PEOPIE ABE FOR ROOSEVEET
Says President of the League of Clubs
in New York Slate Believes
President Will Control Em
pire State Delegation.
WASHINGTON, D. C„ Sept. 13.
'“The delegation that will be elected in
the primaries next March to represent
the State o£ New York in the next Re
publican national convention, in my
-opinion , will be a Roosevelt delega
tion,” said John A. Stewart, of New
York City, president of the State
league of Republican clubs, at the
Arlington yesterday. Mr. Stewart re
cently made a postal card canvass of
the voters of the league of which he '
is the head, in order to gauge senti
ment in the State. He has been largely
Instrumental in calling the convention j
at Syracuse next month to consider J
the problems of the farms.
“By that I mean it will be controll- !
ed by the President,” he continued, J
“‘just as for many years the delegates !
were at the disposal of Senator Platt, j
Should Roosevelt consent to again be- j
come a candidate, they will vote sol- |
idly for him, for outside those in the j
financial district of the city the people j
of the State of New York are with the j
President as much as they ever were. |
I cannot say that he is more popular,!
because it does not seem to me that he j
could be more popular among the
mass of the people of the State than
he has been. However, if lie is not
in the race, the delegation will be fav
orable to some one who would carry
out his policies.
“It looks now as though there would
be several Cortelyou delegates. Some
will be for Taft, some for Hughes, and
still others for Cannon. I do not think
the delegates will be instructed for j
any candidate, but it is certain that
they will all be favorable to Mr.
Roosevelt.
“As for what New York wants in
the platform, I have yet to meet a
voter in the State who does not be
lieve that the tariff ought to be revis
ed, and who does not believe that a
plank favoring it should be incorpor
ated in the platform of the Republican
party.”
“Are you a Hughes man?” was
asked.
This question rather nettled Mr.
Stewart. “There has been altogether
too much talk about the man and not
enough about the party,” he declared.
“No one man should consider himself
above the party organization, that
instrumentality without which he can
not be successful in pushing his poli
tics. I do not mean the machine or
organization, but the party, composed
of 650,000 Republicans in the State of
New York. We must disintegrate, un
less we work in elections for the com
mon good of the party and the prin
ciples it represents.”

Unique Case In the Courts

BOOZE ERIE WITH SOFT BRISKS
Alleged That Defendant Sole Coca
Cola for Stiff Price and Threw
Bottled Beer Into the
Bargain.
In police court yesterday Mayor
Hawkins called a case which, for gen
uine uniqueness, headed the docket.
The defendant was charged with sell
ing coca cola, and with each sale
presenting the purchaser a bottle of
beer. A bottle of “coca” sells for a
nickel, ordinarily, but in this instance
the price is advanced several hundred
percent, over invoice figures, hence
the generosity regarding, the beer,
which is thus disposed of sans license
if the story is true, as alleged. The
fair defendant was not ready for
trial yesterday, and the case was
continued for the time.
