THE STRADDLE IN INDIANA.
I The action of the Republican state
k! convention in Indiana reminds one
I i very much of the old saying about con-
I detuning the sin but loving the sinner.
) The official gathering of the party in
Indiana refused to approve the Aldrich
i bill but endorsed protection. In ef
fect it repudiated recent legislation
while adhering to tbe very principles
on which that legislation was based.
At the same time it endorsed the ad
ministration which stood for the legis
lation that it declined to put the
stamp of its approval upon.
If there was anything needed tc
1 convince the world ’bat the Republican
’ party 13 in an apologetic state, this
j action of the state convention in In
diana would furnish it. Senator Bev
eridge seemed to be a sort of popular
idol with the convention and received
a thorough endorsement at its hands
■ Yet Beveridge Is one of the harshest
critics of the recently enacted tariff
law that the senate holds. He has in
sisted that it did not comply with
what the party had promised to the
people. President Taft has on several
occasions insisted that it did meet
the party pledges, and that the only
weakness was the failure to lower
.the woolen schedules.
The Republicans of Indiana accord
ingly occupy the anomalous position
of endorsing, in one and the same
platform, President Taft’s stand on the
tariff and the contrary position of
Senator Beveridge, of pointing with
pride to the party record at Washing
ton and at the same time refusing to
. endorse the biggest piece of legisla
tion the party has attempted in a num
* her of years. That th's will hold it
- up to ridicule on the stump when the
state campaign gets in progress is, of
course, inevitable. A straddle like Til.s
unquestionably weakens the party in
the eyes of all intelligf * men.
Indiana was once a rock-ribbed
“ Democratic state. Then it became a
doubtful state, with just as much
- chance of its going Democratic as
h Republican. In the past three cam
d paigns its people have repudiated
Bryanlsm and given its electoral vote
to the Republicans. It now bas a
Democratic state administra’ion,
though, and the state seems ready to
swing hack into the Democratic
■ column. With division in the Republi
can ranks this is plainly probable if
the Democratic party does not destroy
its own chances of success.
It will be interesting now- to watch
developments in other states. It Is
quite probable that the same subter
fuge will be adopted in a number of
them, a flat refusal to endorse the
Rayne-Aldrieh measure, and at the
same time a hearty reaffirmation of
devotion to the excessive protective
principle that has battened trusts up
on the land until the average man
= wonders whether he will soon be able
to get one square meal a day.

WHAT WILL BRYAN DO I
Bryan will soon be on his way home
from his trip to Socth America. He
aas requested that there be no great
’public reception accorded h m in New
York on his return, and his wish in
this matter will be acceded to. Perhaps
:t may be that the Nebraskan did not
wish to have any comparisons-ins i- j
tuted between the reception that would!
| assuredly awaits Roosevelt. He can-j
■
.
cep'lon will be like Teddy himself. A
record breaker and a wonder.
One of the questions ‘hat is even
j
great improvement in the outlook for
party 3uecess th s year and two years
hence, deals wi‘h Bryan’s attitude to
ward the presidential nomination in
1912. Seeing a prospect of Democratic
success ahead, will Bryan once more
endeavor to grasp the nomination
and make a final race for the prize be
: has coveted for «o many years? If he
■ does, does it not destroy the chance
Democracy migh't be said to enjoy un
der other conditions? While s*ill a
strong man before the people, with a
large following throughout the coun
, try, is there the slightest reason to
believe that the Nehraskan is any
stronger than he was twelve years
! ago, or four years ago? Hardiy. The
American people are surfeited
with' Bryan, just as, four years hence,
they may be with Roosevelt.
Bryan has an opportunity to do a
great service to his party by letting it
be dist nctly understood that he is not
an aspirant for the nomination again,
and will not be. That will not pre
vent him from exercising a tremend
' ous influence in the national conven
tion, from almost dictating who the
; candidate shall be, and the conditions
, upon which 'he party will make Its
fight. If he will do this, avoid creating
any new paramount issues, and con
tent himself with seeking to ensure the
nomination of a really strong man,
who has a clean record and stands in
touch with the progressive element.? of
the country, the opportunity may be at
hand to swing sufficient of tbe dissatis
fied Republican vote to him to carry
! the election.
Bryan has been accused of being a ;
self seeking politician. The oportunity
is before him to demonstrate tha‘ be
is something more than this, that he is
a true patriot. The man who permits 1
selfish ambition to defeat the Demo
cratic party in 1912 is devoid of true
patriotic principle. That is one fact
i that cannot be disputed.
WILL BUILD UP IN TWO WAYS.
The good roads now being con
structed will work in two different
! directions—they will build up the pop
ulation of Americus from the country
; and at the same time they will build
up the population of the country dis
' tricts, they will draw to Americus from
' the country and they will send out
1 from Americus to tl.<e country, as well
as draw to the country people from
1 i other sections.
One unquestionable effeqt of the
good roads will be to permit men tc
Hive in the city and easily conduct
farming operations several miles away.
; The good roads and the auto 3 have
made even long distances a matter of
but a few minutes time, now. As a
result, men with children ready for
the higher grades of the public schools
will be tempted to remove their
"j families to tbe city to enjoy the ad
vantages offered here in an educa
* j tional way. Others, too, whose
1 families prefer the city life will, In
c all probability find it convenient :o
f j live in the chy and at the same time
' | conduct their agricultural operations,
‘j On the other band, 'he man in the
* ; city who loves country life now finds
I it advantageous to live in the country
I I and gratify h s desires. Several
Americus families, it will be recalled,
have either moved to the country or
are arranging to do so, having se
cured places on good roads that are
1 within a five or ten minutes’ run in
: an auto. This 'rend of families to the
! country may be expected to Increase
E with the settling up of the country and
1 the extension of the good roads sys
tem.
1 Another effect that the good roads
will have toward increasing the coun
try population is the inevitable trend
toward smaller plantations when land
j values go up. The rapid increase in
values In Smarter incident to the good
roads and other contributing causes
will lead to many smaller farms of
100 to 300 or 400 acres. These smaller
places will be made to blossom like a
garden and will be found highly profit
j able. The good roads will be the direct
j means of bringing in desirable set
tlers to occupy such farming prop
! i erties.
j Still another result of the improved
I highways is seen in the closer rela
tons established between tbe efty and
the country. Automobiles are becom
ing as common in the smaller towns
and the open country, proportionately,
as in the larger cities. In a short time
all of the leading planters of Sumter
county will own automobiles, as well
as the merchants and professional
men outside of the city. Their families
will use them extensively in visiting
the city on business and social pur- j
poses. The ties ihat bind Americus:
to all parts of Sumter county, and as
i well to tbe adjacent counties, will be
j strengthened as a result. Already it
is not uncommon for residents ten
to twenty or more miles away to run
into the city at various times to shop,
to visit friends, to attend the theatre,
j or on Sundays to attend religious serv
ices. This tendency will rapidly in*
crease.
Automobiles, more profitable farm
ing, increasing land values, greater
social pleasures,, better educational
