AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER
RANKS AS TWELFTH IN
SERVICE OF SIATE
Americus Light Infantry is
Among Best.
Company Gains Hun
dred Per Cent in Mer
it in Year,
Americas Light Infantrymen are
elated over the official information re
cently given out to thie effect that
old “Company L” now ranks as twelfta
of all the commands in the state's
service. This is a gain of 100 per
cent, within a year; another fact of
-wrluicU the isoldier boys are proud. #
Following the official inspection a
year ago, the Americus Light Infan
try stood 25th in the long list of
companies, and the gain since made
is most gratifying.
With a full complement of commis
sioned officers and fifty-eight enlisted
men, the Light Infantry takes a proud
stand, indeed.
For this splendid gain and for the
general efficiency of the command
great credit is due ithe pains-taking
and untiring efforts of Captain J. E.
B. McLendon, who has had the hear
ty co-operation of Lieut. Dunn and the
men in the ranks as well.
And to the list of commissioned of
ficers the name of Lieut. Charles p.
Davis was added yesterday on the re
ceipt of his commission.
For many years Dr. Davis has been
an enthusiastic member of the Light
Infantry, and was battalion adjutant
of the Fourth regiment until the se
vere inspection requiring the National
Guard to qualify under the provisions
of the Dick bill necessitated the retir
ing of several companies.
Adjutant Davis then enlisted as s
rivate with the Light Infantry, and
has since lent his best efforts to the
promotion of its interests.
Rccvnly he was elected second Peu
tentnt and has just been commissioned
as such His long experience of years
in service, as well as Ms acquaintance
with the state officers will be of ad
amage to Company L. and the com
■ n! 1 is congratulated thereupon.
Had he company a rifle range the
percentage last year would have been
much higher. To get the benefit of
range practice Lieut. Davis and other
members were at their own personal
expense, to ranges in other cities to
practice at targets.

Las Angeles, Ca., July 20.—Alfalfa,

Her idea, already carried out on a
small scale and suggested by the

IN HOUSE AND SENATE
MANY NEW BILLS.
No Reconsideration of the
Judge’s Bill.
(Spaciai to Times-Recorder.)
Atlanta, Ga., July 20.—1 n the senate
this morning the motion to reconsider
the bill passed yesterday increasing
the salaries of Supreme court justices
was lost, as was the bill authorizing
verdicts at the first term. The bill
authorizing the counties of Fulton,
Chatham and Richmond to pay Supe
rior court judges $2,000 additional ro
their salaries of $3,000 a year, was
passed, and also the Matthews bill
providing protection for municipal
sinking funds. At the fag end of the
session the Price bill barring drinking
of intoxicants on railroad trains was
considered, and just before the close
passed.
In the house the day was taken up
urincipally in a discussion of the reso
lution calling on Governor Brown to
explain why troops were sent by him
to Durham to quell the recent disturb
ances there, and tbe measure finally
adopted. The house also voted to re
consider its action of yesterday in re
gard to the bill appropriating $15,000
for a new heating plant for the Uni
versity at Athens, and the measure
will again be considered tomorrow.

Wt LOSE LAST GAME
TO IHOMASVILLE.
Champs Are Home for the
Game Today.
(Special to Times-Recorder.)
Thomasville, Ga., July 20.—Thomas
cii le a'nd Americas fought it out here
today for eight innings, and the re
sult was a victory for the locals.
Ansley did tbe twirling for Thomas
ville and while he was tapped up for
several hits, the visiting swatsmen
were unable to bunch their bingles
and with able fielding support lie
won his game in a walk.
Robinson did the box for the visitors
and proved a mystery throughout the
playing, errors contributing to botn
tallies secured by the locals.
In the second the run-getting was
started by the visitors, who forced
Vibert across the rubber on a hit and
two errors, and came dangerously
near garnering aniotkier run, but J.
Wheatley was “choked off’ at the plate
in time to save the game.
The locals garnered one in the sec
ond and one in the fifth and as the vis
itors were unable to squeeze another
runner across after the second the
final score stood 2 to 1.. Reggins be
gan a batting rally in tbe second witn
a slashing double to center and Cones,
who followed him, bunted to Vibert
and was safe on his error. Boshea
tapped an easy one to Robinson and
was out at first, but Lee singled over
second and Reggins reached the goal.
Coones tried hard to steal a tally on
the single, but was caught off and
died between the lines. Groover was
next up and went out from Peddy to
Wheatley.
In tbe fifth the winning tally was
garnered by the locals on Vibert’s er
ror, Coones’ single to left and Groo
ver's single, and this ended the run
getting for both sides.
At the end of the eighth the game
was called to allow the Americus team
to catch a train for home.

While Americus did not exactly
“sit by the fire” yesterday, the na

hiked out to where the sunbeams danc

two days past the weather here has
been most unusual in mid-July. Blan
kets were found comfortable in the
early morning, while the stiff fall
breezes blowing knocked the mosquiro
out of the box in the first inning, it
is clearly a misdeal, and Old Sol will
probably rectify matters t day.

Forces of Local Option
Trying to Bring Out
a Candidate.
(Special to Times-Recorder.)
Atlanta, July 20.—A report is cur
rent that an effort is being made to
get a third candidate into the race for
governor. According to this report, it
is a movement on the part of the local
optionists of the state. They do not
consider that they are anywhere rep
resened in either of the candidates
now foremost in the race.
It will be recalled that both Gov.
Brown and former Gov. Smith in
1908 signed statements which were
presented to tbem by the stalwart pro
hibitionists.
The local optionists want a candi
date, and they want a strong one; they
are looking around. Report has it
that they are now working for two
Georgians with the view to getting one
of them into the race.
It is said these gentlemen are Al
bert H. Cox, of Atlanta, lawyer, and
Judge Richard B. Russell, of the
Court of Appeals, who was recently
thinking of running, but never reach
ed a conclusion.
It is a little late to start a new can
didate on the road. Things have been
pretty well lined up. Still there are
some who think there is a chance; they
believe they might use the wedge
which Judge Hart made in the situa
tion before he drew out of it.
Whatever is to be done will de
velop in the next few days, probablv
by the latter part of this week.

French Association Organized For This
Purpose.
Paris, July 20.—“ Ans” is not, as
might be supposed, an abbreviation of
Ananias, but the initials of a new
brand of brothers. They have form
th'e “Association of Noses That Suf
fer.” They are persons with sensi
tive mucous membranes, which are
(grievously affllflated by bad anile]o*.
The purpose of the society is to do
away with the latter.
Among bad smells they include not
only such violent perfumes as that of
a tannery, but also scents which' those
who use them appear to consider
pleasant, such as patchouli, and ail
those into which musk enters. Ev
ery member will be pledged to scent
his handkerchief with nothing more
potent than white rose, new mown
hay, violets and so on, and to in
sist on his womenfolk doing likewise.
The new League of Nice Noses will
protest against the smells of railway
trains, motor cars and of Paris streets
on August days. Whether they will
achieve anything is another question,
but at least they will have protested.
They will invite doctors, poets, phil
osophers and all persons of delicate
tastes to join them.
The Viscount Robert de Montesqiou-
Fezensac, one of whose volumes of
verse is called “Les Chef des Odeurs
souaves,” that is tao say, the chief
tain of sweet scents —a title which
has no clearer meaning in French than
in English, but sounds appropriate in
the present case—Das naturally been
elected an honorary member.

Columbus, Ga., July 20.—The Geor

says today in ios regular issue:
In the new corporations for the
week in Georgia and Alabama, 30 in
number, with capital stock of $2,372,-
990, those that are chartered to deal
in real estate stand prominent.
In the number are several compa
nies formed to handle city and su
burban real estate, and a.hers with
substantial stock plan to deal in farm
lands and colonization tracts in South
Georgia.
As illustrating the manner in which
farming capital in other states is be
ing attracted by the generous returns
yielded by Georgia-Alabama farms, the
sum of $70,000 has been invested in
Sumter county during the past week
in plantations by South Carolina in
vestors.
That section of Georgia seems to
be a favorite field for South Carolina
investment, judging by the fact that
Jeople from that state have spent Hun
dreds of thousands of dollars, for
farm lands in the vicinity of Americus
in recent months.

Com. Hudson Tells Earm*

Union City, Ga., July 20.—“ Accor
ding to present indications, I believe
that the price of cotton will go to 20
cents this falJ," said Commissioner
1 bom as G. Hudson Tuesday whole dis
t ussing conditions. “The present con
ditions and the general situation all
point to a higher price this year. The
crop at best, 1 believe, will only be
halt a crop, and this, with business
conditions will make the price of cot
ton higher. The majority of the farm
ers over the state and throughout the
South are holding their cotton and
this will also help to make cotton
prices higher.”
