WORKED AN OLD TRICK
Put Griggs Badges on Roddenberry Men to Take
Them jOff Later.
(Albany Herald.)
An interesting story comes from
Tifton and Thomasville in connection
with Monday’s debate in the former
city between Congressman James M.
Grfiggs and Hon. A. S. Roddenberry,
of Thomasville.
Yesterday's Thomasville Times-En
terprise, in collection with its report
■of the debate of the day before at
Tifton, printed the following:
Judge Roddenberry’s friends say
they are more than pleased with the
result. They exhibit badges with the
inscription “Jim Griggs for Congress,”
taken from the coats of voters, and
say that what was a Griggs strong
hold is now swinging into line for
Roddenberry. Judge Griggs’ friends
claim entire satisfaction, and as is
always the case in a joint debate the
only certain result was to arouse
hotter enthusiasm among the support
ers of both.
It is in connection with the alleged
capture of Griggs badges in the audi
ence which heard the Tifton debate
that the story is told. The truth of
the matter is this:
Either before or during the debate,
it occurred to a zealous Roddenberry
supporter who had gone over as a
member of the Thomasville delegation
to help “whoop ’em up” for Thomas
county’s favorite son, to pin Griggs
badges on the coats of Roddenberry
FOR ONCE IN HISTORY
THEY ASK FOR WATER
Rain Saved Atlanta a Severe
Trouncing.
Mr. Frank Lanier returned from
Atlanta yesterday and tells an inter
esting story of how rain Monday
-saved the day for the town on
the ball field. Mr. Lanier is an en
thusiastic “fan” and went to the
game where the titanic struggle was
on between Atlanta and Memphis. The
Memphii had scored three in the first
inning, and Atlanta was in hopeless
despair at the prospect of defeat
and loss of the pennant. Then the
Lord helped Atlanta by sending the
rain in the nick of time. “Thank the
Lord” came cries from the grand
stand; "good old rain” yelled the de
lighted Atlantans, as they hoisted
their umbrellas and hiked to town,
having escaped Memphis’ skinning.

HUDSON’S TRIP
CELEBRATED
River That Bears His Name In
Gala Attire.
NEW YORK, Sept. 12. (Special)
Two hundred and ninety-eight years
ago today Hendrick Hudson sailed up
the river which bears his name, went
as far north as Albany and then came
back. Today river steamers put on
their best dress and tooted merrily
as they sped up and down the great
stream, all in honor of the beginning
of the first voyage of the first navi
gator to pass the Palisades. Up and
down the river celebrations are be
ing held in honor of the English ex
plorer who changed his name to Hen
drick to show his regret that he had
not been born a Dutchman.
Health In the Canal Zone.
The high wages paid make it a
mighty temptation to our young arti
sans to join the force of skilled
workmen needed to construct the
Panama Canal. Many are restrained
however by the fear of fevers and
malaria. It is the knowing—those
who have used Electric Bitters, who
go there without this fear, well know
ing they are safe from malarious in
fluence with Electric Bitters on
hand. Cures blood poison too, bil
iousness, weakness and all stomach,
liver and kidney troubles. Guaranteed

men who were either unknown in Tit
ton, or whose preference in the con
gressional race had not become a mat
ter of public knowledge, and make
them the means, after the debate, of
raising a little political ammunition
for the Roddenberry cause.
It was an old trick, and had been
worked thousands of time before in
every state of the union, but there was
no law against trying to work it
again.
Therefore, immediately after the
conclusion of the debate, Roddenberry
men who were all well known as such
went up to the other Roddenberry men
who had decorated themselves with
Griggs badges, and removed with a
vast deal of ceremony, the bits of rib
bon which bore the name of the pres
ent congressman.
Such was the manner in which the
trophies of Roddenberry’s triumph at
Tifton were secured.
The story comes from a source
which is to be considered absolutely
reliable. It was given to a represen
tative of the Herald by a Thomas
ville gentleman than whom no one
stands higher in the respect and con
fidence of his community, and he re
ceived his information from a Rodden
berry supporter who was a member
of the Thomasville delegation which
attended the Tifton debate.
The story is interesting, though per
haps nbt important.
TERRELL IS AGAIN
TOUCHED FOR TAXES
After Ten Years a Tax is Again
Levied.
Sumter’s good neighbor, Terrell
county, will learn this fall how it
feels to pay taxes. Practically for the
last ten years they have had no coun
ty taxes to pay, owing to the fact that
the dispensary there made so much
money that it was unnecessary. The
profits from the dispensary not only
supported the county, but helped pay
the expenses of the city of Dawson.
Now that the people have voted the
dispensary out of business and its
doors have been closed, Terrell pro
perty owners will have to go back to
paying taxes, and this year the healthy
rate of $9 on SI,OOO has been levied.
To this is added the state rate of
$5, making sl4 per SI,OOO.
WHY SO WEAK?
Kidney Troubles May be Sapping
Your Life Away.
When a healthy man or woman be
gins to run down without apparent
cause, becomes w r eak, languid, de
pressed, suffers backache, headache,
dizzy spells and urinary disorders,
look to the kidneys for the cause of
it all. Keep the kidneys well and they
will keep you well. Doan’s Kidney
Pills cure sick kidneys and keep them
well.
J. C. Culpepper, of State street, a
a corpenter and one of the best
known residents of Albany, Ga., has
tested Doan's Kidney Pills to his en
tire satisfaction and speaks of them
as follow's: “Yes, they certainly did
me a lot of good. I used them for
backache and urinary troubles from
w'hich I had been suffering for years.
I had a constant dull pain across
my loins, so very severe at times as
to completely lay me up. It w-as very
bad a tnight. I could not rest well
in any position. I would wake up at
night and fell as though my back w-as
coming apart. I w r as hardly able to
turn over in bed. The kidney secre
tions were very dark and contained a
sediment. The action of the kidneys
w r as altogether too free and passages
were accompanied with a scalding
sensation. This bothered me a great
deal during the day and often at night
I was called out of bed several times,
but until I obtained a box of Doan’s
Kidney Pills I found nothing that
helped me much. They did the work
quickly and since using them I have
not had the backache. The urine has
regained the natural color and con
tains no sediment. I feel first rate.”

PURE MILK
THEIR CRY
Scientists Gather At Brussels To
That End.
BRUSSELS, Sept. 12. (Special)
! Over 400 scientists, medical experts
: and philanthropists from all coun
tries of Europe and from America
were present when the international
milk congress began its second an
nual session here today. The organi
zation which is now carrying on its
work in all civilized countries, has
for its principal object the protection
of child life from infection by raw
milk.
One of the principal speakers at the
initial session was Nathan Strauss, of
New York, who was among the pio
neers in the pure milk movement.
“Nearly a score of years ago I be
gan this agitation in America," de-'
dared Mr. Strauss, “declaring it to
be criminal to feed young chilldren
on milk which had not been Pasteu
rized. The movement has now spread
all over America, and the government
has declared in its favor. Surgeon
General Wyman of the public health
service, at the direction of President
Roosevelt, has taken up a considera
tion of the whole milk subject, with
the view of the enactment by con
gress of a pure milk law that will
compel the eradication of tubercular
cattle from dairy herds and require
the Pasteurization of all milk that
cannot be certified as free from dis
ease germs.”
Reports of great progress in the
movement to decrease the rate of
infant mortality were reported by
delegates from nearly all European
nations.

Great State Day at the James

NORFOLK, VA., Sept. 12. (Spec

It was Maryland State Day on the

The exercises of the day were held
