—The action taken by Re
publican leaders in Georgia against
any candidate for president repres

be followed by similar action in other
Southern tSates, is regarded here as
the direct result of scheming by

It has been found in different sec

division as to second choice, after
Bnosevelt is out of the way. So per
afctent is the failure to recognize what
Jias been repeatedly pointed out to
them that it seemed as if there was
a purpose in this apparent density of
understanding. For instance, in the
recent Congressional convention in
the Eighth Virginia district ' when

everybody Welcome, Americus, Georgia.
THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1907
pec ted, in control of the Federal offi
cials, he made the astonishing dis
covery that the delegates did not
know for whom they were supposed
to stand after indorsing the Presi
dent.
Later he learned that they were
for none other than George Bruce
Cortelyou, Secretary of th Treasury,
and the one man above another w r ho
should know that Taft was the choice
of the White House.
Now, it so happened that the South
was placed for survey in charge of
Assistant Postmaster General Hitch
cock, to \Hiom everything was left,
it was some of these Hitchcock men
in Virginia that did not know that
they were for Taft.
Capers Found Wanting.
Internal Revenue Commissioner Ca
pers is another to whom things were
intrusted along these lines, and he,
too, has been found wanting. Early
in the game, traces were found of
the ambition of Cortelyou, and now
they have become distinct footprints,
it is a game of bureaucracy that is
being played, Taft men allege. They
declare that it is planned that Cor
telyou, through his long connection
with national administrations and
the party machinery, is to secure a
strong following in the “solid South.”
When it is understood that this vote
is practically in the hands of the few
men who hold the Federal offices,
and that they are friendly to the Sec
retary of the Treasury in a personal
way, the probability of getting votes
there seems strong.
Then New York is to be gaged af
ter Hughes has shot lis bolt, that
being Cortelyou's native State. With
these tools it is expected to produce
a deadlock. In turn this is to be fol
lowed by the breaking to the Sec
retary of the Treasury of Pennsyl
vania, Illinois, and other States in
control of the conservatives.
lia> Been Watching Game.
This is no fanciful figment of a
strenuous imagination. It is told to
day coldly by a Republican of nat
ional prominence, who has been wat
ching the angles of this great game.
It may he that some definite declar
ations may be soon expected from
Secretary Cortelyou as to his inten
tions, and also that Assistant Post
inatser General Hitchcock, and In
ternal Revenue Commissioner Cabers
wil be requested for explanations of
what they have already done.
