AMERICUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY MORNING NOVEMBER 2, 1907
BANKERS OF AMERICUS
EXPECT IMPROVEMENT
Outlook is Brighter at
: Present.
Despite the stringency so generally
prevailing over the country and the
difficulty experienced in Americus, as
elsewhere, in moving the cotton crop
as rapidly as desired, the banks of
this city feel amply able to cope with
the situation, and are putting forth
all efforts to that end. The situation
has been fully discussed, and the
opinion prevails among them that with
the influx of millions of gold to this
country, and the further fact that
conditions are daily growing brigh
ter, the general stringency will quick
ly be relieved, and that within a very
few days normal conditions will again
prevail'.

for a survey of a great canal from
Cairo to Brunswick via Atlanta.

MASONS WILL ERECT A
NEW HOME FOR LODGE
Splendid New Building Is
Proposed.
Americus Masons who attended the
Grand Lodge session this week state
that authority to purchase a suitable
site for a new Masonic temple in or
near Macon was granted by the grand
lodge to the special committee that
was named a year ago to look into
the advisability of the building of a
new temple or the remodeling of the
old one.
This means that within a few years
the grand lodge will have new quar
ters in or near Macon.
Although the members of the grand
lodge will not say where the site is
it is generally understood that a cer
tain place near the city has been pick
ed out and an offer to buy will be
made shortly.
The Masons wish their new temple
constructed along the lines of the
most modern architecture and it may
be built along the lines of a church
in some respects. Os course these
plans are subject to change and
nothing more will be done during
the year than the purchase of a suit
able site.
Mr. P. R. Stanfield, who attended
the session with other past masters
of Americus, was the oldest Mason
of the 1200 in attendance. He has
been a Mason for sixty-six years and
is still enjoying good health.
FIELDS ARE SWEPT BY
AN ARMY OF GUNNERS
Americus is Feasting on
Quail Today.
/ “Quail on toast” will he the tempt
ing menu served in scores of Ameri
cus homes today as the fruits of yes-
partridge shooting./ The
fact that it was the first of tne month
and a 'very busy day deterred many
gunners from going afield, but dozens
of them went, notwithstanding, and
found game in plenty. Few of the
birds had previously been shot up by
pot hunters, and the sportsmen found
no difficulty in getting up numerous
covies, some of them in the outskirts
of the city, where their haunts had
previously been located. One gunner
found a covey near Oakgrove Ceme
tery and killed seven out of it, so
gentle were the birds. Even at this
date many of the birds killed yester
day were little more than half grown,
a fact which emphasized the wisdom
of the state game laws.
Harriman Owner of Ga.
ATLANTA, GA., Nov. I.—(Special)
—lt is now believed by prominent
railroad men that Harriman is the
real purchaser of the Central of
Georgia. It is pointed out that this
would give him power in the East,
South and far West on through lines
now controlled in his interest.
The idea would be for a connection
at Birmingham with the Illinois Cen
tral, the Central of Georgia complet
ing a through line from ocean to
ocean.
