FINANCIAL TROUBLES
HURT COTTON VALUES
Local Market Stronger in
Late AEternoon.
Troubles in Wall street were dis
astrous to cotton contract values yes
terday, and spread into the spot
transactions. The difficulties of the
money market deter any holding of
either contracts or spots, hence the
producer must support the market
for actual cotton as the spinners
gradually satisfy their needs. Devel
opments yesterday added materially
to the tendency to force the grower
of cotton to feed his crop into the
market as it is needed, rather than
throw it all out within a few weeks.
Some consolation perhaps might
be derived from the fact that the de
clines were not remarkably severe,
all things considered. The firmness
of holders of cotton, which the bear
speculator is liable to need very bad
ly a little later, gave the latter food
for thought more than in years past
when the speculator largely ignored
the farmer.
The opening was at declines, Liver
pool ffieing disappointing. Prices a
little later showed a tendency to ad
vance, but when the news of the sus
pension of the Knickerbocker Trust
Company was spread abroad, the
cotton market could not be held, al
though prices conducted an orderly
retreat. The close was steady. New
York was 12 to 14 points net lower
for the active months, and New Or
leans 14 to 16 points below the close
for Monday for the active positions.
Spots in the former market ruled 15
points lower and at the latter 1-4 of
a cent lower. Liverpool spots were
4 points lower with sales of 10,000
bales. Futures in that market were
3 to 9 points lower.
The reecipts for the day at lead
ing ports were: Galveston 15,824;
New Orleans, 11,063; Savannah 2,192
In the Americus spot market val
ues were reduced 1-S of a cent from
the day before, good middling being
quoted at 10 3-4 cents. Sales on this
basis were made during the morning,
but in the afternon buyers were
bidding 10 7-8 cents.
The offering stock was cleaned up
at the price named, but in some in
stances warehousemen had orders
to hold for a better price. The re
ceipts for the day were 294 bales.
Present prices are 1-8 of a cent high
er than for the same day last year.

pons.
During the two days the court has
been at work the docket has been con

but few cases that have not been dis
posed of.

We desire to remark just here that we are not consuming
the time of our patrons during their visits to us for business
purposes by regaling them with uncalled for and unjust crit
icisms of other merchants in the city. Such methods are low,
dirty and contemptible, beneath the notice of all good people.
We make it a rule to attend to our own business and our em
ployes are always instructed to do the same, leaving the bus
iness of any and all competitors severely alone.
The removal of the ready-to-wear department to the
ground floor, the curtailing of all unnecessary expenses hith
erto attached to the same while on the second floor, thereby
enabling us to give to the trade the benefit of lower prices re
sulting from same has increased the business in this depart
ment enourmosly over what it has ever been in our history
and each succeeding day shows the most gratifying increase
everyway. The department is an ornament to this store as it
would be to any mercantile establishment in Georgia.
We cordially invite you to call and look and it will be our
pleasure to show you through whether you wish to buy or not.
Don’t forget that the silks and dress goods, notions, under
wear, hosiery, gloves, ribbons, linens and white goods, wash
goods and all other departments are full to overflowing with
everything new and up-to-date. Carpets, rugs, mattings, win
dow shades, trunks, etc., in abundance.
