AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER
A MILLION CANS FRUIT
“MADE IN AMERICUS.”
Frainload of Tinned Goods
Made Here.
Three Busy Plants Op
erated Here During
the Season of Canning
Just Ended.
The canning season here end.
ed yesterday with the closing down of
thie large plant of the Americus Can
ning Co., of which Roberts Bros., o*
Baltimore, are proprietors. The plant
ran on lull time during the season of
six weeks, doing an enormous busi
ness.
More than one million cans peaches
were put up here during the season at
the Roberts plant and the smaller ones
of the Ware-Progres sand the Ray
mond Orchards Co., near Americus.
These one million cans of 3-lb
weight added eighty carloads peaches
to the 230 cars shipped otherwise to
the East and North.
Some idea of the magniture of the
peach canning industry in Americus
is thus given, when it is understood
hat it would require four long freight
trains to carry at one shipment the en
tire output of the canneries here. The
Ware-Progress Co. alone shipped a\%ay
a trainload.
Tide plant of the Americus Canning
Co., under the management of the
Messrs. Langrell, of Baltimore, had a
most successful run.
The Messrs. Langrell started then
plant in operation the first of June
and for six weeks have worked un
ceasingly. Fruit was most abundant
at all times and the plant was oper
ated on full time.
This plant alone put up more than
750,000 cans of 3-lb. weight- a total of
3,250,000 pounds canned peaches, or
about sixty car loads. Their output
includes an excellent quality of pie
peaches, as well as the superior and
nore expensive brands of table fruit.
The season’s business just ended
is the largest the company has eyer
laad here. During the six weeks of
■usl.l work they employed a large force
if operatives here, including hundreds
if colored people. Their expense ac
count, including cost of cans anJ
crates, exceeded one thousand dollars
per day.
The 750,000 cans peaches put up by
them bear the label “Made in Ameri
cus, Ga.,” and are shipped to every
state in the union.

Americus fans fingered a few extra

was the faith of the Phillistines in

ROBINSON TO PITCH IN
FIRST OF THE SERIES.
Will Twirl the Sphere in
Game Monday.
Americus fans will welcome for the
first time here the much touted Thom
asville slabmen who come tomorrow
for a series of three games, Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday, playing a
return engagement with the Americas
Champs, who were there for three
games the past week.
And they are anything than a
bunch of backlot boys as their excel
lent playing in numerous games has
demonstrated.
Among the star fan wudders With
the Thom, boys is C. C. Ansley, once
the idol of the Champs camp here and
who will throw the ball at his oij al
lies.
Oid "C. C.’’ is still the goods, and in
a recent game put the blue tag on the
Americus hunch.
Pitcher Robinson, who has few
equa is in amateur society in the
Sout.i| when it comes to box work
and all ’round playing, will twirl ths
ball in the opening game tomorrow for
Americus, and if properly supported
will more than likely string it with
our victories.
in addition to his pitching abilities
Robinson ranks A-l at the bat, and is
wholly dependable in any place on
the field.
Three good games with Thomasville
are assured, and when these are com
pleted Wednesday the Champs will
prepare for the pilgrimage to Albany
next day to tackle their friends, the
enemy, in two games, Thursday and
Friday.
And these will be rattlers, or rather
such is the anticipation now. The
team has recently been strengthened
by the addition of Cooper and Donal
son, of the Quitman aggregation while
Albany’s bunch took three from the
Quitman team when it disbanded re
recent! v.
Eight .more games of the series of
twelve arranged with Albany remain
to be played.
Os the four games played to date
the score stands tied, each team win
ning a game and tying up two. Os
forty-nine games played to date Amer
icus has won forty and “tied” in sev

Barcelona, July 23.—Antonio Maura,
former Spanish premier, was wound

His assailant was arrested. Ilis name
is Manuel Posa, and be is a native
of Barcelona. Posa fired three times
as Sen-or Maura was leaving a train,
wounding him in the leg.
The ex-premier was hurried on
board tl.«e steamer Miramar, where a
doctor dressed his wounds, which are
said to be very slight.
He left immediately on board the
steamer for the island of Majorca.
Posa gained knowledge of the faci
that Maura was to pass through Bar

was going to spend the summer with
his family.
Owing to the excitement in radical
circles extra police precautions were
taken to guard Senor Maura and it has

ALBANY MAN LOST SUITCASE
IN AMERICUS POKER GAME
‘‘Affection” That Exists Between the
Two Towns.
V
That Americus and Albany love
each other with an intensity that pass
eth understanding, even as the bull
dog in one yard cherishes affection
for tls3 tomcat over the fence, is
fully expressed in bhe following good
story appearing in the Maccn Tele
graph yesterday from its Albany cor
respondent.
He might have added, try way of ex
planation, that the suit case referred
to was retained here on a royal flush.
Here is his story:
The rivalry between Americas and
Albany is intense. These two towns
love each other like one tenor loves
another who can sing higher than ne
can. The rivalry is manifest in many
ways, some of them, perhaps, peculiar
to Americas and Albany.
“Tliey are rivals in baseball, in
good roads, in growth of population
and even in tne skill of their poker
I 'ayers. It is said to he a:i actual
fact that two Albanians who are rec
ognized as liig'i.y, not to say danger
ously proficient : n the gentle at", of
[•(•*•'•■r. went i; *o Americus once up-j
n a time to clean up Americas.
“One of them had recently been!
there and had found such easy marks!
and so much coin of the realm per
capita that he took a suit case along
to bring back his winnings.
“But Americus had only been giving!
an imitation of the eafiy thing. When'
the Albanians returned home they hhd ;
lost even theU' suit case.

Clark's Maxwell and George H. Bur

people were waiting when the Buiek

drew up here. The road from the
Sumter county line here is good, but
from here on to the county seat it is
rough in places, sandy in others and
in some places it is both. More than
that, it is crooked. Lee is a coun
ty with fertile land, but it is thinly
settled in this section. What people
here are, however, wan better roads,
and have insisted strongly that they
shall be improved, particularly the
road from Smithville to Leesburg.
