BELL COMPANY HAS FINISHED
NEW SYSTEM IN AMERICUS
Company’s Lines all Encased in Cables
Now Thus Improving Local Service
-Work of Five Months Now Finish
ed Throughout.
The Americus system of the Bell
Telephone Co. has just been rendered
wellnigh complete through five
months of assidious work and expen
diture of large sums, to the end if af
fording Americus patrons and the gen
eral public the best service since the
system was established here nearly 30
years ago.
From thirty phones used by (Ameri
cus then, the number has since gone
above the thousand mark.
And with rapidly increasing busi
ness it has ever been the desire of
the Bell Company to render its pa
trons the best service that new equip
ment and efficient help could afford.
Five months ago the Bell Company
decided to enclose all of its service
wires in leaden cables, thus assuring
a perfected service. This estimate has
just been completed and upon prac
tically every street in Americus the
wires have thus been disposed of and
the service improved.
A small working army has thus been
busily engaged here since last De
cember, but the vastly improved ser
vice justified the cost.
The encased wire eliminates all
trouble in telephone communication,
and insures protection against injury
from storms or other cause. The tail
poles are also eliminated, and the
shorter pole, half the height of the
old ones, presents a better appearance
in the streets, and are safer besides.
This stupendous task was fully com
pleted yesterday, and the Bell Com
pany thus assures to its Americus pa
trons a more efficient and satisfactory
local service.
(Many miles of heavy and durable
cable has thus been put in in Amer
icus thus spring.
Telephone development in this sec
tion of South Georgia is rapidly being
extended, the sole aim of the company
bding to afford the very best service,
regardless of the cost entailed. The |
extension of phone lines to farm J
houses throughout the several coun- j
ties here is also an important work.
Once in a home, a telephone is ,
never allowed removed by the sub-|
scribed, who fully appreciates its!
value.
Manager Tullis and his efficient
corps of operators and assistants are !
giving Americus an excellent service,
and this, even, will be more satisfac-;
tory under the improved conditions.

I JUDGE SPEER IN MICON
r
Tells Judge He is Broke and
Friendless
George C. Hall, foflnerly a contrac
tor here, is in trouble in Macon, and
on yesterday appeared before Judge
Speer in the United -States court there
and had counsel appointed to defend
him. He stated that he was unable -o
employ an attorney himself, having
recently been through a process of
bankruptcy. The court appointed At
torneys E. P. Mallary, Frank and Hugn
C'.iamb.MT. and J. Walter DeFore to
represent Mr. Hall.
Hall has three indictments pending
against him in the United States
court, all of them growing out of the
recent bankruptcy proceedings, when
it is alleged he concealed part of hts
assets from the creditors. He is now
charged with perjury, making a false
statement in his schedule and conceal
ing assets.
Tie told the court yesterday that he
is penniless, his entire business being
in the bankrupt courts and that he
is in ill health. IHe also claims h s
former friends have all deserted him.

IjOS Angeles, Cal:, May 5. —The first |
public court action In the cases of :
John J. McNamara and James B. Me-|
Namara, charged with dynamiting the
Times building, was scheduled for to
day.
| That action was their arraignment,
; which afforded them their first op
portunity to leave the jail since their
i arrival here. Two days at least are
allowed after the arraignment for the
entering of pleas so the latter action
could not be taken until Monday,
j Twenty-one new indictments, ac
! cording to reliable authority, were
voted late yesterday by the grand
jury against the alleged dynamite con- J
1 spirators, James B. and John J. Mc-
Namara, and Ortie E. MoMan-igal.
Nineteen of the indictments, it is
' understood, are against the iMc..a
maras alone, and charge them -with
: murder in connection with the blowing
- up of the Los Angeles Times newspa
! per plant, and the consequent deaths
!of 21 men. The other two are said i o
be against McManigal, as principal,
! and the McNamara brothers as accom-
I plices in the Llewellyn Iron Works
explosion, in which no one was kill
ed.
McManigal was the principal wit
ness heard by the grand jury. He
was examined for more than two
hours. Immediately afterward the
grand jury adjourned.
The grand jury heard several wit
nesses besides McManigal. Among j
| them were employes and officials of
.the Llewellyn Iron Works and Paul'
| Stnperich, proprietor of a hotel at
j Sausallto, Cal., where the alleged dy

Did You Ever Stop
to Reason it Out?
How many friends of yours wear i
ready-to-wear clothes made by Stein- <

of them do. DO YOU?
You ought to. lYou cannot give a single
valid reason why you ought not to, as far as
fit, as style, workmanship and above all, val

your clothes problem. Stop to reason it out |

AMERICANS IN
I GRAVE DANGER
Ambassador Isks That War-
I ships Be Sent to Coast
Washington, May s.—lncreasing
I anxiety aproaching alarm is felt by
administration officials for the safety
of Americans in Mexico, especially in
the vicinity of Acapulco, on the west
coast. Conditions described as intol
erable were imported to the state de
partment today by Ambassador Wil
son, and it is probable that naval
forces will be ordered to Acapulco at
once.
Mr. Wilson said the Mexican war
department had sent urgent tele
grams of instructions to the com
manding officer at Acapulco to afford
all possible aid to Americans.
Reported danger to Americans was
investigated by Mr. Wilson when it j
was reported that two son 3 of Judge
Melvin Goodman had been murdered j
by alleged revolutionary bandits at
their father's hacienda, Buena Suseso,
not far from Acapulco. The neigh
borhood of the reported crime is sail
to be overrun by bandits who owed
i o allegiance to any responsible or
ganization.
Mr. Wilson states also that Ameri
cans In Mexico City are becoming
alarmed, and that their unrest is due
in some measure to apprehension ol
the failure of peace negotiations and
a consequent prevalence of anarchy
in the Capital.
.That the withdrawal of the Ameri
can naval vessels sent to visit the
Mexican coast cities was a mistake
is now privately admitted in official
i circles. They were originally sent
southward on the usual practice
cruises and if it should become nec
essary to dispatch them again ro
Mexican waters there could be no
concealment of the real purpose of
j their movements.
A reference of the state department
the “intolerable conditions” exist
ing at Acapulco is taken in some quar
ters as a sign of the intention of the
government to dispatch cruisers to
that port and to Mazatlan as well.
There are a number of warships at
-San Diego, -but the distance from
that port to Acapulco and Mazatlan
is about a thousand miles and the
voyage would consume four or five
days at least. The state department
may await the outcome of the pea’.o
negotiations at Juarez before order
ing ships south.
HOUSE STILL HIMMERS
ON FREE LIST BILL
Underwood Would Force Vote
On the Measure
Washington, May s.—The house
was still hammering away today at
the farmers free list bill, while the
senate ostensibly was idle. As a mat
ter of fact, however, the senators
were unusually busy. Many of the re
cently organized committees were at
work and attempts were being made
jto get the senate machinery adjust
led. The wheels of the upper legisla
tive body have not been running so
! smoothly this session, and the friction
I does not give great promise of dimin
ishing in the near future. A repre
sentative caucus to select a president
pro tempore of the senate to replace
Senator Frye, who has given up the
position because of ill health, is ex
pected on Monday, the day the senate
t is next scheduled to meet.
