IHE raid OF THE BISCUIT
IS CHASING AIRSHIPS.
Americas Consumers of Biscuit Up
Against It.
•With a rise of a dollar a barrel in
flour during the last month, it looks
like consumers will have to pay more
for bread than ever unless something
happens to stop the skyward career of
flour. There is one consoling ray, if
one wants to take the alternative and
eat cornbread.
This section of the state, and other
states, report a bumper crop of corn,
and prices of this staple ought to go
down while flour is making its upward
climb.
The rise in wheat puts Amuricus
consumers—those afraid of cornbread
—up against it real hard.
Flour is now selling at from $6.75
to $7 a barrel, a big difference from
ten years ago.
Then it could be bought for $3.50 a
barrel, which price was not thought
too low by those who had to foot the
bills in those days. It will be seen
that the biscuits “mother used to
make” did not cost so much as the
ones we get today.
The September squeeze which sent
prices skyrocketing in the wheat mar
ket did not seem to affect the prices
when people wanted to buy real wheat.
But there has been a steady increase
in prices for the real article, and
bread is due to go higher as a result.
Right here it may be said that bread
has already gone higher.
Some of the bakers reduced the size
of their loaves last July when prices
took an upward tendency, and forgot
to increase the size when prices
dropped again.
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy has
become famous for its cures of coughs,
colds, croup and influenza. Try it
when in need. It contains no harmful
substance and always gives prompt
relief. Sold by all dealers.

“ST. ELMO” WILL BE GREETED
BY LARGE AUDIENCE HERE.
Fine Attraction on Wednesday Night
at Opera House.
It is safe to assert that not one per
son in ten who have read more than
a dozen novels is unfamiliar with Au
gusta J. Evans’ powerful romance of
Southern life, “St. Elmo.” And it will
delight the thousands of admirers of
that classic to learn that tomorrow
evening a dramatization of that fa
mous book will be seen at the Ameri
cus theatre, interpreted by a cast of
more than ordinary merit. Mr. Two
mey, the author, is favorably known
as a master of stagecraft and his ver
sion of St. Elmo is a sympathetic and
faithful translation of the Action char
acters into flesh and blood. A carload
of special scenery and properties will
be carreid that the atmosphere of the
scenes may be reproduced to the
smallest detail.
