A NEGLECTED EDUCATION.
i William Wallace Whitelock, in Life.)
When Xed, the eldest son. came on,
To Art he turned hid mind,
j So went abroad to Barbizon,
Arc's “atmosphere" to find.
Five years in Paris he remained,
i T..o' pa soometimes protested—
But, then, as he to pa explained,
| 'Twas money well invested.
! Sam was the in order, he
j On Lit’rature decided
So itudied for his Ph.D.,
I To start out well provided.
| Then traveled for a year or two
* Thro’ ail of Europe's quarters—•
j As Sam e-xplained to pa anew.
'Twas bread uskiii, the waters.
, Alonzo followed Sam. but turned
His ear to Music's voice,
He felt that genius iu him burned,
He was Apollo's choice.
! So, like his brothere. forth he fared
! His soul in travel steeping—
! Assuring pa when he got scared,
; ’Twas seel for future reaping.
Xow, last of all came lirtle Jim,
A simple lad and plain;
Xo god had set his seal on him,
His was no mighty brain.
Pa's money, too, bad ail been spent—
Twigs grow as fortune bends them.
The others haven't got a cent —
Except wh?t Jimmy senls them.
TEDDY AS “MB FADING BOTH
WAYS.”
1 Wit'.j a versatility that has no ex
ample in the politics of this counfry,
the iion hunter who a little while ago
I spoke for Senator Beveridge in Indi
ana has also spoken for Senator Lodge
* in Massachusetts, On the supreme is
sue before the country the position of
tbe two Senators is irreconcilable. In
| the extra session of this Congress Sen
ator Beveridge stood with hia Insurg
ent associates fighting Senators Al
drich, Lodge an dHale, of the Commit
tee on Finance, inch by inch on the
tariff bill. The Republicans of Indiana
Lave denounced the bill as a violation
of party pledges, and have indorsed
the course of Senator Beveridge. Sen
ator Lodge is one of the foremost de
* fenders of the bill in an elaborate re
port in which he has undertaken to
prove that, the tariff has nothing to do
with t’-'e rise in cost of commodities.
All this Is nothing to Colonel Roose
* velt. The two Senators, widely differ
ing on the only political question now
pressing for solution, are hie personal
friends, as he says, and may 'be useful
to hi 3 ambition. That outweighs all
consideration of the interests of 90 -
000,000 people in thia issue. The per
sonal end Is what made it easy for
him to pose as a progressive on the
tariff in the West and go home to in
dorse the tariff in his Saratoga plat
form. It is true that he has repudiat
ed this part of his platform; but Sen
ator Lodge, whom he supports, repre
| sents all that is reactionary on the
' question before the people. It also
true that he has two links by which
he proposes to connect the hostile ele
ments of the Republican party. One
is the maxium and minimum device,
wLich gives nobody else any concern,
and the other is a scientific Tariff
Commission which is going to aijjust
duties for Congress in accordance with
difference in cost of production at
home and abroad. In the meantime,
as the Philadelphia Record points out,
“the masses of the American people,
| to w'hom is offered this illusory Jar
| gon, are to remain indefinitely the
victims of a remorseless system that
is robbing them, by manifold insidious
processes, of their wages and savings.
"in the Immortal Pilgrim's Progress
is a Mr. Facingbothways, of whom Col
onel Roosevelt is the latest and most
conspicuous type. The man who is
capable of encouraging Insurgent op
position to t.Je Payne-iALdrich act in
) the \\ est anq of aiding its supporters
> in the East might have stood for the
character delineated by Bunlan. His
gyrations on this issue before the
country might be regarded a s the
merest charlatanry were they not made
a little more respectable by the per
sonal ambition that inspires the per
formances.”
WHAT FATHER MOST FEARED
WAS NOT A LION
A little Lee street girl is inclined io
be cowardly, and recently was chided
by her indulgent father on account of
her foolish fears.
she ventured at the close of
the lecture, "when you see a oow,
aren't you afraid?"
“Why certainly not, !d<ear. Why
should I be?"
"Well, w .ien you see a dog. aren't
you afraid then?”
"So, indeed!" with marked emphasis
on the "no.”
"Aren’t you afraid when it thunders,
papa?”
“Why, no,” and he laughed at the
thought and added, “Oh, you silly
child! ”
“P pa," and she came closer and
looked into her parent’s eyes, “aren't j
you afraid of nothing in the world but
just mama ”

ARE GETTING FIGURES
ABOUT EACH OTHER.
Uncle Sam to Stop Leak in
Tax Figures.
Washington, D. C.. Xov. I.—Big
manufacturers in various parts of the
United States who have been getting
information on the incomes of rival
corporations, as a result of a leak in
the corporation tax collection system.]
will hereafter find the ltd clamped
tight v down.
Lawyers in certain parte of the
country have been writing to officials
in Washington asking for information
regarding the income of concerns with
■ which they Dave no personal connec
tion. Tiie thecry is that they were
acting for rival corporations desiring
inside information.
Attorney General Wiekersham had a
long conference with President Taft
yesterday, and. as a result, regulations
will be drafted to govern the giving
out of information regarding the col
lection of the corporation tax.
T..e chief objection to the passage of
the corporation tax in Congress wa3
based on the ground that the filing of
figures showing the income >would give
one corporation indue advantage over
others. It was said the President
wanted a corporation tax as a wedge
for controlling stock manipulation by
corporations as much as for the money
that would be added to the govern
ments's revenue.
The collection of the tax has been
more successful than was expected.
Moreover, considerable surprise his
been caused by the apparent willing
ness of corporations to comply with
the law >without delay. It is said the
corporations take the position that
they might as well pay the tax with
out delay, so that the attack on the tax
in the Supreme Court may not be prej
udiced by any show of obstancy. Most
of the big corporations believe that
when the corporation tax case is de
cided the law it wild 'be declared un
constitutional anl they will get their
money back.
In the meantime, according to the in
formation obtained yesterday, some of
. the corporations, through their law
, yers, have been trying to steal a march
, on their competitors by ascertaining
. the amount of money collected, from
• them under the new law.

Mrs. Reed, Jr., has married her first

Topeka, and I did not see him often
until his father’s death."
She is tbs mother of a son eighteen
, years of age. Judge Reed died August

his widow married the son.

Arrival of Sixth Child.
Waukegan, 111., November I—“Suf

baby girl who arrived at the home of
Frederick Crombie, a pressman. "Suf
ficient” is the sixth child and fourth
daughter inside of six years, and her
aatne wa s bestowed by the father when
the news of the arrival of the stork
was broken to him.
“I am not referring to the old law,
Sufficient to the day is the evil there

well, sufficient—and that is why we

received from Xew York a boa-eon
| strictor eleven feet long to be used as
a pet. Mrs. Packard, who professes
to have a gift over reptiles, has from
childhood had a fondness for serpents,
and when she failed to rally from a
recent surgical operation satisfactorily
she became convinced she would im
prove if she could get a snake as a
pet.
A copperhead was obtained three
weeks ago and her hea’th immediately
was benefited. The snake became
chilled, however, and died, since which
, time Mrs. Packard has not been so
well. Her husband objected strenuous
ly to the coming of the first serpent,
but believing it tvas a case of life or
; death with his wife he consented to
; the order for another.
Mrs. Packard, when seen, declared
she noticed great improvement in her
haltb already. She had the snake in a
tub of warm water as colid weather
was feared. She epxects to keep the
snake, and will probably get another
as this one is not so large as she ex
pected. She says that tier gift has
been noticeable since she was a baby,
when the snakes crawled to her from
all directions whenever she was in
; their vicinity at Sunday school picnics

Atlanta, Ga., November I.—Being

last night.
Barnes had just opened a new bak
