MAKES A TRUCE
WITH HUGHES.
Administration is Not to
Eight the Governor.
HARMONY POLICY IN EffECT
Other Candidates Sore Because Pres
ident is Boosting His favorite —
Roosevelt Denies That He is Un
duly Pressing Claims of Taft.
To Apply Popularity Test.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30. (Spec
ial)—President Roosevelt is not go
ing to fight Governor Hughes, accord
ing to persons here who understand
his position. He is said to realize
that the future of the party in New
York depends on peaceable relations
between the Washington and Albany
administrations. Therefore, Mr.
Roosevelt will not be drawn into
any contest over the delegates from
New 7 York to the next Republican Na
tional Convention. If Governor
Hughes desires the delegation from
his own State, and the party wants
to elect and instruct Hughes dele
gates, the President will not inter
fere. This will avert a contest be
tween these two popular Republi
cans.
Were Getting Ready for Scrap.
On the other hand, the friends of
Governor Hughes have been active in
making arrangements to fight the
Federal Administration in case
there should be any interference.
Tims there has been constant dan
ger that the Federal and State w'ings
of the party would become involved
in a contest for supremacy in the
State tvhich would endanger Repub
lican success. On top of these evi
dences of mutual distrust have come
the efforts of enemies of President
Roosevelt, who have sought to press
Hughes to the front because they be
lieve the Governor's nomination
would be distasteful to the President
and Avould be regarded as a defeat
for Roosevelt. There has been a
feeling that former Governor Odell
would folloAV his unsuccessful move
of last May by introducing another
resolution at the next meeting of the
Republican State Committee declar
ing for Hughes for President.
Ohio Candidate Disgruntled.
It is said here that Avithin the past
feAv days both President Roosevelt
and GoA 7 ernor Hughes haA'e been
made acquainted with this state of
affairs, and that in consequence the
President has caused his friends to
know 7 that he will not sanction any
attack whatever on Hughes. On the
other hand, it is said that the GoA7er
nor is not going to permit himself to
be used for an instrument for humil
iating or punishing the Federal Ad
ministration. In this w 7 ay it is believ
ed the danger Avhich confronted the
party has been averted.
Other candidates are said to hold
the idea that the President is boom
ing Taft and is not treating them
right. Mr. Roosevelt is represented
as saying that he is doing nothing to
unduly advance the interests of the
Secretary of War. If it should be dis
closed that Taft lacks the essentials
of popularity, the President Avould be
pretty sure to withdraw his support
from the Ohio man. He honestly de
sires a candidate who will carry out
his policies, but he also considers a
candidate’s ability to carry the coun
try as paramount, because the elec
tion of a Democrat Avould be. in his
eyes, a great calamity.
Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the
ear. There is only one way to cure
deafness, ar.d (hat is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lin
ing of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is inflamed you haA 7 e a
rumbling sound or imperfect hear
ing, and Avhen it is entirely closed,
deafness is the result, and unless the
inflammation can be taken out and
this tube restored to its normal con
dition, hearing will be destroyed for
ever; nine cases out of ten are caus
ed by Catarrh, which is nothing but
an inflamed condition of the mucous
surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars

Pretty Girls as Dairy MdiJs Milk the

-The Gows Prove a Show
to City Folk as Well,
NEW YORK, Sept. 30. (Special)
Fat, sleek cows are quartered in the
basement of Madison Square Garden,
as assistant demonstrators at the
National Electric show, which op
ened today.
The coavs are employed to show the
use of a new 7 fangled electric milker.
Pretty girls, clad in regulation cos
tume, are helping the cows in their
efforts to convince the public that
the electric milkers are the most
sanitary, conx r enient expedient and
economical.
It is expected that thousands of
farmers and dairymen will attend
to investigate this and other elec
trical contrivances of interest to
them. Many men, Avomen and child
ren of the metropolis Avho have never
seen a coav will also be interested.
The electrical show proper is the
most complete ever held in this or
any other country. The main hall
of the garden is divided by three ave
nues—Edison, Westinghouse and j
Franklin—runing east and west, with ’
three cross streets running north
and south. Along these streets are
ranged every electrical invention ev 7 er
conceded by the mind of man, in
cluding scores of new inventions that
have" not yet become popularized. The
interior is decked with 300,000 elec
tric lights, rivaling even Coney Island
in its glory.
Tavo big conventions, the State
Street Railway association and the
State Gas and Electric association,
will met during the show 7 , and will be
addressed by Chairman Stevens of
the public service commission.

THO’ DEBTS ARE HUGE
ALBANY, N. Y., Sept. 30. (Special)
t—State Treasurer Hauser’s report
for the fiscal year ending at midnight
shows a substantial increase in re
ceipts and expenditures. The receipts
for the year aggregate, in round num
bers, $40,000,000, an increase of $7,-
000,000 over last year.
The total expenditures were over
$40,000,000, an increase of $7,000,000.
The largest increase in receipts
came from mortgage taxes, nearly
$2,500,000 more being paid into the
state treasury than in the preceding
year. The receipts from the excise
and inheritance taxes also show 7 an
increase.
The funds of the state are deposit
ed in the national and state banks
throughout the state at a uniform
rate of interest. The present state
treasurer has increased the income
from this source by insisting on a
higher rate of interest than xvas for
merly paid the state for deposits.
