Gossip Via The Metropolis.
NEW YORK, Sept. 18. (Special)
Or the Democratic side of the fence
4h<> New York situation in its barren
ness of. suggestion is almost tragic.
Many New York Democrats desire to
prevent the nomination of William J.
Bryan., but, they say, so stripped is
the party of Presidential timber that
no bint of a standard-bearer that
does not arouse amusement has been
marie To use the language of one of
the most brilliant of Southern Dem
ocrats. “The New York Democratic
si&iation reminds one of the Dismal
Swamp.”
The effort of certain ambitious
Bombers of Tammany Hall to inter
act the country in Lieutenant-Gover
■aor Chanler has not met with sue
isess. Supporters of Mr. Chanler have
been pouring out money like water in
maintaining a literary bureau here,
Int the literary bureau has done lit
tle accept excite merriment. Members
j{ Congress from the South who come
M-re are immediately corailed and
nrged to give interviews showing Mr.
Chanler to be the Moses of Democ
racy. Most of these men ask “But
who is Chanler?” When told that he
Jts the Lieutenant-Governor of the
date, who was elected at the same
time that Charles E. Hughes swept
the State against a Democrat, they

"But is he a Democrat?”
This is the rock on which the boom
it the Lieutenant-Governor is being
wrecked. Democrats who have gone
into the matter say he is now reap

Tammany May Have Trick.
The general belief here is that the
Tammany contingent that is urging
Mr Chaner for the President is real
ly seeking to get him the nomination
for Vice-President. Tammany has
naver been influential in national
eaavmrtions. It fought Cleveland

That he is a young man of business !

Bryan Can Have It. If—
William J. Bryan, it is stated here, j
in.: made distinct headway during |
i’c last two weeks. His vigorous at- j
sek of Secretary Taft in Oklahoma
s> “the great postponer” indicates to
im minds of Democrats in the South !
and East that Bryan believes Taft
will get the Republican nomination,
and that lie is convinced that he can !
defeat Taft at the polls. The determ- j
[tuition of Governor Johnson, of Min- j
aesota, 'to not allow the use of his ;
smut iu the Democratic National
Convention is taken that the strength
«f the Northwest will go to Bryan.
Reports received here from all that
section is that Bryan’s popularity is
such that no other name will he con
sidered by the Democratic delegates
from the States of Wisconsin, North
Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota,
Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho,
Wyoming and Colorado.
It is also said that the position of
Vlr. Bryan in his party is very similar
co .hat of Mr. Roosevelt in th IT -
publican party. Bryan can have the
nomination with thanks. No one else
will be nominated unless Mr. Bryan
Approves. But if Mr. Bryan should
endeavor to name his successor for
ike party leadership he would have to
Igbt, and fight hard.

SCIENCE PREVENTS BALDNESS.
The Fatal Germ ami Its Remedy Now
Facta of Science.
It is the rarest thing in the world for
a. man to be necessarily bald. No man
whose hair is not dead at the roots, need
be bald if he will use Newbro's Herpi
cide, the new scalp antiseptic. Herpi
cide destroys the germ that cuts the hair
off at the root; and cleans the scalp of
dandruff and leaves It in a perfectly
healthy condition. Mr. Mannett, in the
Maryland Block, Butte, Mont., was en
tirely bald. In less than a month Herpi
cide had removed the enemies of hair
growth, and nature did its work by cov
ering his head with thick hair an inch
leng, and in six weeks he had a normal
suit of hair. Sold by leading druggists.

DENY CANCER
IS INFECTIOUS
Harvard Scientists Combat the
French Theory.
BOSTON, Sept. 18.—Combating the
theory of French scientists that can
cer is infectious, two experts of the
Harvard Medical School, who have
made special study of the subject, de
clare that cancer is not readily com
municated from one human being to
another.
Dr. Edward Hall Nichols, former
head of the Harvard Cancer Commis
sion, says:
“The fact that three or four families
living in the same house are affected
with cancer seems to me to be a mere
coincidence and to prove nothing.
Cancer is a very common disease and
is certainly not contagious or infec
tious.”
Under Dr. E. E. Tyzzer and Dr.
Nichols, the Harvard cancer commis
sion has made hundreds of experi
ments on various animals, but all with
the Sanaa result,
jap
Dr. Tyzzer said of the Paris exper
iments:
“Cancer and cancerous diseases
have puzzled the physicians of the
whole world for generations. For
many years specialists have been
studying it in all of its' forms and un
der all conditions ,and when one
physician makes some experiment and
gets what he believes sk a new re
sult, he publishes his theories with
the common result that the others
quickly study his findings and usually
soon prove that he has demonstrated
nothing new.”
What Do They Cure?
The above question is often asked con
cerning Dr. Pierce’s two leading medi
cines, "Golden Medical Discovery” and
"Favorite Prescription.”
The answer is that "Golden Medical
Discovery ” is a most potent alterative or
blood-purifier, and tonic or invigorator
and acts especially favorably in a cura
tive way upon all the mucous lining sur
faces, as of the nasal passages, throat,
bronchial tubes, stomach, bowels and

by physicians of all the schools of practice

The words of praise bestowed s on tlio
several ingredients entering into Doctor
Pierce’s medicines by such writers should
have more weight than any amount of
non - professional testimonials, because
such men arc writing for the guidance of
their medical brethren and know whereof
they speak.
