WOMAN VAIN? YES,
BUT MAN’S AS VAIN
Someone has said that woman is the j
vainest of all creatures. True, woman
has a fondness for the artificial, for'
she is always looking for some late in- ,
vention that will improve her appear- j
a nee. But she hasn’t a thing on mere
man when it comes to making up.
If you have any doubt as to such a
statement you should start a school of
physical culture. If you can't launch
such a scheme, secure a position as
physical instructor at some athletic
club and you will soon be convinced.
Perhaps no man has a better idea of
the vanity of man than the physical
director of an athletic club. He has
mere secrets unfolded to him than
Laura Jean Libbey.
It is really amusing. One fellow is
hollow chested and seeks to remedy
that fault which so mars his manly
figure. 'Another fellow is getting so
thin his clothes just hang on him. He
wants to gain about 30 pounds. He
there is the portly individual who is
developing a double chin that is simply
distressing. He must lose about 30
pounds or it will be absolutely neces
sary for him to get a new dress suit.
The gymnasium at various times
during the day presents a very inter
esting sight. On the wrestling board
may be a half dozen of the portly per
sons going through all kinds of Salome
“movements,"’ every one of which has
a meaning of its own.” They are all
trying to reduce their waist lines.
On the running track may be three
jor four men doing a marathon. Others
I will be doing other strenuous things,
jlf the average woman had to go
j through the stunts man does to pre
| serve her figure most of them would
| say “nothing doing.”
Man is more impatient than woman.
|He wants to get results at once. He
frets when after two weeks of hard
! work he has lost only four pounds. He
j wants immediate results, and often he

IN SALE OF MULES
Americus Market Has Handled
Hundreds
This has been the banner year for
the sale of mules in the Americus
territory, as probably a larger num
| ber of the St. Louis songbirds have
been sold her? than ever before. (Sev
eral farmers removing here have
brought large numbers of them, as
have others in Sumter and adjoining
counties.
Local dealers actually have experi
enced difficulty in keeping mules on
: hand, there being such a demand for
I them, notwithstanding the exceeding
high prices.
The ideal weather since the begin
ning of the year has enabled the farm
ers to put their land in splendid condi
tion, there not being a great many
days that the ground wa.s too wet for
plowing.
However, the recent rains have
placed the ground in first-class work
ing condition and the farmers of
Sumter are especially optimistic ove>
the prospect for the present crop, the
conditions being more favorable than
they have been at this time of the
year in the last decade.
The oat crop has come out wonder
fully and a good yield is now prom
ised, indeed, is almost assured. The
cotton is up in splendid stands and
the corn has been worked out.
Lice kill your profits quickly and
surely. Don't tolerate the pest in your
chicken yard. Get Conkey’s Lice
Powder 25c. You can have a trial
package and a valuable poultry book,
no charge, by calling at Eldridge
Drug Co.

When a medicine must be given to
young children it should be pleasant
to take. Chamberlain’ Cough Remedy
is made front loaf sugar and the
roots used'in its preparation give it
a flavor similar to maple syrup, mak
ing it pleasant to take. It has no
superior for colds, croup and whoop
ing cough. For sale by all dealers.
A silly woman may manage a man
of sense, but no sensible man has ever
succeeded in managing a silly woman.
A gi’-l can smile at you just because
she doesn’t mean it.
| gives up in disgust at his failure to get
them, and declares he will content
himself with being a fat man, even 'f
' nobody does love him.
In these modern days there are all
kinds of methods used to reduce and
put on weight. All physical instruc
tors use what is called a stomach
bandage or blanket on the fat boys
who seek to take off weight. This
bandage is usually about ten feet 100.7
and a foot wide. It is wrapped about
the waist of the unfortunate portly
man, and over it a jersey and sweater
are usually worn. The blanket and
sweaters are used of course to cause
an increase of perspiration, for each
little drop of perspiration that exudes
from the pores and is swallowed up by
the wollen blanket means the loss of
just that much weight.
The very latest, however, is a rubber
shirt. It is made of fine Para rubber,
and is worn over a light woolen shirt,
while over the rubber shirt is a jersey
or sweater. The rubber shirt makes it
much easier for a fat person to do the
required amount of exercising, as ten
feet of woolen blanket makes a rather
I bulky package to wrap around an al
-1 together too bulky stomach.
| They say women are jealous of their
sex. No doubt they are, but men are
even more so. This fellow would be
satisfied if he weighed as much as I.
, So-and-So. who is probably 30 pounds
lighter than he, while Mr. ;So-and-So
(would be satisfied for life if he could
. just add 30 pounds.
! I One member of the athletic club
looks very much like a possible “white
) man’s hope.” He is a big husky fel
. lew, weighing in the neighborhood of
[ 200 pounds, is a very fair boxer and
can hit like the hick of a mule. Very
unfortunately said member is very
> hanrsome.

Q. 0.0. SPRING TONIC
Spring is the season when the blood is weakest, and our systems 1
responsive to the demands of nature. It is the time of fickle appetites'
digestion, lack of energj', bodily fatigue, and many other systemic
