BAD BREAK IN
COTTON VALUES
Local Market Was Without
Sign of Activity.
It was another bad day for cotton
contract values. Losses, which were
moderate at the opening, soon be
came more aggreviated, and from
Liverpol to New Orleans the day
ended in a rout. Net losses for the
more active i>ositions were 22 to 31
points. Stop loss orders w r ere caught
as the market declined. In the Eng
lish market a severe slump occurred
in the latter part of the session due
to a rumor of renewal of labor trou
bles, and this took away the last
chance for a rally on this side. New
Orleans, as on the day before weak
ened still further after the close at
New York.
The New'York market opened 6
to 12 points lower and steadied itself
momentarily, but the downward march
began in a minute or two. In the
afternoon prices rallied on covering by
early sellers, but the close was only
a little up from the lowest, 13 points
lower for October, but 22 to 28 points
lower for more active months, as
compared with the close for Thurs
day. Spot prices were marked down
20 points. New Orleans opened un
changed for July, but 12 points down
for other positions. After a brief
rally, the market worked lower. The
close was at the lowest for the day,
25 to 31 points below r the final for
the day before.
Liverpool opened 1 to 5 points off,
which was about as due. At the ear
ly afternon call a little additional
loss had been suffered. The market
broke sharply in the last hour, the
close being easy, 11 to 14 points be
low the last figures for Thursday.
The market is due 5 to 6 points lower
this morning. Spots were reduced 2
points, the sales being the very small
total of 3,000 bales.
The local spot market \y#s practi
cally stagnant. The break in the
controlling centers drove the buyers
out of the market. Holders were
firm in their views and the gap be
tween buyers and sellers price views
was. probably a yawning one. In the
absence of transactions, quotations
are left the same as on Thursday.
