WEST VA. TAKES
PRESIDENT AT WORD.
Little Enthusiasm Eor Third
Term.
WASHINGTON, D. C., October 25.
—(Special)—Representative Joseph
Holt Gaines, strong Republican of
the Third Congressional district of
West Virginia,, finds little enthus
iasm in his State for the renomina
tion of President Roosevelt. He says
the people are taking the President
at his word when he said he would
not again become a candidate. Should
he decide to accept the nomination,
Representative Gaines does not be
lieve the people of West Virginia
would vote for him.
“The people of West Virginia, I
believe, consider President Roosevelt
an honest and courageous man, but
the traditional prejudice against a
third term is pronounced among
them,” said Mr. Gaines. “The people
seem radically opposed to overthrow
ing the rule laid down by Washing
ton. Besides, we do not consider that
the President's re-election is essent
ial to carrying out reforms which
have proved and will prove to the
welfare of the country. Regardless
of who may be the next president re
form will go on. The people have
learned the lesson. Suits will con
tinue to be brought against the rail
ways if they can be based upon just
cause, and the interstate Commerce
Commission and the Supreme Court
will be kept busy. Why? Because the
people have learned the game; law
yers have learned the game, and can
play it just as well whether President
Roosevelt is re-elected or not.
“I take the President at his word.
I do not think he will accept the
nomination. As for who the next
President will be, I think the expres
sion ‘all in a muddle’ characterizes
the condition of my mind.”
The Story of a Medicine.
Its name—" Golden Medical Discovery"
was suggested by one of its most import
ant and valuable ingredients Golden
Beal root.
Nearly forty years ago, Dr. Pierce dis
covered that he could, by the use of pure,
triple-refined glycerine, aided by a cer
tain degree of constantly maintained
heat and with the aid of apparatus and
appliances designed for that purpose, ex
tract from our most valuable native me
dicinal roots their curative properties
much better than by tho use of alcohol,
so generally employed. So the now world
famed "Golden Medical Discovery," for
the cure of weak stomach, indigestion, or
dyspepsia, torpid liver, or biliousness and
kindred derangements was first made, as
it ever sinie has b\en, without a particle
of alcohol in its make-up.

From the.se endorsements, copied from
standard medical books of ali the differ

that the ingredients composing the "Gold
en Medical Discovery” are advised not
only for tho cure of the above mentioned
diseases, but also for the cure of all ca
tarrhal, bronchial and throat affections,
accompained with catarrhal discharges,
hoarseness, sore throat, lingering, or
hang-on-coughs, and all those wasting
affections which, if not promptly and
properly treated are liable to terminate
in consumption. Take Dr. Pierce’s Dis
covery in time and persevere in its use
until you give it a fair trial and it is not
likely to disappoint. Too much must not
be expected of it. It will not perform
miracles. It will not cure consumption
in its advanced stages. No medicine will.
It will cure the affections that lead up to
consumption, if tuKcn in Unit.

ANTI TRUST LAW
IS TOO EXTREME
View Taken at Conference
by Pres. Butler. ”**"
CHICAGO. ILL., October 25.
(Special)—ln an address before the
trust Conference of the National Civ
ic Federation, President Murray, of
Columbia College, took the position
that the Sherman anti-trust law com
mits the nation to a policy which is
too extreme.
He said in part:
"Problems of grave importance, not
only legal, but political in the highest
sense, arise when we attempt to fix
the ways and means by which the
Government shall control and super
vise public service corporations. Our
constitutional limitations, our politi
cal traditions and past party differ
ences, and the complex structure of
our whole government system, with
its state and national agencies, make
the large problem of governmental
control of corporations an ex
tremely difficult one. There are
those who think they see short and
easy methods of accomplishing the
desired end, hut my prediction is
that, true to the characteristics of
our people, we shall work out a just
solution of these involved prob
lems, not at one stroke or by wholly
logical processes, but step by step
and after many experiments, and not
a few unforeseen difficulties will have
to be surmounted or circumvented.
Care must be taken, Mr. Butler
said, not to distrub that confidence
which is the basis of our credit sys
tem. He declared that the abuses of
corporate management were manifold
and that they have justly aroused
much feeling, but that there is an
ample remedy in our constitution and
laws.
Os the Sherman law, he said:
“There is reason to believe that the
Sherman anti-trust law commits the
nation to a policy which is too ex
treme to a policy that, in putting an
end to certain admitted evils, also
puts an end to certain demonstrable
benefits. Many of us believe that the
act set unduly exalts the principle
of competition and fails to lay due
emphasis upon the public benefits
which may follow from properly reg
ulated and supervised co-operation.
Jieafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the
ear. There is only one way to cure
deafness, and (hat is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lin
ing of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hear
ing, and when it is entirely closed,
deafness is the result, and unless the
inflammation can be taken out and
this tube restored to its normal con
dition, hearing will be destroyed for
ever; nine cases out of ten are caus
ed by Catarrh, which is nothing but
an inflamed condition of the mucous
surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars

catarrh) that cannot be cured by
