dent of army conditions for several
years, and Is in sympathy with the
movement to give the enlisted men
more pay. He adheres to the belief
that this will be necessary if the
army is kept, at its present stand
ard.
As an example ot the hardship
encountered in getting recruits at the
present rate of pay, Senator Dick de
clares that he recently saw a com
pany of infantry on a march anu only
six enlisted men included. He says
he does not beiieve either Cong'ess or
the people will continue to sanction
laws which make such a condition
possible. He has therefore expressed
himself in hearty support of the in
creased pay project, and says he will
do all he can to see the laws modi
fied.
HAIR NATURALLY ABUNDANT.
When It h Free of Dandruff, It Growi
Luxuriantly.
Hair preparations and dandruff cures,
as a rule, are sticky or irritating affairs
that do no earthly good. Hair, when not
diseased, grows naturally, luxuriantly.
Dandruff is the cause of nine-tenths of
ill hair trouble, and dandruff is caused
by a germ. The only way to cure dand
ruff is to kill the germ; and, so far, tha
inly hair preparation that will positively
destroy the germ is Newbro’s Herpicide—
absolutely harmless, free from grease,
sediment, dye matter or dangerous drugs.
It allays itching instantly; makes hair

Over-Work Weakens
Your Kidneys.
Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood.
All the blood in your body passes through
your kidneys once every three-minutes.
The kidneys are your
blood purifiers, they fil
ter out the waste or
impurities in the blood.
If they are sick pr out
of order, they fail to do
their work.
Pains, aches andrheu
matism corne from ex
cess of uric acid in the
blood, due to neglected
kidney trouble.
Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady
heart beats, and makes one feel as though
they had heart trouble, because the heart is
over-working in pumping thick, ' kidney
poisoned blood through veins and arteries.
It used to be considered that only urinary
troubles were to be traced to the kidneys,
but now modern science proves that nearly
11 constitutional diseases have their begin
iing in kidney trouble.
If you are sick you can make no mistake
by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild

Every good citizen really feels that
he has a new lease upon life for a

been muzzled.
With iron ore ‘ill her midst” Am

the ore is here.
The windstorm yesterday shook up
the situation out at the railroad shops,
doing some slight damage to build

Some of the finest watermelons of
the season are now' being brought to
market. Americus will thus feast for
a month longer.
Another season of rain, to round
out the dog days, is promised. And
that is just what the farmers do not
want at present.
Americus hunters fear that hun
dreds of young partridges have been
drowned recently in the torrential
rains in this section.
It is only four months and nine

TO THE SENATE
Developments Show Growth of
Prohibition Sentiment.
RALEIGH, N. C., August 19.
Recent developments indicate that
when the next session of the State
legislature shall have completed its
work there will be a new and rigid
law on the statute books absolutely
prohibiting both the manufacture and
sale of intoxicating liquors within the
State of North Carolina, according to
the predictions of certain well-inform
ed persons.
It is this question of State prohibi- u
tion that is probably going to land 4
Gov. Glenn in the Senate at Washin- ]
ton as the successor of the present
.Senator Overman eighteen months
hence. Gov. Glenn has, within the
last two years, become by selection
on his own part the chief of the State
prohibition apostles in North Caro
lina. Last fall he went further than
the president of the State Anti-Saloon
League would go, and at 'the Presby
terian church at Raleigh delivered an
address, in which he declared for
State prohibition.
The president of the State Anti-
Saloon League, Josiah William Bail
ey, is still opposed to legislating pro
hibition for a community when the
majority of the people of such com
munity, be It State or county or
town, are opposed to prohibition.
Gov. Glenn has surpassed the anti
saloon chief in his zeal to accom
plish absolute prohibition laws for the
whole state.
