YIAYXARD DIVORCE SHATTERS
TRIO OF ROMANTIC LOVES
Maynard’s Wedding YVas Only One of
Three.
New York, July IS.—Nine years ago
Frank E. Maynard eloped with Miss
Frances Marie Lines, whiile he was a
junior at Yale, and thereby precipi
tated three romantic marriages. Tae
other two, those of his father and of
his chum, still endure, but his was
ended a few days ago by Justice Bis
choff, who granted an interlocutory
> decree of divorce to Mrs. Maynard
( upon the recommendation of Roger A.
Pryor, the referee.
The Maynards have one child, a
, daughter, but that did not chain young
i' Maynard to his home the last year or
Jso, the evidence showed. Last April
Ihe went to a Y T ale banquet at the Yale
i j Ckib as on many previous occasions
; and failed to go home. This particu
! lar time, however, detectives entered
the room of the hotel where he had
gone after the banqut and there got
’ | ebidence which won the divorce ly, •
j Mrs. Maynard.
j Maynard was a junior at \ r ale in
j 1901. At the junior prom that year
|he met Miss Lines. On June 12 of that
year young. Maynard slipped a wav
from Yale and went with Miss Lines
to Holy Trinity church, where they
were married, despite the oposition of
their parents, by Father Considine. In
less than a month after the beginning
of Maynard’s tempestuous wooing he
had married, and both were under
twenty years of age.
I Maynard’s bride was accompanied
by Miss Nennie Clay Tenney at the
j wedding. To raise the funds for the
marriage young Maynard had gone to
j his churn, Nabie Crouse Klook, of Syra
cuse, many times a millionaire. Kloek
gladly advanced the funds, and at the
wedding he and Miss Tenney met. A
year later they were married,
i But Klock in aiding his chum got a
stepfather as well as a bride. He was
married in October, 1902. Maynard
had been forgiven by his father soon
after his elopement and the senior
Maynard wanted to meet the young
man who had helped his son. He not
only melt Klock, but also met Klock’s
mother, w r ho was a widow. The fol
lowing May they were married, too.

WHILE PARENTS ARE TRIED
BABY LAUGHS IN COURT
Jury Convulsed By Pranks of Little
Child.
New York, July IF. —To six-months
old David Rubin appearance with his
parents in the Court of General Ses
sions meant nothing.
Charles Rubin, twenty-three years
old, and his wife, Rebecca, twenty, the
parents of baby David, were on trial
before Judge Foster and a jury charged
with arson. They are acuused of at
tempting to burn their home, No 82
Jefferson street, to collect S4OO insur
ance.
The presence of Baby Rubin in the
court, was not because the court held
malice, nor was it “stage play.” Judge
Fos.er listened to the mother’s plea
that she be not separated from the
child. There are no nurses for six
months-old infants in the Tombs, so
the court decided to hurry the trial
with Baby David as a participant.
For four long, tedious hours the trial
progressed, and while Assistant Dis
trict Attorney Adams thundered ac
cusations against the father and the
mother, this bundle of cooing babyhood
realized nothing in the scene, save a
new and interesting nursery in which
there were a score or more of strange
and pleasing figures. Before the day’s
proceeding closed it became a difficult
eves from this cooing, happy infant to
matter for the jurymen to divert their
the witnesses in the jury b x.

NOT SAfISFIED WITH
LAND OF CANUCK.
Settlers Are Returning to
Their Homes.
Washington, D. C„ July 19.—The tide
of emigration of home-seekers to Can
ada, which has been a subject of great
concern to ttY? administrators of the
public domain for the past few years,
has turned, in the opinion of officials of
the reclamation service. Thousands
have returned and a great many more
are expected bact soon.
Clarence J. Blanchard, statistician
of the reclamation service, who is in
the field inspecting irrigation pro
jects, reports to the headquarters of
the service here that he has interview
ed a great number of settlers in Mon
tana who had tried the Canadian ex
periment, but were glad enough to re
turn home. They said that practically
every American farmer in the neigh
borhood of Alberta, where the Canad
ian Government maintains an irriga
tion project, was anxious to get back
if he could sell his holdings in the
Dominion.
The American settlers were dissat
isfied with the character of the land,
:he crops from which, they said, con
sisted principally of alfalfa and such
hardy grains as winter wheat. The
form of government did not appeal to
them, and they considered the rail
mad freight rates exorbitant. Tne
climate also was a source of dissatis
faction, ice and snow in August and
September of last year adding to their
discintent.
During the last nine months, it w r as
said a" the reclamation service to-day,
15,000 settlers have returned to the
United States from Canada, and the
prospect for a general backward move
ment was bright.

SUBSTITUTE FOR RADIUM
SUPERIOR TO ORGIINAL
Dr. Stillnum Bailey is Discoverer
of the Substitute.
Pasadena, Ca., July ~\ r /. —The discov
ery of a substitute for radium which
multiplies its uses, eliminates its dan
ger and is comparatively easy to man
ufacture, was announced before the
sixty-sixth annual meeting of the
American Homeopathic Institute by
Dr. E. Stillman Bailey, former dean
of the Hahnemann Medical College, of
Chicago. Dr. Bailey, with Dr. Frank
H. Blaekmarr, also of Chicago, has
been conducting exhaustive researches
for two years.
The new substance is a combination
of theroium and pitch blende product,
which in effect is uranium with its
poinonous properties removed. Rec
ords of cures of suposedly incurable
case of x-ray burns, cancer and other
serious diseases were furnished the
convention from the experiences of
Doctors Bailey, Blaekmarr and other
physicians.
Probably the most important prop
erty of thordax, as explained to the
convention, is its power of allaying
pain.

UNSAIISEACIORY.
Price of Colton Shows an
Upward Tendency.
New York, July 19. —The failure of
the governmem to sustain the indict
ments obtained som3 weeks ago
■ against several prominent cotton mer
, chants created consternation among
: Hie" bears who had been bolding out
i in the hope of relief from this quarter
■ and caused urgent short covering in
the July and August options.
The interests in control of the spot
situation here supplied cotton freely,
tl.jus preventing any abnormal ad
vance. The government has announc
ed its intention to impanel another
grand jury for the purpose of elimin
ating the defects of the previous in
dictments, but the whole matter is
regarded h as more or less of a
fiz: ie and is no; expected to have any
• further effect on tbe market. The
remaining short interest in the old
crop options must now either deliver
the cotton or cover their contracts at
prevailing prices.
Weather conditions for the growing
, (eiLip were a littfe more favorabld
during the week than they load been
for a month past, but were still un
satisfactory.
i ' In Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi,
Eastern Arkansas and Georgia there
has been altogether too much rain
and reports of deterioration are gen
eral from these sections. In North
and South Carolina tbe weather has
been reasonably good for the past ten
days. In Texas and Oklahoma ther
, has not been enough rain to carry
the crop through a prolonged dry sped
but there has been sufficient to keep
it in good stupe up to the present
time.
The trade has already begun to re
vise its estimates of a big yield made
earlier in the season and sentiment is
becoming more bullish. Unless very
favorable conditions prevail through
out the belt during the next few
weeks these estimates must be further
reduced.
At present trade interests are hold
ing off and watching the weather, buy
ing only moderately on reactions. This
attitude is, of course, largely due to
the stagnation in the dry goods ..busi
ness.
More moisture in the Western sec
tion and clear, warm weather with
occasional showers in the Eastern
section are required to assure a good
yield, and unless these conditions are
, soon realized general buying of the
new crop options is expected to de
velop and carry prices higher.
