BELIEVED CRISIS HAS
PASSED AT NEW YORK
Though Three Earge Banks
Suspended Payment.
NEW YORK, Oct. 25.—(Special)
Two small Brooklyn financial institu
tions failed to open this morning,
these being the International Trust
Company and the Brooklyn Bank.
The following banking institutions
suspended payment today under the
law permitting such a course: First
National fiank of Brooklyn, capital
$300,000, deposits $4,250,000; Wil
liamsburg Trust Company, of Brook
lyn, capital $700,000, deposits $7,500,-
000; Borough Bank, Brooklyn, capital
$200,000, deposits $3,000,000.
Notwithstanding the unfavorable
incidents of the day, the general opin
ion among financiers is that the crisis
has passed. At a conference this af
ternoon a pool of $10,000,000 was
formed to take care of the money
needs of the stock exchange. It is al
so understood that Morgan is ready to
assist the exchange with $25,000,000
as on yesterday. ,
Call money commanded 50 to 60 per
cent today.
Receiver For Trust Company.
PROVIDENCE, R. 1., Oct. 25.
(Special)—The Union Trust Company
failed to open this morning. A run
on the previous day so drained the re
sources of the bank that it was deem
ed best to suspend. Cornelius A.
Sweetland was appointed receiver.
The bank has a capital of $500,000,
with deposits of $25,000,000. Branches
of the bank at East Greenwich and
Central Falls have also closed.
Took Advantage of Law
BALTIMORE, MD., October 25.
(Special)—A run was started on the
East branch of the Home Bank this
morning. The bank took advantage of
the statute giving 60 days to pay
depositors and suspended immediate
payment.
Wanamaker Store All Right.
NEW YORK, Oct. 25.—(Special)
John Wanamaker today issued a state
ment to the effect that his business
was in fine shape. His New York store
was never in a more prosperous con
dition, he declared.
W. C. T. U. OPPOSES
ALCOHOLIC MEDICINES
COLUMBUS, GA„ Oct. 25.—(Spe
cial) —The Georgia Woman’s Temper
ance Union has placed itself on record
as strongly opposed to the use of pat
ent medicines containing alcohol, and
will wage a vigorous crusade against
preparations that it considers objec
tionable. The crusade will not take
the form of court proceedings, but
will consist of an effort to arouse
public opinion to the extent that med
cines containing an undue proportion
of alcohol will not be in favor..
An interesting feature of the
parliament on medical temperance
Thursday was a demonstration in
which a certain widely advertised and
very popular medicine was subjected
to a test in the presence of the audi
ence. The liquid in question was
boiled, and the gas as it passed
through a Welsbach burner was light
ed. A bright flame sprang up and
burned for some time, thereby show
ing the quantity of alcohol in the med
icine.
Big Crowd at Theatre.
The attendance at the theatre yes
terday evening was a record one, just
six hundred spectators seeing beauti
ful “Cinderella.”

KILLED A BIG BUNGH
' OE SNAKES IN CITY
Half Dozen are Found in
City Limits.
Americus is still headquarters for
rattlesnakes, many huge reptiles hav
ing been killed here recently, and
yesterday the record was still further
increased by the killing of six huge
“diamond backs” near the plant of
the Americus Oil Company.
Ilenry Daniel,, a colored man,
found them at a point where the rail
way tracks cross, and killed them.
Two of the snakes were of great
size, one bearing twenty-three rattles
and another twenty-four. The other
; four were not so large, but big fel
lows, as rattlers grow.
Another snake story is that of a
white hunter, who had a very narrow
' escape, Ins hat saving him.
Seeing a big rattlesnake, as he
supposed, he shot it, and desiring to
secure the rattles he stooped over to
cut them off. Another rattlesnake at
the same moment struck at him, the
deadly fangs fastening in the brim of
the hunter’s hat.
\ Perhaps a hundred huge fellows
have been killed here this year, and
young men going possum hunting at
night run great risk; as October is
the worst month for rattlers.
MR. PAGE IS STRICKEN
BY DEATHJON FRIDAY
Passes Away After a Brief
Illness.
Following an illness of a few hours
Mr. J. Leonard Page passed away
at 4:30 o’clock yesterday morning,
the end resulting from a stroke of
paralysis of the day previous and
causing deepest apprehension, by
reason of his more recent ill health.
While his condition was regarded
as serious, his family and friends hop
ed that he would recover, as later in
the day some improvement in his con
dition was noted.
During the night, however, he grew
rapidly worse and passed away as
the new day dawned.
And in the death of Leonard Page
the city and county loses a man of
exalted character and most estimable
citizen. Reared in Sumter county, all
of the 60 years of his useful life were
spent here in the development of his
county and section.
Mr. Page served valiantly during
the Civil war, and at the close of hos
tilities returned to his plantation home
near Americ.us, assisting as did
others in building up the land re
cently devastated by the war.
A man of high sense of honor and
strict integrity, he held the regard of
the entire community.
Mr. Page is survived by his wife,
three daughters, Mrs. T. S. Collins,
Mrs. O. L. Dixon and Miss Kate Page,
and one son, Walter Page. Another
daughter, Mrs. G. W. Walters, passed
away only a few weeks since, the
family thus being doubly bereaved.
The funeral exercises will be held
from the First Methodist church this
morning at 10:30 o’clock, conducted
by Rev. J. P. Wardlaw. The pall
bearers will bo Messrs. W. P. Wallis,
W. S. Prather, K. M. McDonald, T. M.
Furlow, Thos. Harrold, A. Robinson.
And a large concourse of sorrowing
friends will pay tribute to the mem
ory of this estimable citizen.
LADIES TO HOLD A
SESSION OF COURT
The “moot court” trial under aus
pices of the Rebekas on Tuesday
night next, 29th, at Odd Fellows hall,
will prove an occasion of greatest
interest. A divorce trial will be the
feature of interest, and two of Ameri
cus’ brainiest young barristers will
conduct the. case. When the “court
session” ends and the poor man given
his liberty, (perhaps), a tempting
menu will be served in the dining
hall.
